61 | Hindered Prayer / wall of sin | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 123248
It sounds to me as if both of you are fairly mature and you probably know the scriptures fairly well. I would suggest both of you going to a large christian bookstore and both of you pick out books on your favorite subject. In this case, I would assume both of you would pick out books on prayer but the key here is for both of you to spend some time together and read the books, one chapter at a time. I would suggest your taking turns reading aloud, one to the other and then discuss what you like best about that chapter. Eventually, you will discover the scripture you're looking for but more importantly you'll re-discover how important prayer is to a Godly couple such as yourselves. I say this because when my wife and I went through Marriage Encounter, it was one of the best things we ever did for our marriage and this technique was taught there. I sincerely hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

62 | Scriptural Support? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 126110
The whole book of Hebrews goes into this subject quite a bit. Its main purpose is to contrast the superiority of the christianity over that of the Law of Moses and Judiasm. One of the Book's main tenents is that you and I are NOW able to approach God directly through Jesus, His Son whereas before in Judiasm, the Jews had to go through their High Priest and he didn't know very much and couldn't answer most of their questions. Now God deals directly with His children like I stated and we can pray directly to Him in the name of Jesus Christ. Now, you and I know we're not going to find the specific words as you mention above. God expects us to study His Word and figure SOME things on our own. But clearly through His Word, we can also see that in today's world there is no one performing miracles anywhere even close to the kind of miracles in the Bible. Hope this helps to clarify and God bless. Rowdy |

63 | Order of occurance | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 128036
I've been watching the growth of this thread and have been reading the posts with interest but I noticed there seems to be a couple of items missing. I realize I'm not going to be in agreement with a few of you but I would like to throw in my two cents' worth. I only want to put as much emphasis on this point as the Lord has done in His Word. In my mind, baptism is every bit as important a step in this Process of Salvation as any other. We see many examples of God's Gift of Salvation given to several different people throughout the NT but the best examples are in Acts, one of them being at the establishment of the church in Acts 2. First we see the "convicting the sinner" upon their hearing the Gospel Message, that Christ is the Son of God and that He died for our sins, being the Perfect Sacrifice and Ransom for our souls. Next we see their faith and repentance after they ask Peter what should they do. The next step also seems to be missing since we want to be thorough and "cover all the bases." That is confessing that Jesus is indeed the Son of God like Peter did in Matt 16:16 and Paul describes in Rom 10:9. Next in Acts 2:38, we see how important it is to be baptized for the remission of our sins. I would compare this act to that of Naaman in the story of his healing from leporsy, 2 Kings, Chapter 5. We see that Naaman didn't get what he was looking for until AFTER he dipped himself in the River Jordan a full seven times. Of course it didn't sense and he said as much. He had much cleaner rivers in his own country. And what about the business of being dipped seven times? What possible logic could be in such a silly requirement? Where's the power and majesty of God Almighty in that? Don't you see, that's God's point!! He showed off His power and majesty with the creation of this universe. Now, He wants us to show off our humility and total submission to His Will, His Terms and Conditions of His Son's Last Will and Testament. Now Regeneration is a different matter. That would come AFTER generation which is done by God. According to Titus 3, "washing, renewing and regeneration" is a process that God performs on us as His children. We see this process a little clearer in 1 Jn 1. You see we can't have any part in this process, this is all God's doing. That's NOT to say that we don't have our part...we do as cited in Phil 2:12. We must "work out our salvation with fear and trembling." What work must we perform? We must imitate Paul and all the other fine examplels we see in the NT as cited in 1 Cor 11:1. We shouldn't look at this as if we could earn our way to Heaven for Paul says Rom 8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors--not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. I do hope all of this is clear, but as always, I'm interested in your response. God bless. Rowdy |

66 | should i be part of a ministry? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 133193
I would respond with scripture 1 Tim 6:17 Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. 18 Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed. This is some of the positive motivation and now for the other side, the Lord does give us some negative to motivate us from: James 4:17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin. Christ Jesus puts it like this Luke 9:23 And He was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. 27 "Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. I don't think God could have been any more clear. We can call this working for the Master, working in His vineyard, doing good deeds, call it almost anything you like. All I know is it's NOT an option and this guidance applies to everyone who really wants to go to Heaven. I prefer to call what I'm doing for the Lord my ministry of service to Him. I'll be the first to admit we're all tempted to take a vacation now and again. We're even tempted to think at some point, we've earned a retirement but then I look again at the examples from God's Word, especially His Son, our Lord and King and then I feel ashamed. I hope this helps in your resolve to be obedient. God bless. Rowdy |

67 | Is Bush a Willful Violator of Rom 13? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 133211
Copied for reference: Rom 13:1 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. 3 For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; 4 for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. 5 Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience' sake. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. I would have to say this rather serious question warrants a careful evaluation. After doing such careful thinking, I can't agree with the "modern interpretation" from Mr. Ehud, if indeed that is true. Remember the then modern writers of the KJV (16th century) misinterpreted the word baptizo for King James to allow his abuse of its original meaning. With respect to Rom 13, it should be said that our President is NOT under the subjection of the UN as we DON'T pay taxes to this organization. We contribute to its on-going operation and maintenance but if we decide to stop that contribution, they do NOT have the authority to require it of us. That's what the Declaration of Independence was all about, remember? Yes, my friend I agree that President Bush has made mistakes, maybe even some major flubs and sometimes he does sound like a cowboy but that's probably because he is one...from Texas, no less. So I find myself in support of him as he is far more a Godly man than his immediate predessesor whom I won't even name. I served in the military under him and lost ALL respect for him. Sorry, but I just had to throw in my two cents' worth. God bless all who love our country and will assist in turning her around back again to true devotion to being a Godly nation. Rowdy |

68 | How do I help a 'know all' adolescent? | Bible general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 112429
I can only share with you what my wife and I did with our son with the same kind of attitude. BUT the big difference there was his age and our united stand as husband and wife, father and mother. This works best under these kind of circumstances. I talked to some folks at the church and they referred to the local sheriff who fixed me up with a visit to a nearby prison. We took our son to that prison and "treated" him to a rather UN-pleasant conversation with a couple of reformed prisoners. These men do a wonderful service to the local community, "scaring the devil" out of kids who have too much attitude and put the fear of God back in them. They talk very rough to them, telling them what kind of life they're headed for in prison, if they keep on disrespecting the authority figures in their life. If this sounds a little too scary for you or for those over your cousin, there are alternatives. You might be able to find a old video using the same kind of basic technique, filmed in a prison setting with several teenagers. I think the video is entitled "Scared Straight." I saw it and got the idea above from that. I know these ideas sound a little drastic but believe me, my son and I almost were ready to go to court. If it hadn't been for my wife to intervene, I don't know what would have happened...I shudder to think. Anyway, a parent or a person in such a role has to adopt "tough love" approaches to rearing kids nowadays. I know she may be chronologically 19 years old but sometimes it's hard to believe. As a last note, I gotta say I agree with Hank when he says this Forum is NOT the ideal place to get good, complete advice for personal struggles. I do hope God blesses you in your struggle to be a role model. And do a lot of praying. |

69 | Is astrology forbidden? | Bible general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 112450
I can only come up with the following scriptures which seem to imply God is not pleased when we pursue this area for guidance. Luke 21:25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." 1 Cor 1:21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 2 Thes 2:8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. 9The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. I don't think you'll find the specific words astrology, horoscopes or the zodiac in the Bible but it seems pretty clear to me from the scriptures and I noticed the previous posts on this subject. My solid conclusion is that God wants us to come to one single place for guidance in the metaphysical world of any kind. You know what single source I'm referring to...God's Word. We all know about the Apostles instructions in general to do things in the name of the Lord and if we can't have complete faith in any one thing we do, we should avoid it. There's no way anyone could convince me (or any other serious Bible student, in my opinion) that we follow any other source of guidance in a metaphysical sense. I'm hoping, from studying your other Bible based posts to this Forum, that you're not saying you put any belief or any serious study into these questionable areas, please confirm for me that you don't. Don't get me wrong; I'm not a fanatic about this. For example I know my zodiac sign as being Taurus the Bull but that's the extent of my knowledge of the zodiac. I might even be just a little stubborn as suggested by the personality of the bull but I don't do anything else along these lines. God bless. |

70 | book of barabus | Bible general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 118079
On a topic of this importance I thought it might be useful to cite the fact that this canonization process was very well thought out and done with tremendous care. The "Canon Fathers" felt a great amount of respect for God's Word and were very careful in deciding which writings to include in the NT. In addition to these documents on the internet, there's much more discussion on this Forum. Just punch in canon in the Quick Search and you'll see. From: www.gospelcom.net/rbc/questions/answer.php?catagory What were the standards that earned a document the right to be included in the Bible? ------------------------------------------------------------------ To gain canonical recognition, a book was expected to pass two basic tests. First, it had to have a history of ?continuous and widespread approval amongst Christians? (J. W. Wenham, Christ And The Bible). Second, it was expected to demonstrate that it had either been written by an apostle or specifically approved by the apostles. The fact that the Muratorian Canon (approximately AD 170) listed all of the books presently in the New Testament except for Hebrews, James, and the two epistles of Peter, is another demonstration of the early, broad-based support for the Canon. Another example (and many others could be given) is provided by the brilliant theologian Irenaeus who also wrote in the second century. He quoted the four Gospels extensively and included quotations from all of the New Testament books except Philemon and 3 John. Actually, the fact that a few books were received officially by the church at a later date is more a demonstration of the church?s discretion and caution than it is an indication that these books are in some way unreliable. A well-known theologian once said that the church no more created the New Testament Canon than Newton created the basic principles of physics. The earliest writings of the church fathers demonstrate their confidence in the authority of the New Testament Scriptures. God bless. --Rowdy |

73 | Major and Minor Prophets difference | OT general | Rowdy | 119788
It's just merely another modern convenience for us men of God, students of the Bible. The first 5 books of the OT being about History, then the books on Wisdom, the Major Prophets and the Minor Prophets. You probably already know about a similar division of the NT. What you might not know is the invention of chapters (dividing the books of the Bible) wasn't done until the Middle Ages and then the division of those chapters into verses a couple hundred years after that. I forget which chapter in the KJV version of Acts ends with a comma but it's there. (I think it's somewhere close to Chapter 8). All of these designations just make Bible study a little more easy for those of us that like to refer to topics in nice, neat packages. Can you imagine referring to scripture without these divisions? In an attempt to answer your question directly, the main difference was the length and breadth of subject matter in the different books. The Major Prophets apparently made a more significant impact on the Jewish mindset and the world than the Minor Prophets, i.e. Elijah's contest with false prophets. The most recurring themes throughout the Minor was the abuses of the priests and rulers of the Isrealite nation and going back to God in simple devotion to His laws. God bless. --Rowdy |

75 | life purpose? | OT general | Rowdy | 121637
I can think no better human example than Joseph from Genesis. For at a young age, he saw God had great plans for him, and in spite of all the trials and tribulations that came his way, he never lost his faith in God. I've copied a small portion below just to show how truly he was a man of God but you really must read the whole story yourself to get the full perspective. Especially powerful was his avoiding sin with Potipher's wife when she tempted Joseph. Gen 50:18 Then his brothers also came and fell down before him and said, "Behold, we are your servants." 19 But Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid, for am I in God's place? 20 "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. 21 "So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones." So he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. 22 Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father's household, and Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. Another great example to us all, showing great courage and patience is that of Job, from the book, same name. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

76 | Wisdom vs Wisdom | OT general | Rowdy | 121735
It's thought that Solomon wrote 3 books and wrote several of the Psalms. It appears he wrote the Song of Solomon early in his life when he was giving his life to pleasure with a multitude of women and wives. He probably wrote some Psalms and Proverbs relatively about the same time. Whereas it is thought he wrote the Ecclesiastes late in his life. You remember God promised him a long life and one of unsurpassed riches and wisdom. God kept his promise about riches and wisdom but Solomon didn't keep his relationship sacred like his father David. So it appears Solomon grew melancholy because he had allowed himself to experience every form of sin known to man along with all the attempts at being Godly. I think the book of Ecclesiastes is especially appropriate for us as modern people on earth today, as it speaks to people who are incredibly successful and have reached a high point in development by human standards but yet seem to be lacking something. That something is God. I've touched on this subject as have several others. We're all worried that our country is following the footsteps of previous nations who left their God, i.e. the Roman Empire. Hopefully, we can turn this situation around and rediscover our Godly roots as a nation. God bless. --Rowdy |

I assume you've already studied the only place in the Bible that mentions giants but just in case others need it...1 Chr 20. I'm not sure this is very helpful to you but God bless. --Rowdy |

79 | candidates for water baptism | NT general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 109960
I can only describe what I do and those with whom I worship. Since we don't have the Holy Spirit's baptism of miraclous powers to help us, we have to get to know the person(s) in question. Form that close of bond of friendship, real friendship, the kind that let's them know we really have their soul's interest at heart. Find out what they know of the scriptures and what they already believe. You may remember, each of the example of saving people in the Bible starts with the person where they're at. Apollos, for instance already believed in God but was teaching John the Baptist baptism so he needed to be corrected. Anyway, after confirming and teaching as necessary God's plan of salvation, it's just a matter of time until that new disciple of God is ready to commit his whole life to Christ as his savior and Lord. It might be mentioned here, it's also a good idea to recite the Lord's caution about the sacrifice of this decision, and the fact that this new babe in Christ will face the very real possibility of ridicule and maybe even persecution, especially in another country. Until this process is completed, that is until he/she makes that committment, they're not able to be added to the Lord's church as we see demonstrated through the Book of Acts and the NT. But that doesn't mean we stop loving them, we just have to wait in accordance with God's time-table. We plant the seed and let God provide for the ultimate fruit within. Good question and God bless. |

80 | Worshiptainment | NT general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 110326
The only response I can think of is that of God's Word. I've found it's true like so many have said before: God's Word has literally amazing depth and breadth. It covers every imaginable subject we NEED to know about God and eternity. When we present God's Word in its simplicity and straight forwardness, its inner beauty shouts to those who are receptive to it. God proclaims "Here I am, I love you and here's how bad I want you back." I can only say instead of complaining about all the garbage and the bad stuff in the world, we need to keep looking and find people that are truly interested in sticking to the Bible and love souls. I can further say that there's good and bad throughout the world, everywhere. So, continue looking and above all, continue studying God's Word and of course continue praying. God bless you all. |
