381 | making it to heaven after you get saved | 1 John 3:9 | Rowdy | 118122
I'd like to throw in another comment to those good ones already provided: Rev 2:8 "To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again. 9I know your afflictions and your poverty-yet you are rich! I know the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death. I rarely quote from this book as to me it's so controversial and difficult to understand but I take comfort in these 7 letters written directly from our Lord to His children in these different cities. I think it does us good to review them, both for us on an individual basis as well as from a congregation perspective. The one above is one of the seven in which our Lord does NOT have any words of criticism or a harsh rebuke, just words of praise and encouragement to keep the faith. That is the most important directive to us as christians in verse 10 to "Be faithful, even to death." God bless. --Rowdy |

382 | A witness of the (w)Word? Yes. Both? | 1 John 5:6 | Rowdy | 122832
Ray, my dear friend, I must admit you do seem to be just a little obsessed by this ministry of yours, as alluded to by Searcher. Maybe you've been called to this ministry but it seems to be dominating almost all your posts to the Forum, and thereby limiting the effectiveness of your posts if we on the Forum see it as being obsessive. But ultimately it's your call, between you and God. I do hope and pray God blesses you in your continued study of His Word. --Rowdy |

383 | Rowdy, How were John/ Jesus obsessive? | 1 John 5:6 | Rowdy | 122858
I was comparing their ministries with man's standards. Since John was dressed with the clothing of a Nazarene and stayed out in the desert and almost everything said and done by Jesus was bizarre by human standards. The manner of His trial, death and ressurection alone make His life stand out as completely obsessed with His Father. God bless. --Rowdy |

384 | Can we agree? A case of agreement? | 1 John 5:8 | Rowdy | 119246
First of all, I have to say, I'm not sure how productive this discussion is, but I'll comment for what it's worth. It seems to me that whenever the Bible talks about THE Spirit, it's talking about one of the Godhead so I'm naturally inclined toward capitalizing the word as in the first two versions. The only other kind of spirit that I would understand the Bible might mention would be for example the spirit of man. In that case, it should never be capitalized as it is never meant to be Godly in our basic nature. In your opinion, is there yet another or a 3rd kind of spirit in the Bible? If so, what are your conditions for capitalizing or not capitalizing it? So, I'll let you go back to counting the tally of the citations of spirit in God's Word. But tell me, what is all this going to do for you when you get finished with that tally? I pray for God's blessings on you. --Rowdy |

385 | Major critical problem with 3 John? | 3 John 1:1 | Rowdy | 110937
I can only guess you're referring to the portion about Diotrephes, as follows: 5Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers, even though they are strangers to you. 6They have told the church about your love. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God. 7It was for the sake of the Name that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans. 8We ought therefore to show hospitality to such men so that we may work together for the truth. 9I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will have nothing to do with us. 10So if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, gossiping maliciously about us. Not satisfied with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers. He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church. A word of caution is warrented here. All of the harsh treatments that are shown throughout the Bible almost always have the assistance of the Holy Spirit. For example: the punishment of Ananias and Sophira for lying about money and Simon the Sorecer made blind by Apostle Paul. With the help of the Holy Spirit, these individuals were identified as being motivated by evil or the Devil, thus they were dealth with rather harshly. We on the other hand, CANNOT see into the hearts of our fellow christians or even sinners. We can only inspect and ask them about their actions and their words. So we talk gently with people and try to find out their true motivation. If a person proves over and over again, his only motivation is to merely get all the selfish gain out of this world, then we should "shake the dust off our shoes" and leave him, give him up to God. HOWEVER, if we don't have that proof of this persons attitude or the condition of his heart toward God then we should always assume there's reason to hope he or she might repent. Thus we must tread lightly, ask the right questions, know God's word but above all, love the souls of God's children for if we don't we jepordize our own soul's ultimate home for eternity. I hope this is close to what you're looking for. If not, how about elaborating and give us a few details. God bless. |

386 | what is a citation,echo and allusion | Revelation | Rowdy | 118150
Found a website for you with lots of stuff about all 3 of these terms but it's all about symbols and unusual conclusions in Revelation. So I would urge caution. So many of these kind of writings from common men are filled with a lot of junk and they don't seem to harmonize with the Bible as a whole. But here it is: www.andrews.edu AGAIN, I would urge you to study God's Word and give It first preference far above anything else written in this world. God bless you in your study of His Word. Above all, one should NOT base a whole new philosophy different to the Word of God when we're strictly forbidden to do so even if it comes from "angels." Instead we should treat it as a false teaching or false doctrine IAW Gal 1:6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-- 7which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! 9As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned! God bless. --Rowdy |

387 | sermon ideas for preaching rev.2:18-29 | Revelation | Rowdy | 123200
I myself haven't preached on this subject but I heard a sermon on this topic but the preacher covered all 7 letters just briefly. His position with which I agree was that all 7 letters represent in a broad general manner all of the different responses from our Lord to all the many different congregations throughout all of time, past, present and future. From this one letter, one can only point out the obvious warning against idolatry and false teaching. One should also emphasize staying faithful to our first love, Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of His beloved church, His bride. Rev 2:18 "And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: The Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet are like burnished bronze, says this: 19 'I know your deeds, and your love and faith and service and perseverance, and that your deeds of late are greater than at first. 20 'But I have this against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and she teaches and leads My bond-servants astray so that they commit acts of immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. 21 'I gave her time to repent, and she does not want to repent of her immorality. 22 'Behold, I will throw her on a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of her deeds. 23 'And I will kill her children with pestilence, and all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds. 24 'But I say to you, the rest who are in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not known the deep things of Satan, as they call them--I place no other burden on you. 25 'Nevertheless what you have, hold fast until I come. 26 'He who overcomes, and he who keeps My deeds until the end, TO HIM I WILL GIVE AUTHORITY OVER THE NATIONS; 27 AND HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON, AS THE VESSELS OF THE POTTER ARE BROKEN TO PIECES, as I also have received authority from My Father; 28 and I will give him the morning star. 29 'He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.' I would go ahead and preach what the Lord has to say about the other six churches. In one way or another, we all can see ourselves as individuals or as congregations and apply the instructions as needed. Sometimes this involves taking heed of the instructions from one or more and act accordingly. I take great comfort in the fact that these first 3 chapters of Revelation is not filled with so much figurative symbolism and we can take these letters to the 7 churches (congregations) to heart. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

388 | description appear in the old testament | Rev 1:14 | Rowdy | 118258
Although it's not specifically stated as much, I think almost everyone agrees this passage is describing Christ. Isaiah 53:1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Apparently Jesus' appearance was about average according to verse 2. I don't know for certain but I don't think you find any specific description of Christ, the kind you're looking for in the OT. Just me personally, I'm thinking that's a good thing. If his appearance were described somewhere accurately in the Bible, then those physcial characteristics would turn into items of worship for some folks and might even cause fights between parents, etc. God bless. --Rowdy |

389 | Rowdy, where is your Scriptural support? | Rev 7:17 | Rowdy | 121360
This is easy as I'm sure you already knew for Jesus says Luke 19:22 "He *said to him, 'By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow? John 12:48 "He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day. and then in Matt 16:19 "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven." Matt 18:18 "Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven. also in 2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; I think there's more but that should be enough. After all, the Lord is God Almighty and if He says it once, it's good enough for christians, correct? God bless. --Rowdy |

390 | LIERS WILL NOT INHERIT,OR SEE KINGDOM OF | Rev 21:1 | Rowdy | 109975
I believe you're looking for the following: Revelation 21 7He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. 8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." 9One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." God bless. |

391 | adding to the Bible | Rev 22:18 | Rowdy | 112404
I think you've received some excellent guidance from Makarios and WarriorOne but I would add just one more thing. I don't know much about the Mormon faith but I did date a Mormon girl once and went with her to her worship assembly. I must admit they have a great "family life and atmosphere." I was a little envious. Generally, I've heard from folks from around the world that most mormons are great at being good moral people and have a loving spirit. So if you can convert one or more of them, they should be a great asset to the Lord's body. Remember the devil is an excellent deceiver and some of these folks will respond favorably upon the truth revealed in a loving way, like our Lord did for us. God bless. |
