61 | ...liars, shall have their part in.... | 1 Sam 21:1 | Michael Draves | 102406
Didn't Joseph Fletcher in Situation Ethics demonstrate how keeping some of the 10 commandments in extreme situations could violate the intent of love? The command 'Do not bear false witness' has been taken as referring to being a witness in a court case rather than referring to general lying yet if someone is not honest in everyday situations no one should believe them as a witness. It could also be interpretted as not claiming to have a word from the Lord when the Lord has not spoken as in Ezekiel 13:1-14:11. I don't think there is a better answer than pray not to be lead into temptation but to be given a way of escape when such extreme situations occurs. But on the more every day side; is there any man who can be happily married and always answer their spouse honestly to 'how do I you like my new hairdo' or 'what do you think of my new dress'? Even Billy Graham back peddled on that one in an interview. 2 Corinthians 3:6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant--not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. Ezekiel 14:9-11 9 "But if the prophet is prevailed upon to speak a word, it is I, the LORD, who have prevailed upon that prophet, and I will stretch out My hand against him and destroy him from among My people Israel. 10 "They will bear the punishment of their iniquity; as the iniquity of the inquirer is, so the iniquity of the prophet will be, 11 in order that the house of Israel may no longer stray from Me and no longer defile themselves with all their transgressions. Thus they will be My people, and I shall be their God,"' declares the Lord GOD." |

62 | killed in battle w/ Philistines | 1 Sam 31:2 | Michael Draves | 150468
1 Sam 31:2 The Philistines overtook Saul and his sons; and the Philistines killed Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua the sons of Saul. 1 Sam 31:3 The battle went heavily against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was badly wounded by the archers. 1 Sam 31:4 Then Saul said to his armor bearer, "Draw your sword and pierce me through with it, otherwise these uncircumcised will come and pierce me through and make sport of me." But his armor bearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. So Saul took his sword and fell on it. 1 Sam 31:5 When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died with him. 1 Sam 31:6 Thus Saul died with his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men on that day together. |

63 | what time span did King David rule? | 2 Sam 1:1 | Michael Draves | 148678
The "Wall Chart of World History" lists Davids reign as from 1055 BC with the beginning of 2 Samuel, after the death of Saul, and ending in 1017 BC. He was anointed much earlier then his reign began. There was a time that Absalom had usurped the throne that the chart says was in 1023 BC.
64 | Desirability of a literal reading? | 2 Sam 16:12 | Michael Draves | 149523
I like the literalness of the NASB for doing bible study but I would suggest you look at more versions of the same verse rather than looking to a verse in another book. There are times that the literal reading of a text would be to indelicate for a pulpit. A literal translation for the idiom rendered "compassion" in Matthew 9:36 is gross. A literal reading of 1 Kings 12:10 for the word translated 'loins' would not be appropriate for a church or a synagogue.
65 | Did King David know about Absalom? | 2 Sam 18:14 | Michael Draves | 157746
Killing Absalom isn't spelled out in the offenses David lists to Solomon for wanting Joab dealt with. 1 Kin 2:5 "Now you also know what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, what he did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, to Abner the son of Ner, and to Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed; he also shed the blood of war in peace. And he put the blood of war on his belt about his waist, and on his sandals on his feet. 1 Kin 2:6 "So act according to your wisdom, and do not let his gray hair go down to Sheol in peace. |

66 | Did King David know about Absalom? | 2 Sam 18:14 | Michael Draves | 157749
I was going to make that assumption until I remembered how unfriendly Solomon was to his brothers as rivals to the throne.
67 | John the Baptish being Elijah | 1 Kings | Michael Draves | 150466
Matthew 11:12 "From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force. Matthew 11:13 "For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John. Matthew 11:14 "And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come. Malachi 4:5 "Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD. |

68 | The Bible is referring to another book? | 1 Kin 14:19 | Michael Draves | 189813
We have Chronicles but it is not the book mentioned because it is not just about the Kings of Israel. The book is not in the Bible and no longer available. Neither are The Wars of the LORD, Jasher, Samuel on the Kingdom, Chronicles of David, Acts of Solomon, Solomon's Natural History, Samuel the Seer, Nathan the Seer, Shemaiah the Seer, Gad the Seer, Ahijah the Shilonite, Visions of Iddo, Jehu the son of Hanani nor Sayings of the Seers.

70 | why does Elisha need music to intercede | 2 Kin 3:15 | Michael Draves | 197505
1 Sam 10:5 "Afterward you will come to the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is; and it shall be as soon as you have come there to the city, that you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and a lyre before them, and they will be prophesying. 1 Chr 25:1 Moreover, David and the commanders of the army set apart for the service some of the sons of Asaph and of Heman and of Jeduthun, who were to prophesy with lyres, harps and cymbals; and the number of those who performed their service was: 1 Chr 25:2 Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah and Asharelah; the sons of Asaph were under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied under the direction of the king. 1 Chr 25:3 Of Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six, under the direction of their father Jeduthun with the harp, who prophesied in giving thanks and praising the LORD. 1 Chr 25:4 Of Heman, the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti and Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, Mahazioth. 1 Chr 25:5 All these were the sons of Heman the king's seer to exalt him according to the words of God, for God gave fourteen sons and three daughters to Heman. 1 Chr 25:6 All these were under the direction of their father to sing in the house of the LORD, with cymbals, harps and lyres, for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the direction of the king. |

71 | 2Kings 3:16 version discrepancy, ESV/NAS | 2 Kin 3:16 | Michael Draves | 204062
There are no variants listed in BHS for 2 King 3:16. The word that contains the idea of "to make" is an Infinitive Absolute. Pratico and Van Pelts basic grammar says an Infinitive Absolute has no real English counter part and that it may be used to emphasize another verb, to give an imperative command, to express simultaneous action or to express action that complements the main verb. An infinitive absolute has no person, number nor gender. The same word occurs in 1 Sam 26:25, Jer 44:17,25, Ezek 23:30 and Prov 23:5.
72 | The Annals of Kings | 1 Chr 1:1 | Michael Draves | 149932
What you are looking for is apparently lost. Beside of 1st and 2nd Kings you have 1st and 2nd Chronicles. The Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English lists in the Biblically based apocryphal section fragments 4Q382 as part of paraphrase on Kings and 4Q481A as part of an Elisha apocryphon.
73 | what king..... | 1 Chr 11:4 | Michael Draves | 150471
1 Chr 11:4 Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there. 1 Chr 11:5 The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You shall not enter here." Nevertheless David captured the stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David). |

74 | Which Asaph is in Psalms 73-89? | 1 Chr 25:1 | Michael Draves | 151697
It is unclear from the preposition itself whether the songs and poems are attributed to or dedicated to Asaph. I would think it more likely a dedication would be made to someone famous. Psalm 77 also refers to Jeduthun who is mentioned in 1 Chron 25:2 with Asaph so it is this Asaph, the one who prophesizes, and not the father of Joah, the recorder, in Isaiah 36:3 who is referred to.
75 | how do you write Jesus in Arimatic ? | Ezra 5:2 | Michael Draves | 117691
The Peshitta may be a translation back into Aramaic. Look at the transliterations of "Yeshua' but not "of Yeshua" such as in Mattai 1:21: http://www.peshitta.org/pdf/Mattich1.pdf You may also want to look at the last four letters on the James Ossuary. Remember it is from right to left so it is on the left. http://www.bib-arch.org/bswb_BAR/bswbba2906f2.html The spelling in Hebrew is a little different from Aramaic even though the letters used in Hebrew are a form of the Aramaic alphabet. After loading fonts from: http://www.studylight.org/fonts/ Do a search for Joshua in the interlinear Bible and you can match the Hebrew words but if you search on Jeshua you should find the Aramaic word you want in Ezra 5:2: http://www.studylight.org/isb |

76 | God tearing down to build up? | Job | Michael Draves | 159249
You will have to decide if it was God who actually brought them down but consider Joseph, Job, Ruth and Naomi, Naaman, and the widow of Zarephath. Jeremiah's call: Jer 1:10 "See, I have appointed you this day over the nations and over the kingdoms, To pluck up and to break down, To destroy and to overthrow, To build and to plant." |

77 | What Value does man place upon himself? | Ps 8:4 | Michael Draves | 149984
Ps 22:6 But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the people. Ps 8:4 What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him? Ps 8:5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty! Ps 8:6 You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, Is 14:13 But you said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north.' Psalm 22 has been interpretted as about Jesus and Isaiah 14 as about Satan. |

78 | apressed peole | Ps 9:9 | Michael Draves | 153902
You might search for oppressed and oppression on the right. Ps 55:11 Destruction is in her midst; Oppression and deceit do not depart from her streets. Ps 55:12 For it is not an enemy who reproaches me, Then I could bear it; Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me, Then I could hide myself from him. Ps 55:13 But it is you, a man my equal, My companion and my familiar friend; Ps 55:14 We who had sweet fellowship together Walked in the house of God in the throng. Ps 55:15 Let death come deceitfully upon them; Let them go down alive to Sheol, For evil is in their dwelling, in their midst. Ps 55:16 As for me, I shall call upon God, And the LORD will save me. Ps 55:17 Evening and morning and at noon, I will complain and murmur, And He will hear my voice. |

80 | contemparty music | Ps 33:3 | Michael Draves | 150578
Try searching for "new song". If contemporary music honors and gives glory to God what is wrong with it? Other than style the main difference I see with praise/worship teams is that they seem to run the service instead of the minister. Ps 33:2 Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre; Sing praises to Him with a harp of ten strings. Ps 33:3 Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy. |
