103 | what is the importance of fasting? | Is 58:6 | Michael Draves | 100927
Fasting in the Old Testament was common during mourning, repentance, and to show humility. Sometimes it was done as an attempt to get prayers heard. Isaiah 58 shows compassion to be an acceptable 'fast'. Jesus indicates in Matthew 6:16 that if you fast don't do it to be seen by people. The disciples did not fast according to Mark 2 until after Jesus' death. A scribe added Matthew 17:21 which makes it sound like fasting was necessary for prayers to be heard to heal a demoniac.

105 | Role of OT priests include physician? | Jer 8:22 | Michael Draves | 157751
Most healing in the Old Testament is attributed to God alone. Prophets were often mediators of healings. Priests appear to have diagnosed if a healing had already transpired. There a few references to physicians. 2 Kin 8:29 So King Joram returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Arameans had inflicted on him at Ramah when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. Then Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel because he was sick. Jer 8:22 Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has not the health of the daughter of my people been restored? 2 Chr 16:12 In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa became diseased in his feet. His disease was severe, yet even in his disease he did not seek the LORD, but the physicians. Lev 14:2 "This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing. Now he shall be brought to the priest, Lev 14:3 and the priest shall go out to the outside of the camp. Thus the priest shall look, and if the infection of leprosy has been healed in the leper, 2 Kin 5:2 Now the Arameans had gone out in bands and had taken captive a little girl from the land of Israel; and she waited on Naaman's wife. |

Apparently they used to be as "the sins of the parents will be visited upon the children" might imply in the 10 commandments. The stoning of Achan and his family would be an example. But it looks like things changed in Jeremiah 31 and Ezekiel 18.

The only claim I remember for a UFO in the Bible was made by Josef F. Blumrich in his book The Spaceships of Ezekiel. http://www.earthportals.com/Portal_Ship/ezekiel.html I think there are better explanations for the vision. |

108 | Is the face of a cherub a bull? | Ezek 1:10 | Michael Draves | 152050
Under the Cherub entry at www.jewishencyclopedia.com are the following: Concerning the form of these cherubim, an authority of the end of the third century says that they had the form of youths, ... . The last-named passage says that the cherubim which Ezekiel saw in his vision (Ezek. x. 1) also had this form, adding that the four creatures at the throne of God were originally man, lion, bull, and eagle, but that Ezekiel implored God to take a cherub instead of a bull; Ezekiel desiring that God should not always look upon a bull, which would continually remind Him of Israel's worship of that animal. It seems that the Talmud had noticed that Ezekiel's conception of the heavenly creatures differed from the traditional one. Following Lenormant's suggestions, Friedrich Delitzsch connected the Hebrew with the Assyrian "kirubu" equals "shedu" (the name of the winged bull). |

109 | Very interesting... | Ezek 1:10 | Michael Draves | 152102
This appears to be just Jewish tradition. If it were in aramaic instead of Hebrew I could understand wanting to change the word bull because it would sound too much like Torah but this is shir in Hebrew. I don't understand how Friedrich Delitzsch connected the Hebrew with the Assyrian saying "kirubu" equals "shedu" (the name of the winged bull). If it were just a miscopy I can see how a final bet could be mistaken for a resh or a dalet but it is less easy to see how the beginning shin might be taken for a kaf and a resh unless it looked messy.

Ezekiel 13:20 KJV Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against your pillows, wherewith ye there hunt the souls to make them fly , and I will tear them from your arms, and will let the souls go , even the souls that ye hunt to make them fly . NASB Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am against your magic bands by which you hunt lives there as birds and I will tear them from your arms ; and I will let them go, even those lives whom you hunt as birds. |

111 | chapter Ezekial God speaking flying up | Ezek 37:11 | Michael Draves | 226032
Are you saying the dry bones are resurrected but not raptured? The dry bones are how the people in Exile feel. Ezek 37:11 Then He said to me, "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel; behold, they say, 'Our bones are dried up and our hope has perished. We are completely cut off.' |

112 | "son of God" vs. "son of Man" | Daniel | Michael Draves | 131685
In the old testament "Son of Man" is generally a title for a prophet who could be both a representative of mankind to God and God to mankind. Though I can't think of an example it literally could have been used for a son of Adam: Abel, Cain or Seth or any male child. In poetry it might just be a used as a parallel contrast; ex. "What is man that your are mindful of him and the son of man..." . The meaning gets elevated in Daniel which would seem to be the primary basis for its use in the Gospels. Son of God could refer to Adam as in Luke's Geaneology, it it used as a title for the king such as in Solomon's dream and possibly Psalm 2, Israel, angels, and maybe once early in Genesis as possibly any male descendent of Adam. The one who appears in the Lion's den of Daniel and Psalm 2 are important to the usage in the Gospels. Look at the context in which the titles occur especially if they are a quote or allusion to another passage. |

Matt 3:11 "As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Mark 1:8 "I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." Luke 3:16 John answered and said to them all, "As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. John 1:33 "I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, 'He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.' Acts 1:5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." Acts 11:16 "And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' |

Matt 4:6 and *said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, 'HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU'; and 'ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'" Matt 4:7 Jesus said to him, "On the other hand, it is written, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'" Eccl 9:11 I again saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift and the battle is not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise nor wealth to the discerning nor favor to men of ability; for time and chance overtake them all. James 4:13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." James 4:14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. James 4:15 Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that." |
