Bible Question: Did the OT priests, or any of the priestly tribe, take part in Jewish society as physicians or surgeons? Was that a role, traditional or designated, that fell to them? And if not the Levites, then who did fulfill that role? |
Bible Answer: Most healing in the Old Testament is attributed to God alone. Prophets were often mediators of healings. Priests appear to have diagnosed if a healing had already transpired. There a few references to physicians. 2 Kin 8:29 So King Joram returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Arameans had inflicted on him at Ramah when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. Then Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel because he was sick. Jer 8:22 Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has not the health of the daughter of my people been restored? 2 Chr 16:12 In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa became diseased in his feet. His disease was severe, yet even in his disease he did not seek the LORD, but the physicians. Lev 14:2 "This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing. Now he shall be brought to the priest, Lev 14:3 and the priest shall go out to the outside of the camp. Thus the priest shall look, and if the infection of leprosy has been healed in the leper, 2 Kin 5:2 Now the Arameans had gone out in bands and had taken captive a little girl from the land of Israel; and she waited on Naaman's wife. |
