82 | Why is it a young man? | Ps 119:9 | Michael Draves | 116938
Your capitalization of YOUNG seems to imply you are concerned about noninclusivity through ageism rather than asking about MAN which would imply a concern about sexism. The Psalm is written as an acrostic. Acrostics might just have one verse that start with each letter of the alphabet where this poem has stanzas of eight verses beginning with each subsequent letter. Acrostics were meant as a memorization aid. Memorization of something this large might be encouraged for the young. What one memorizes when young will serve them their whole life through old age. |

84 | How do people get marriage out of this | Prov 5:15 | Michael Draves | 165365
Context. It is a part of a unit that goes at least through 5:20. Look at 5:18. Prov 5:15 Drink water from your own cistern And fresh water from your own well. Prov 5:16 Should your springs be dispersed abroad, Streams of water in the streets? Prov 5:17 Let them be yours alone And not for strangers with you. Prov 5:18 Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice in the wife of your youth. Prov 5:19 As a loving hind and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; Be exhilarated always with her love. Prov 5:20 For why should you, my son, be exhilarated with an adulteress And embrace the bosom of a foreigner? |

85 | Explain a lying tongue vs. false witness | Prov 6:19 | Michael Draves | 167045
Lying is a broader category that contains false witness as a subset. Telling any falsehood is lying. False witness would definitely include lying when testifying in a courtroom and it might include false prophecy as in Ezekiel 13. The Ten Commandments refer to bearing false witness and not the broader category of lying.
86 | helping my family financially? | Prov 13:18 | Michael Draves | 200308
1 Tim 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. Is 58:6 "Is this not the fast which I choose, To loosen the bonds of wickedness, To undo the bands of the yoke, And to let the oppressed go free And break every yoke? Is 58:7 "Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry And bring the homeless poor into the house; When you see the naked, to cover him; And not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Mark 7:9 He was also saying to them, "You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. Mark 7:10 "For Moses said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER'; and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH'; Mark 7:11 but you say, 'If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),' Mark 7:12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; Mark 7:13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that." Prov 6:1 My son, if you have become surety for your neighbor, Have given a pledge for a stranger, Prov 6:2 If you have been snared with the words of your mouth, Have been caught with the words of your mouth, Prov 6:3 Do this then, my son, and deliver yourself; Since you have come into the hand of your neighbor, Go, humble yourself, and importune your neighbor. Prov 6:4 Give no sleep to your eyes, Nor slumber to your eyelids; Prov 6:5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hunter's hand And like a bird from the hand of the fowler. Prov 19:19 A man of great anger will bear the penalty, For if you rescue him, you will only have to do it again. Prov 30:15a The leech has two daughters, "Give," "Give." Mal 4:5 "Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD. Mal 4:6 "He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse." |

87 | No Replies from NOTES | Prov 15:1 | Michael Draves | 233912
You really come accross as trying to stir up trouble. I didn't know about the convention until recently and was told by someone that had not been coming here as long but they are much more active. I am probably the most liberal person here but I try to abide by the terms of use. When I gave you the answer about the fall of the devil it was way outside normal Christian theology but it is completely Biblical and you can see it is missing. That means it still exists if you know the number to find it but it can't be seen otherwise though you may have a email linking you to the thread. If it were obliterated there would have been two dots replacing it. I am not sure why you and I have not been booted. If you have a new question post it at the top. If it is a response post it as a note. No one is obligated to answer anything. Try to not come off as so confrontational and you might get more feedback.

There are some slight differences between the printed Brenton (1851 Ninth reprint in 2001 by Hendrickson 0-913573-44-2) and the copy on www.studylight.org the word before a slash is from Brenton. You can find different Septuagint texts at http://www.kalvesmaki.com/LXX/Texts.htm#Translations . If you want a printed copy of a book in the Septuagint that has a critical apparatus I suggest you see if the Göttingen series copy is ready. |

89 | should working wife have her own money? | Prov 31:31 | Michael Draves | 148119
Without studying Hebrew (or have some really good Bible software) you can not get the exact parsing to diagram and do an exegesis of the verse but you can do some word study on this verse itself on the internet. Proverbs 31:10 to 31:31 is an acrostic which means the poet made each verse start with each letter of the hebrew alphabet in alphabetical order. To the right of this web page (http://www.studybibleforum.com) put in the Book Chapter:verse search Prov 31:31 and click Go. If you see a green C then click it to see the verse in context. A green N indicates there were notes put it may just be your own unanswered question. Clicking a green I will show you the Strongs concordance numbers, a transliteration of the Hebrew and the possible ways it has been translated. Read 31:10 to 31:31 from the different translations at http://bible.crosswalk.com or http://www.biblegateway.com to hear 31:31 in context. Search the interlinear at http://www.studylight.org/isb/ for Prov 31:31 and click on the words you are interested in the possible meanings of. If you want to see the definitions in a lexicon you can download for free "The Abridged Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew-English Lexicon of the Old Testament from http://www.logos.com/ebooks/details/bdba after installing the Libronix DLS. You may find useful commentaries on the above sites and you can try to see if different journals have any information online at http://www.bsw.org/ejournals.php . |

90 | please explain chapter 2 verses 1-26 | Ecclesiastes | Michael Draves | 107838
Qohelet alludes in Chapter 2 to the creations of Solomon. In the first chapter is the poem on toil with its observations of God's creation. For the wise observer who does not sleep well and can not stop his observing while he is awake there is no Sabbath except disability and death. Since the result of ones work seems pointless because it has to be left to someone who may be unworthy and unappreciative then Qohelet surmises that enjoyment of your work itself and enjoying what you can of the fruits of your labor should be done while you can.
91 | verses are related to laws of motion | Ecclesiastes | Michael Draves | 163655
I don't think you will find what your looking for but these are the closest I could think of: Eccl 1:6 Blowing toward the south, Then turning toward the north, The wind continues swirling along; And on its circular courses the wind returns. Eccl 4:12 And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart. Eccl 11:3 If the clouds are full, they pour out rain upon the earth; and whether a tree falls toward the south or toward the north, wherever the tree falls, there it lies. |

92 | Ecclesiates in the bible who was she/he? | Eccl 1:1 | Michael Draves | 165371
The word 'Qohelet' looks like it has a female ending. However a female would not have written Eccl 7:26 so the ending is probably irregular: Eccl 7:26 And I discovered more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, whose hands are chains. One who is pleasing to God will escape from her, but the sinner will be captured by her. The title line, Eccl 1:1, and the Epilogue, Eccl 12:9-14, are implied to be written by someone other than the main author. The phrase 'says Qohelet' in Eccl 1:2, 7:27, and 12:8 would also be likely interjections by someone else. This only leaves the title 'Qohelet' to occur in Eccl 1:12. It does sound like Eccl 1:12 to Eccl 2:9 refer to Solomon. However in Eccl 1:16 there is a problem. Eccl 1:16 I said to myself, "Behold, I have magnified and increased wisdom more than all who were over Jerusalem before me; and my mind has observed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge." Would Solomon say this if David was the only Hebrew to reign in Jerusalem before him? There were others who reigned there before him but they were all Gentiles. Keep an open mind about authorship. Listen for clues about the type of person who wrote it. For example Eccl 1:8 sounds like it might have been written by a scribe. (Substitute 'words' for 'things' since they are the same word in Hebrew.) Eccl 1:8 All things are wearisome; Man is not able to tell it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, Nor is the ear filled with hearing. However just because it sounds like a scribe it can't rule out a king or any other Hebrew for certain because they were all to make their own copy of the Torah. |

93 | Number 216 | Eccl 1:2 | Michael Draves | 157704
They probably got 216 by multiplying 6x6x6. Doubt they borrowed the idea from the movie Pi. Only know one possible use of 216 in the Bible and that is for counting the number of verses in Ecclesiastes without the 6 verse epilogue. The first word DBRY (the words of) in Ecclesiastes has a value of 216. The phrase translated Vanity of Vanities all is Vanity also has a value of 216 if the spelling of "all" in the Masoretic Text is correct otherwise the phrase has a value of 222 which is the total number of verses in Ecclesiastes. Counting verses, words and letters may have been a wise practice for accuracy but trying to find meaning in every number is like chasing the wind. Meaningless of meaninglessness its all meaningless.

http://www.franciscan-archive.org/patriarcha/opera/canticle.html The Canticle of Brother Son or The Praises of the Creatures: May Thou be praised, my Lord, for our sister, bodily death, whom no man living can escape Woe to those, who die in mortal sin: blessed those whom she will find in Thy most holy desires, because the second death will do them no evil (cf. Apoc 2:11; 20:6) http://www.franciscan-archive.org/patriarcha/opera/letters.html A Letter to the Faithful - An Exhortation to the Brothers and Sisters of Penance However all those men and women, who are not in penance, · and do not receive the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, · and work vices and sins and who walk after wicked concupiscence and the wicked desires of their flesh, · and do not observe, what they have promised the Lord, 35 · and serve the world bodily by carnal desires and anxious concerns (sollicitudo) for the world (saeculum) and by the cares of this life: · (these) held back by the devil, whose sons they are and whose works they do (cf. Jn 8:41), 36 are blind, · because they do not see the True Light, Our Lord Jesus Christ. · They do not have spiritual wisdom, because they do not have the Son of God who is the True Wisdom of the Father, · of whom it is said: "Their wisdom is swallowed up" (Ps 106:27 - Rom. Ps.); and "Cursed are they who turn away from Thy mandates" (Ps 118:21). · They see and acknowledge, they know and work wicked things and they themselves knowingly loose their souls. · See, blind ones, deceived by your enemies: by the flesh, the world, and the devil; that it is sweet to the body to work sin and bitter to work to serve God; · because all vices and sins come forth and "proceed from the heart of man," just as the Lord says in the Gospel (cf. Mk 7:21). · And you shall have nothing in this age nor in the one to come. · And you think you will posses the vanities of this generation (saeculum) for a long time, but you have been deceived, since there shall come the day and hour, of which you do not think, know or pay attention; the body weakens, death approaches and thus one dies a bitter death. · And wherever, whenever, however a man dies in culpable sin, without penance and satisfaction, if he can make satisfaction and does not make satisfaction, the devil tears his soul from his body with such anguish and tribulation, that no one can know it, except him who experiences it. · And all the talents and power and "knowledge and wisdom" (2 Chron 1:12), which they thought they had, is borne away from them (cf. Lk 8:18; Mk 4:25). · And he bequeathed (these) to neighbors and friends and these bore off and divided his substance, 37 and said afterwards: "Cursed be his soul, since he could have given us more and acquired what he did not acquire." · Worms eat the body, and thus perished body and soul in this short age and they shall go into Hell, where they will be tortured without end. |

96 | what does fear mean (respect or scared) | Eccl 8:13 | Michael Draves | 150123
Most places like proverbs the idea is closer to repect or awe. In Ecclesiastes it can be read as actually being afraid.
97 | In OT, where did they go when they died? | Eccl 9:1 | Michael Draves | 160558
Eccl 9:2 It is the same for all. There is one fate for the righteous and for the wicked; for the good, for the clean and for the unclean; for the man who offers a sacrifice and for the one who does not sacrifice. As the good man is, so is the sinner; as the swearer is, so is the one who is afraid to swear. Eccl 9:3 This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one fate for all men. Furthermore, the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil and insanity is in their hearts throughout their lives. Afterwards they go to the dead. Eccl 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might; for there is no activity or planning or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol where you are going. Eccl 3:11 He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end. |

98 | When Is Enough Enough? | Is 6:5 | Michael Draves | 103755
This is the FCCs test on obscenity that hasn't changed: To be obscene, material must meet a three-prong test: (1) the average person, applying contemporary community standards, must find that the material, as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest; (2) the material must depict or describe, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable law; and (3) the material, taken as a whole, must lack serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value. http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/obscene.html This is the ruling that prompted the rumors: http://www.fcc.gov/eb/Orders/2003/DA-03-3045A1.html |

99 | What is the longest word in the bible? | Is 8:3 | Michael Draves | 152134
If you are looking for an answer of Maher-shalal-hash-baz in Isaiah 8:3 because it is the longest word you find in an English Bible with 18 letters it is only 10 letters in Hebrew and that is in 4 words. Esther 9:3 has a Hebrew word that is 11 letters and means "and the satraps". I would guess there are longer Greek words in the New Testament. What verse has the longest word in the original languages of the Bible and what does it mean?

Ezra 4:4 Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah, and frightened them from building, Neh 4:4 Hear, O our God, how we are despised! Return their reproach on their own heads and give them up for plunder in a land of captivity. 1 Tim 4:12 Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. Luke 18:15 And they were bringing even their babies to Him so that He would touch them, but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them. Luke 17:2 "It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble. 1 Sam 18:11 Saul hurled the spear for he thought, "I will pin David to the wall." But David escaped from his presence twice. Acts 5:40 They took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them. |
