561 | For he who speaks in an unknown tongue | 1 Cor 14:1 | stjohn | 218858
Question: "What is the gift of speaking in tongues?" Answer: The first occurrence of speaking in tongues occurred on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4. The apostles went out and shared the gospel with the crowds, speaking to them in their own languages: “We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” (Acts 2:11). The Greek word translated tongues literally means “languages.” Therefore, the gift of tongues is speaking in a language a person does not know in order to minister to someone who does speak that language. In 1 Corinthians chapters 12–14, Paul discusses miraculous gifts, saying, “Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?” (1 Corinthians 14:6). According to the apostle Paul, and in agreement with the tongues described in Acts, speaking in tongues is valuable to the one hearing God’s message in his or her own language, but it is useless to everyone else unless it is interpreted/translated. A person with the gift of interpreting tongues (1 Corinthians 12:30) could understand what a tongues-speaker was saying even though he did not know the language that was being spoken. The tongues interpreter would then communicate the message of the tongues speaker to everyone else, so all could understand. “For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says” (1 Corinthians 14:13). Paul’s conclusion regarding tongues that were not interpreted is powerful: “But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue” (1 Corinthians 14:19). Is the gift of tongues for today? First Corinthians 13:8 mentions the gift of tongues ceasing, although it connects the ceasing with the arrival of the “perfect” in 1 Corinthians 13:10. Some point to a difference in the tense of the Greek verbs referring to prophecy and knowledge “ceasing” and that of tongues “being ceased” as evidence for tongues ceasing before the arrival of the “perfect.” While possible, this is not explicitly clear from the text. Some also point to passages such as Isaiah 28:11 and Joel 2:28-29 as evidence that speaking in tongues was a sign of God's oncoming judgment. First Corinthians 14:22 describes tongues as a “sign to unbelievers.” According to this argument, the gift of tongues was a warning to the Jews that God was going to judge Israel for rejecting Jesus Christ as Messiah. Therefore, when God did in fact judge Israel (with the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in A.D. 70), the gift of tongues would no longer serve its intended purpose. While this view is possible, the primary purpose of tongues being fulfilled does not necessarily demand its cessation. Scripture does not conclusively assert that the gift of speaking in tongues has ceased. At the same time, if the gift of speaking in tongues were active in the church today, it would be performed in agreement with Scripture. It would be a real and intelligible language (1 Corinthians 14:10). It would be for the purpose of communicating God's Word with a person of another language (Acts 2:6-12). It would be in agreement with the command God gave through the apostle Paul, “If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God” (1 Corinthians 14:27-28). It would also be in accordance with 1 Corinthians 14:33, “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” God most definitely can give a person the gift of speaking in tongues to enable him or her to communicate with a person who speaks another language. The Holy Spirit is sovereign in the dispersion of the spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:11). Just imagine how much more productive missionaries could be if they did not have to go to language school, and were instantly able to speak to people in their own language. However, God does not seem to be doing this. Tongues does not seem to occur today in the manner it did in the New Testament, despite the fact that it would be immensely useful. The vast majority of believers who claim to practice the gift of speaking in tongues do not do so in agreement with the Scriptures mentioned above. These facts lead to the conclusion that the gift of tongues has ceased or is at least a rarity in God's plan for the church today. http://www.gotquestions.org/gift-of-tongues.html |

563 | should all we be speaking tongues aloud | 1 Cor 14:23 | stjohn | 187154
Dear Hodgit, Welcome to my heart! I can really relate to you, and you are most defiantly right in your thinking that it should be a privet thing. You mentioned that you saw this in reading the Scripture. Well, that should be your answer. You've got my amen! I must have read 1Cor. 50 times! To see if maybe I was missing something, because some at my church sure were. I hope no-one gets me wrong here because I do believe that some have this gift, Its just that unfortunately most that practice it, I believe do not have it, they are just copying those around them. I was even told that I should practice making gobbledygook sounds, and then the Holly Spirit would take over and do the Job for me. Well I thought. If I take it, then its not a gift is it? Let me tell you my friend, they were making me feel like a half baked Christian! But, I just thank God that He, that is the Holly Spirit, led me out of there. And don't get me wrong, I still have fellowship with them, some of them that is, but I don't go to that church. I have faith that God will keep his own no mater were they are. I believe there are believers in all kinds of churches and Ism's and He knows who they are, and He will take care of them and make sure they get fed what they need. They are not the problem, its the ones teaching that are the problem. And this is the verse that really gets to me. read this please. 1 Cor 14:23 Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad? Well my friend, how are we going to reach the lost sinners of the world if they think we are crazy?-! And this is just the kind of thing that the media gets hold of and points their finger and says. Lookie there, them crazy Christians are at it again! God bless. John |

Hello It isWritten, Welcome home! Have a look at these verses. 2 Cor 5:6 Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord-- 2 Cor 5:8 we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. Luke 23:43 And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise." I hope this helps you. God bless John |

567 | what is this verse talking about | 2 Cor 6:4 | stjohn | 216359
Hi FHeath, Welcome to the forum! Read the whole chapter, it should be self explanatory. What is being said is that in everything we go through, whether it be joy or sadness, pain, suffering, or contentment, good health and good times. As children of the Most High God we go through all things with Joy in knowing He is our strength to suffer the bad along with the good. The Bible doesn't teach, nor does God ever promise a bed of roses in this life and as long as we are in this world, but He does promise His Spirit will sustain us and more; because even in suffering, when we lean on Him, it's all good. V 10 "as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing yet possessing all things." John |

568 | does God still send prophets? | 2 Cor 11:13 | stjohn | 214483
William Branham, said many things would happen that symply did not hapen. He also sads these things were given to him by an angle. That makes him a false peophet. "For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds." 2 Cor 11:13-15 "If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes true, concerning which he spoke to you, saying, 'Let us go after other gods (whom you have not known) and let us serve them,' you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for the LORD your God is testing you to find out if you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul." Deut 13:1-3 John |

569 | Where is the third heaven? | 2 Cor 12:2 | stjohn | 218608
To put it in simple terms. In Paul's culture, and many ancient cultures, the first heaven is thought to be where the birds fly and clouds float, the second heaven is thought of as where the sun moon and star's reside, and the third heaven is the spiritual realm where God and the angels make their residence. |

570 | Did Jesus heal everyone? | 2 Cor 12:9 | stjohn | 209774
Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me--to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Cor 12:7-10 He turned the Apostle Paul down, three times. And Paul, who by the power of God had raised the dead; in communication with Timothy; Did not heal him by this power of God imputed to him. So why then did he tell Timothy, to take something for his stomach, instead of just telling him to have faith and, God would heal him? John |

571 | scripture on why we go through trials | 2 Cor 12:10 | stjohn | 215540
Hi LovemyLord, "Why go through them?" Thats a good question. I would say because Jesus want's to build strong Christians characters with strong Christian character. We seldom learn anything of great value when things are going smoothly. We tend to just sit back and enjoy the ride. But God want's us to grow and learn to be fighters for truth and His Holy Word, and in spreading His Gospel of Salvation to the lost world. This is a tough job that takes mentally and spiritually tough people to do and do well. Paul writes in his 2nd letter to the Corinthians: "And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong." 2 Cor 12:9-10 And in Romans 15:1: "Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength and not just please ourselves." John |

572 | forgiveness | 2 Cor 13:5 | stjohn | 189308
Hi NightJay, I'm sorry for your trouble. I always try to remember that Jesus was a friend of sinners. He did not turn His back on the world even tho the world had gone their way and turned to sin. He died so that all the sins of the world would be forgiven. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. It is very important for you to look past the sin and look to Jesus. May I ask is your girlfriend a believer? Is she a born again believer in Jesus? If so you need to talk to her about her sin. You said it was infidelity, were the two of you in sin together? if so you and she were sining as well, and you also need to confess your sin to Jesus. God bless. John |

574 | Please eplain Galatians 3:10 | Gal 3:2 | stjohn | 211413
Hi studies, Paul pretty much sets this up for us in vv 1-3 v1 You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? v2 This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? v3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? In other words they were trying to go beyond what they had been given to Salvation by adding the law back into the works of salvation that, had been done by Christ and Christ alone on the Cross. The law curses everyone; for no one could keep it but Christ, but He became cursed for us and hung on the cross for us and our sin in our failure to keep the law. He is the ONLY one to keep the law, and it is futile to think otherwise, or try to go beyond what we received by faith [i.e.-Salvation from hell by and through Christ's sacrifice on the cross] to gain favor or salvation from God. Paul is telling them if they want to try to keep the law, they are in deep trouble, because none can and none ever did but Christ. "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in "ALL" things which are written in the book of the law" [emphasis in "CAPS" is mine] I pray this helps God bless John |

575 | More details on Galatians 3:10 | Gal 3:2 | stjohn | 211519
Hi studies: I know of no Scripture that teaches of a prohibition of labor on Sunday. Sunday is what we call the Lords day, so called because of His resurrection on the first day of the week, Sunday, which is not the Sabbath nor is the Sabbath work prohibition carried on under the new covenant as I understand it. God bless John |

576 | the scripture I was looking at | Gal 3:2 | stjohn | 211530
Dear studies: Here are some Scripture that may help shed some light for your understanding. "So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or Sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ" Colossians 2:16–17 Observance of the Sabbath law was done away with by Jesus Christ on the cross because He by His death for our transgression of the law, He quite effectively "wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us" Colossians 2:14 Again, Paul speaks to this subject in his letter to the Romans. "One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it" Romans 14:5–6a And again in his letter to the Galations he ask them why they would even want to be once again in bondage of the law when they have been set free from it. "But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? You observe days and months and seasons and years" Galatians 4:9–10 I hope this helps you. 578 | Who decides which marriages God honors? | Ephesians | stjohn | 200759
Hello Mainey, You said, "Some of us have all kinds of junk in our trunk at the time of the marriage ceremony, but man assumes that God honors the marriage. vows" May I say that we all have junk in our trunk, and God honors vows that are kept by those that make them. IMHO it sounds like someone is looking for an out. Anyone going into a marriage should have a good biblicle understanding going in, and that is know that we are, and I mean none of us are, perfict. I've been with my wife for over 30 years. and I have found, the only thing man should assume is that marriage with all it's benifits, at times, is going to be verry tough! The sooner we work out the rough spots, the smother the road gets. Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, Are you willing to give your life for your wife? Eph 5:28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; Col 3:19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them. God bless John |

579 | wrong and right to marry the person | Ephesians | stjohn | 206863
Hello twins, Welcome to the forum! The Bible is very clear about who a Christian marries! There really shouldn't be any question about being unequally yoked with an unbeliever. We are told very clearly, not to do it! "Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?" 2 Cor 6:14-15 God bless John |

580 | What is the spritiual implication here? | Eph 1:3 | stjohn | 195699
Hello poorinspirit, Welcome to the forum! Have a look at these verses in 1 Cor 12:27-30 , I think scripture speaks pretty clearly on this subject, "Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?" In these verses, Paul speaks clearly that not all have been given all the gifts/blessings, also implying that not all will. And, I believe, that we should not look at God's blessings as if they are at "our" disposal, but rather, "we" are at God's disposal. God, chooses Who gets what gifts, not us. We are empty vessels to be filled at His sovereign will. Know this my friend, that God will bless us with everything we will ever need, and more then we deserve. :-) God bless John |
