501 | many years did Jesus minister | John 19:30 | stjohn | 212752
Hi, Pastor, I must say, that seems like an odd question from a pastor. :-) Jesus the Christ, the only begotten Son of the Father, served God the Father in the flesh and here on Earth, for about 33 years. His public ministry was about 3 years. John |

502 | why jesus had not allowed mary to touch | John 20:17 | stjohn | 202546
Hi jayaraj: Welcome to the forum! Scripture doesn't really say why, other then Jesus instructed her not to cling to Him as He had not yet ascended to the Father. I believe we can assume however that He did ascended to the Father in the interim between verse 17 and verse 19. Also we are aware that soon after, He instructs Thomas to touch Him. So we assume according to His very words, that He somehow, needed to. That He did indeed, ascended to the Father, sometime between vs17 and 19. One of those places that God doesn't explain himself. But then, He can do just as He pleases, cant He? :-) God bless John |

505 | if you retain sins, you didnt forgive | John 20:23 | stjohn | 229996
Hi srpoet, Welcome to the forum! Here is something that I found in an older post that I hope will better your understanding of this verse. -John "To whom should we make a confession? According to Jesus’ promise every Christian believer can hear the confession of another (John 20:23). But will the other understand us? Might not another believer be so far beyond us in the Christian life that she or he would only turn away from us without understanding our personal sins? Whoever lives beneath the cross of Jesus, and as discerned in the cross of Jesus the utter ungodliness of all people and of their own hearts, will find there is no sin that can ever be unfamiliar. Whoever has once been appalled by the horror of their own sin, which nailed Jesus to the cross, will no longer be appalled by even the most serious sin of another Christian; rather they know the human heart from the cross of Jesus. Such persons know how totally lost is the human heart in sin and weakness, how it goes astray in the ways of sin -- and know too that this same heart is accepted in grace and mercy. Only another Christian who is under the cross can hear my confession. It is not experience with life but experience of the cross that makes one suited to hear confession. The most experienced judge of character knows infinitely less of the human heart than the simplest Christian who lives beneath the cross of Jesus. The greatest psychological insight, ability, and experience cannot comprehend this one thing: what sin is. Psychological wisdom knows what need and weakness and failure are, but it does not know the ugliness of the human being. And so it also does not know that human beings are ruined only by their sin and are healed only by forgiveness. The Christian alone knows this. In the presence of a psychologist I can only be sick; in the presence of another Christian I can be a sinner. The psychologist must first search my heart, and yet can never probe its innermost recesses. Another Christian recognizes just this: here comes a sinner like myself, a godless person who wants to confess and longs for God’s forgiveness. The psychologist views me as if there were no God. Another believer views me as I am before the judging and merciful God in the cross of Jesus Christ. When we are so pitiful and incapable of hearing the confession of one another, it is not due to a lack of psychological knowledge, but a lack of love for the crucified Jesus Christ." --Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) |

506 | if you retain sins, you didnt forgive | John 20:23 | stjohn | 229997
Hi srpoet, Here's more that I hope will help.-John "20:23 ..This verse does not give authority to Christians to forgive sins. Jesus was saying that the believer can boldly declare the certainty of a sinner's forgiveness by the Father because of the work of His Son if that sinner has repented and believed the gospel. The believer with certainty can also tell those who do not respond to the message of God's forgiveness through faith in Christ that their sins, as a result, are not forgiven." -- pg. 1627, The MacArthur Study Bible, copyright 1997 Word Publishing "20:23 Lit. "Those whose sins you forgive have already been forgiven; those whose sins you do not forgive have not been forgiven." God does not forgive people's sins because we do so, nor does He withhold forgiveness because we do. Rather, those who proclaim the gospel are in effect forgiving or not forgiving sins, depending on whether the hearers accept or reject Jesus Christ." -- pg. 1558, The Zondervan NASB Study Bible, copyright 1999 by the Zondervan Corporation |

508 | Help! Unclean vs clean meat? | Acts | stjohn | 204903
Hi LRP.... Welcome to the forum! Here are some Scriptures that I hope will ease your worries. I would suggest to go ahead and eat what you like. Acts 10:9 On the next day, as they were on their way and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray. v10 But he became hungry and was desiring to eat; but while they were making preparations, he fell into a trance; v11 and he *saw the sky opened up, and an object like a great sheet coming down, lowered by four corners to the ground, v12and there were in it all kinds of four-footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the air. v13 A voice came to him, "Get up, Peter, kill and eat!" v14 But Peter said, "By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy and unclean." v15 Again a voice came to him a second time, "What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy." v16 This happened three times, and immediately the object was taken up into the sky. I hpoe this helps Shalom and God bless John |

510 | Full of the Holy Spirit full time? | Acts 1:1 | stjohn | 204162
Hi Tamara: Scripture doesn't say explicitly that any were filled "all the time" but if any were, other then our Lord, I would say John the Baptizer. Luke 1:15 "For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother's womb. Shalom and God bless John |

511 | paul's three missionary journey | Acts 1:1 | stjohn | 213612
Dear po box... We don't really like do homework for people, it would be dishonest for us and for you as well. Not very Christlike at all don't you think? If you google "Messianic controversy" you can read something on your own about your first question, and you can learn the answer to the second by studying the Scriptures. Or you can Google that too, and see what you come up with. May the Lord bless you in your studies. John |

514 | Fellowship with God or man? | Acts 2:42 | stjohn | 196195
Oh My, Mrs, Dean! Please, I hope you jest when you say you might go with the LDS! It is obvious to us that groups like Hindi or Buddhism, are not Christian. That is what is so dangerous about the Mormons, and others like them, JW's for instance, they have the audacity to call themselves Christian! It's a lie! Their teaching is not Christian, they use the Bible, and say it's true, but, they add another book along with it that does not line up with Scripture. You may want to check out this website, http://www.blueletterbible.org/study/cults/exposem/index.html And keep looking, trust God to put you where He wants you. Remember, it's not a sin if you don't go to Church, except maybe if you do it to expressly forsake fellowship. You are very fortunate to have your spouse! Most of the time, I am alone except for God, but I seldom feel lonely, by the way. God bless John |

515 | how can Barnabas sell or possess land | Acts 4:36 | stjohn | 215356
Hi jbjona, Having no 'inheritance' does not necessarily mean they cannot own land. Here's some more info that may help explain how a Levite can own add sell land, especially in this 'new covenant' historical context. I hope this helps. John "Ver. 37. Having land, sold it,.... Whether this was in Cyprus, or in Judea, is not certain; nor how he came by it, whether he had bought it, as the priests and Levites might, and as Jeremiah, who was of the priests, bought a field at Anathoth, Jer 32:9 or, whether it was his wife's dowry; for the Levites had nothing by inheritance: they had forty two cities, and the six cities of refuge to dwell in, and the field of the suburbs of these cities; which field or land was never to be sold, but to be a perpetual possession, Le 25:34 but now the ceremonial law was abolished, and this precept was not attended to, if the land was of this sort." 516 | How can I get back the fire...? | Acts 8:39 | stjohn | 198942
Brother, that just shows that you still got a fire going, or you wouldn't be asking. You may not feel the same as you did when you first got born again, but that is just a feeling, and feelings fade. Sort of like falling in love; when we first meet our lover, we feel like a seem-roller can run us over and we can just bounce back up! But that fades, and that falling in love kind of love gets replaced with a more steady, willful, active, "choosing" to love, kind of love. A brother told me he had to put rocks in his pockets so he wouldn't float away! :-) But, well, that goes away my friend. I wish I knew how to keep on that high but alas I know not. Take heart, and keep on seeking Him! Its like a roller-coaster, sometimes trilling, sometimes kinda dull. But as long as we stay on the track, we'll do ok. Acts 8:39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch no longer saw him, but went on his way rejoicing. God bless John |

517 | Chronology of Paul | Acts 9:25 | stjohn | 183715
Hi Thomas; John Gill's Exposition of the Bible Galatians 1:18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem? Not three years after his return to Damascus, but after his conversion; and now it was that he moved to become a member of the church at Jerusalem; but they did not care to admit him, fearing that he was not a disciple, till such time that Barnabas took him, and brought him to the Apostles Peter and James, and related his conversion and his boldness in preaching the Gospel at Damascus: his view in going up to Jerusalem at this time was partly his own safety, being obliged to fly from Damascus, but chiefly to see Peter. stj |

518 | Are there any scriptures in the New Test | Acts 11:9 | stjohn | 196248
Hi melissanakley, Welcome, Here is Jesus answering those that were criticizing His despises. "Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated? "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. "These are the things which defile the man;" Matt 15:17-20a Also in Acts it talks about eating; Acts 11:5-10 "I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, an object coming down like a great sheet lowered by four corners from the sky; and it came right down to me, and when I had fixed my gaze on it and was observing it I saw the four-footed animals of the earth and the wild beasts and the crawling creatures and the birds of the air. "I also heard a voice saying to me, 'Get up, Peter; kill and eat.' "But I said, 'By no means, Lord, for nothing unholy or unclean has ever entered my mouth.' "But a voice from heaven answered a second time, 'What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy.' "This happened three times, and everything was drawn back up into the sky. So you see the Lord told Peter in no uncertain terms that it doesn't mater what we eat. Of corse, we must be reasonable. ;-) I hope this helps God bless John |

520 | Preching in Asia | Acts 16:6 | stjohn | 211392
Hi Nic: BradK gave you what I believe is about the best answer there is on this question; but since you ask again, maybe some commentary that says about the same thing, but exponds just a little, will suffice. John --"the reasons why it was prohibited to be preached here, at this time, cannot be said, and must be referred to the sovereign will of God; it seems, that at this instant, there were no chosen ones to be called by grace, and there was work for the apostle and his companions to do elsewhere, namely, in Macedonia."--John Gill http://eword.gospelcom.net/comments/acts/gill/acts16.htm |
