481 | many are called but only few are chosen | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 196089
Dear st, "many are called but only few are chosen" Does not imply that we don't have free will, that is, in order to answer a call one must make a choice to answer, or not to answer, it does imply, however, that few answer with sincerity of heart, therefor, few are chosen. God bless John |

482 | A prophet | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 196054
Hi Sister Azure, Interesting question; I think maybe they [the false prophets] were just doing what 'false' prophets do, attacking the true Word of God, and going with their own agenda. As to their status, it seems that most, if not all the prophets of God, in all times, faced great difficulty and persecution, from those that did not choose to believe the Word of God. Just my one cent ;-) God bless John |

483 | When I was a child.... | 1 Cor 13:11 | stjohn | 195987
Hi K James, Thats a good question, and I think that Paul was trying to guard against that very thing, that is, devisions in Christ's body. Today more then ever it seems, we should take the advice in 1 Cor, to heart, as we should all of scripture. God's holy word is just as relevant as ever, and the warnings there in should cut us to our marrow! We must be ever vigilant to search God's word to test all that is being taught, and not take the counsel of man, but of God. Make sure what we hear lines up with scripture, It is vital to our growth in Christ's body. John 15:20 "Remember the word that I said to you, 'A slave is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also. Rev 3:10 'Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. God bless John |

484 | When I was a child.... | 1 Cor 13:11 | stjohn | 195977
H K James, In chapter 12 we can see that there was strife in the church at Corinth, a contentious attitude toward each-other as to who had the best spiritual gifts. Read chapter 12 along with 13 and see if you can get a better understanding of what paul is saying. God bless John |

485 | when I was a child........I did away ... | 1 Cor 13:11 | stjohn | 195974
Hi K James I think Paul was simply saying to the Corinthians, in a nice way, to grow up and stop acting like chrildrin. God bless John |

486 | Why God killed boys for teasing Elisha | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 195933
Hi Beau, Understanding the character of God is, of the highest order in this case. God does NOT kill innocent children. It is my understanding that in the hebrew the word that is translated for children, actually is a term that means "young men" and you can be certain that they were accountable for their actions. In mocking God's prophet, they were actually, mocking God! Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. God bless John |

488 | Was Joseph involved in occult practices? | Gen 44:5 | stjohn | 195868
Hello JRM V 5. Is not this it in which my lord drinketh—not only kept for the governor's personal use, but whereby he divines. Divination by cups, to ascertain the course of futurity, was one of the prevalent superstitions of ancient Egypt, as it is of Eastern countries still. It is not likely that Joseph, a pious believer in the true God, would have addicted himself to this superstitious practice. But he might have availed himself of that popular notion to carry out the successful execution of his stratagem for the last decisive trial of his brethren. --Robert Jamieson God bless John |

490 | Phinehas and the plague | Num 25:4 | stjohn | 195794
Hi Cheri, Evidently they were the leaders that God had instructed Moses to execute, because, they were leading the people away from Israel, by following the way of "Baal of Peor." Num 25:4 The LORD said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel." 5 So Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you slay his men who have joined themselves to Baal of Peor." God bless John |

491 | Ecclesiastes, Matthew, NOW WHAT? | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 195770
Dear Bebop, Welcome. We cannot know for sure which Book is best for you to read first, but you say that you are happy so far, and I thank God that he is blessing you. After you have read Matthew though, you may want to simply go to Genesis and switch back and forth from the OT to the NT, it's a good way to see how the Bible (God's Word) gives us the big picture of God's message to us. Ask God to give you the wisdom of understanding, but don't expect to understand it all, Just hold tightly to what He does give you, like the precious gift that it is. May God bless you in your studies and open your eyes to the truth of His Holy Word. I hope there are others that also give you some advice on how to study the Bible. God bless John |

492 | Rev 20:10 | NT general | stjohn | 195762
Hello Wana... You have said, "I cannot serve that God." Would you serve a God that, put Himself between you and that kind of eternal torture? Would you serve a God that, put Himself on a Cross and suffered that wrath for you? Would you serve a God that, loves you so much, that He was beaten beyond recognition, and died for you, so that you could have the opportunity to live forever and not have to suffer that kind of torture? A God that, although He was without sin, absolutely not guilty of any transgression, was willing to suffer for your guilt, and payed the price of suffering that kind of torture in your place? Not because you deserve it, for there is no-one without sin, the Apostle Paul says in Rom 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." A free gift! Eternal life in Christ Jesus, is a FREE gift! It's your choice my friend, Death and Hell, eternal pain, torment, torture, with the devil who hates you,... or Life eternal with a God that loves you. You have to serve someone my friend, who is it going to be? By the way, this is the most important question, that you will ever be asked! And it's not an opinion, It's the truth of God's very word, and message to the lost world. The Good news is, Jesus suffered and died, in your place! Are you going to Love Him back, who loves you, or, love the devil, who hates you? God bless John |

493 | What is the spritiual implication here? | Eph 1:3 | stjohn | 195699
Hello poorinspirit, Welcome to the forum! Have a look at these verses in 1 Cor 12:27-30 , I think scripture speaks pretty clearly on this subject, "Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?" In these verses, Paul speaks clearly that not all have been given all the gifts/blessings, also implying that not all will. And, I believe, that we should not look at God's blessings as if they are at "our" disposal, but rather, "we" are at God's disposal. God, chooses Who gets what gifts, not us. We are empty vessels to be filled at His sovereign will. Know this my friend, that God will bless us with everything we will ever need, and more then we deserve. :-) God bless John |

494 | how do we keep demons away? | Matt 17:21 | stjohn | 195445

496 | Did Jesus have sexual desires? | Romans | stjohn | 195396
Hi cssmelser, Welcome to the forum. Jesus was a man, and just like any man, and, as the Bible teaches He was tempted in all things, so, I think we can assume that he did. As for circumcision, please read the following. Rom 4:6-13 just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: "BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED. "BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT." Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, "FAITH WAS CREDITED TO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS." How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised; and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised. For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. God bless John |

497 | What makes the difference in our faith? | Luke | stjohn | 195382
Hello Chuckie, Welcome. I don't know if we can say for sure, why Abraham, was given more faith then Zechariah, it's hard to see, if scripture really says so, and we don't know that much about him from his story in Luke 1:11-20. But only that God used him and his wife, Elizabeth, as a sign, if you please, that they would bring into the world a great prophet, v 16 "And he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God. In spite of his lack of faith, God still, in his sovereignty, used him. The enemies of our faith are, satin, his minions, and our own doubtful heart's. Hope this helps God bless John |

500 | How long is a scriptural generation | Mark 13:30 | stjohn | 195283
Hi rbradley.... Easton's Bible Dictionary GENERATION Genesis 2:4, "These are the generations," means the "history." 5:1, "The book of the generations," means a family register, or history of Adam. 37:2, "The generations of Jacob" the history of Jacob and his descendants. 7:1, "In this generation" in this age. Psalms 49:19, "The generation of his fathers" the dwelling of his fathers, i.e., the grave. Psalms 73:15, "The generation of thy children" the contemporary race. Isaiah 53:8, "Who shall declare his generation?" His manner of life who shall declare? or rather His race, posterity, shall be so numerous that no one shall be able to declare it. In Matthew 1:17, the word means a succession or series of persons from the same stock. Matthew 3:7, "Generation of vipers" brood of vipers. 24:34, "This generation" the persons then living contemporary with Christ. 1 Peter 2:9, "A chosen generation" a chosen people. The Hebrews seem to have reckoned time by the generation. In the time of Abraham a generation was an hundred years, thus: Genesis 15:16, "In the fourth generation" in four hundred years (comp. verse 13 and Exodus 12:40). In Deuteronomy 1:35 and 2:14 a generation is a period of thirty-eight years. Hope this helps God bless John |
