41 | The league must be broken | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 216495
Greetings St John! Good post! When Festus said "Paul, your great learning is driving you mad!" (Acts 26:24), I am sure that Paul was not too offended in regards to his education, especially in light of Philippians 3:7-8: Phil 3:7 But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Phil 3:8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, Blessings to you, Makarios |

43 | Call from God! | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 217354
Greetings Grace7044, A "call from God" could be defined as a calling towards a specific function within the church or even a specific vocation such as ministry. For Scriptural examples of 'being called': * Call to ministry - Genesis 12:1, Exodus 3:2-10, Numbers 27:18-23, Deut. 31:23, Josh. 1:1-9, 4:1-16, Judges 6:11-14, 1 Kings 16:19, Isaiah 6:8-10, Acts 26:16 * Child's call - 1 Sam. 3:4-10 (Amplified) * God's chosen ministers - Psalm 65:4 * Rejecting God's call - Psalm 81:11, Isaiah 65:12, Jeremiah 7:13, Jonah 1:1-2 * Called before birth - Isaiah 49:1, Jeremiah 1:4-10 * Selecting priests, Levites - Isaiah 66:21 * Those not called - Jeremiah 23:21 * Specific call - Ezekiel 1:3 * Shepherd called to preach - Amos 7:14-15 (CEV) * Donkey chosen to serve - Matt. 21:2-3 * Calling of disciples - Mark 1:16-20, 2:13-17 * Macedonian vision - Acts 16:9-10 * Relation between call, ability - Romans 11:29 * Apostolic credentials - Galatians 1:1,15-17 * "Upward call" - Philippians 3:14 * Christ Himself ordained for service - Heb. 5:4-6 * Chosen of the Lord - 1 Tim. 1:12 * Saved, called - 2 Tim. 1:9 * "Confirm your call" - 2 Peter 1:10 (NRSV) Other related topics include "ministry" or "vision." 44 | Call from God! | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 217374
Greetings Doc, Absolutely right! We certainly would not want to lose sight of the general calling of salvation (Matthew 22:14) to those who are chosen (Acts 2:39; Romans 11:28-29; 1 Cor. 1:26; Heb. 9:15) to be the elect, especially with John Calvin's 500th Birthday happening on July 10th. :-) I noticed that Grace7044 had included in her profile that she is a pianist in her church; therefore, the thrust of my response to her question of "calling" was based on an 'outward' vocational or gifts emphasis rather than an 'inward' or salvic emphasis in which we "give careful thought to your ways" (Haggai 1:5,7, 2:15,18 [NIV]). Therefore, I had assumed that a vocational meaning was intended here, not a basic implication of salvation, as she is already active in service. But you are correct in pointing out that the importance of the 'calling of salvation' cannot be dismissed in any discussion of 'calling,' even if that was never the intent of the original Question or of the Answer given. There is indeed a deeper meaning to the inward sense of calling as opposed to that of vocation: "That man is out of reach of harm in this life, who is sure of possessing heaven in the next. This is the portion of every believer." Samuel Willard (1640-1707). 2 Peter 1:10 emphasizes the importance of salvation and it is good to revisit that verse in light of this discussion of 'calling,' since a calling towards any ministry would require that one have that initial calling of salvation. "The more purely God's word is preached, the more deeply it pierces and the more kindly it works." William Gouge (1575-1653) Blessings to you, Makarios |

46 | how does one elevate their mind? | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 217446
Greetings Mizzie Blue! You ask: "How does one elevate their mind?" Answer: Colossians 3:2; Romans 12:2 Colossians 3:2 "Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth." Romans 12:2 "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." 47 | Call from God! | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 217485
Greetings Searcher56! According to http://www.puritanboard.com/f18/francis-roberts-22125/, "Francis Roberts, English Puritan (1609 - 1675) was a Presbyterian minister who conformed at the Restoration. He published a metrical version of the Psalms (1644) and is most famous for his "1750-page magnum opus on the covenants (The Mystery and Marrow of the Bible: viz. God’s Covenants with Man, 1657)," a copy of which exists at PTRS's Puritan Resource Center (1). For a recent study of his theology, see Won Taek Lim, The Covenant Theology of Francis Roberts (2007)." (posted by VirginiaHuguenot) Therefore, Doc is correct in pointing out that there was a fellow named Francis Roberts who lived during Puritan times. The fact that Mike mentioned his grandmother is quite possibly just a misunderstanding between Doc and Mike, and only clarification (and not an apology) would be needed to bring a more constructive approach to the dialogue. 50 | Sodom rebuilt again? EZEKIEL 16:53-55 | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 217962
Greetings Unction! You ask if Ezekiel 16:53-55 states that Sodom will be rebuilt.. The best way to look at this section of scripture is as a comparison of Judah to Samaria and Sodom: "16:46-59 Judah is compared to Samaria and Sodom, whose judgment for sin was great. Judah was more corrupt (v. 47), multiplied Samaria's and Sodom's sin (v. 51), and committed more abominable sin (v. 52)." (1) "16:53-59 As Jerusalem had arrogantly poked fun at Sodom, so Jerusalem would be despised by Syria and Philistia. Although restoration was promised, the people still had to pay for their sins by living in exile. This punishment was consistent with God's past and persistent promises to repay disobedience with specific curses (see 4:16, 17; 5:8-17). .." (2) "bring again . . . captivity—that is, change the affliction into prosperity (so Job 42:10). Sodom itself was not so restored (Jer 20:16), but Ammon and Moab (her representatives, as sprung from Lot who dwelt in Sodom) were (Jer 48:47,49:6); probably most of the ten tribes and the adjoining nations, Ammon and Moab, were in part restored under Cyrus but the full realization of the restoration is yet future the heathen nations to be brought to Christ being typified by "Sodom," whose sins they now reproduce (De 32:32)." (3) "captivity of thy captives—literally, "of thy captivities." However, the gracious promise rather begins with the "nevertheless" (Eze 16:60), not here; for Eze 16:59 is a threat, not a promise. The sense here thus is, Thou shalt be restored when Sodom and Samaria are, but not till then (Eze 16:55), that is, never. This applies to the guilty who should be utterly destroyed (Eze 16:41,42); but it does not contradict the subsequent promise of restoration to their posterity (Nu 14:29-33), and to the elect remnant of grace [CALVIN]." (3) John Calvin and John Wesley both agree that Sodom was not restored or to be restored. "Ezekiel 16:53: When - Sodom and Samaria never were restored to that state they had been in; nor were the two tribes ever made so rich, mighty, and renowned, though God brought some of them out of Babylon: the words confirm an irrecoverably low, and despised state, of the Jews in their temporals. Then - Then, not before." 51 | Visualizatin vs the bible | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 218441
Greetings Macsdawtr, You ask, "Does using visualization techniques conflict with the teachings of the bible?" I would say that there is no conflict as long as you are basing your techniques on scripture alone. As long as the teaching is based on nothing (no conjecture, false teaching, tradition) but scripture alone, then I would see no conflict in such a presentation. Blessings to you, Makarios |

52 | How old is the bible? | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 218918
Greetings Miss Silver, You ask, "How old is the Bible?" The Book of Genesis is most generally acclaimed to be the first book of the Bible that God had given inspiration to be transcribed, and the human authorship for this book is most generally accredited to Moses, at a generally agreed upon date of around 1450-1410 B.C. Blessings to you, Makarios |

55 | Aren't there differences? | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 220137
Greetings MAC702, There are a number of specific "hot topic" verses when discussing women in ministry, including 1 Cor. 14:34 (keep silent), 1 Peter 3:7 (weaker), and, in my opinion, 1 Cor. 12:11 (Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to each one individually as He wills). As for 1 Cor. 14:34, if you believe that this verse exposits a biblical prohibition against women in ministry, then the most stolid line of thinking for this interpretation is rooted in the biblical definition of family, marriage and the order of creation after Adam and Eve. On the other hand, if you believe that this verse would best be interpreted in a 1st century cultural sense that is not applicable universally and for all time, then your line of thinking almost certainly would stem from Galatians 3:28 and possibly 1 Cor. 12:11. As for 1 Peter 3:7, the "weaker" element spoken of in relation to women would almost certainly be speaking of 'weaker physically' since such verses as Gal. 3:28 indicate that women are definitely equal in a spiritual capacity to men. So, that leaves us with 1 Cor. 12:11 and how the Holy Spirit apportions spiritual gifts to each and every believer. If preaching/teaching is a spiritual gift (Ephesians 4:11), then does the Holy Spirit check gender before He "apportions to each one individually as he wills"? I would not presume that the Holy Spirit would necessarily limit the gift of preaching/teaching to men alone. Blessings to you, Makarios |

58 | Aren't there differences? | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 220162
Greetings Justme! Thank you - hopefully I have shown that there is more than one way to look at what has proven to be a complex and contentious topic in scripture with no shortage of opinions. The best way that I have found is to honestly examine what the whole of scripture says while taking a balanced and constructive look at what the Bible is teaching. It is easy to stonewall behind a verse or two, but it is harder (and many times more educational) to examine just why the "opposing" point of view finds it so difficult to finally "be convinced." Blessings to you, Makarios |
