44 | How do you help a controlling person? | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 229092
Hi - your question is too broad. If you will describe the bible study focus of the question we can start there and maybe be helpful.
45 | baptizem | Rom 10:5 | jlhetrick | 226146
The Message of Salvation to All 5 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. 6 But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 or “ ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” (Romans 10: 5-11, ESV) It's not a formula and there are no required rituals, including baptism. If your father accepted Christ in accordance with the saving faith described in Scripture he is with the Lord |

46 | will suiside send you to hell | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 226117
While your question may be appropriate in that you are specifically asking for what the bible says on the topic, it would be highly inappropriate and potentially dangerous for anyone here to offer opinion and personal thought on this issue. On all matters, and especially that of life and death and the eternal condition of one’s soul, we do best to stop where Scripture stops. In fact, Scripture demands that we do. In other words, we shouldn’t attempt to offer more than what Scripture has to say about it. I would like to offer the below quote from theologian Charles Hodge for your consideration. “It is conceivable that men who do not believe in God or in a future state of existence, should think it allowable to take refuge in annihilation from the miseries of this life. But it is unaccountable, except on the assumption of temporary or permanent insanity, that any man should rush uncalled into the retributions of eternity. Suicide, therefore, is most frequent among those who have lost all faith in religion.3 It is a very complicated crime; our life is not our own; we have no more right to destroy our life than we have to destroy the life of a fellow-man. Suicide is, therefore, self murder. It is the desertion of the post which God has assigned us; it is a deliberate refusal to submit to his will; it is a crime which admits of no repentance, and consequently involves the loss of the soul.” (Charles Hodge, Systematic Theology). “Our life is not our own”. Murdering one’s self is the same as murdering another human being. It is a violation of God’s law as well as secular law. I can’t be sure but I believe the last sentence in the above quote by Hodge is speaking of an unsaved person regarding the suicide leaving no opportunity for repentance resulting in the loss of the soul. There is only one unforgiveable sin; blasphemy of the Holy Ghost, Matthew 12:31. Referring back to Charles Hodge, and to support my assumption that he is referring to an unsaved person in the above quote, Mr. Hodge does acknowledge blasphemy against the Holy Ghost as THE unpardonable sin. If you are not familiar with this sin, blasphemy of the Holy Ghost, do a search of the topic here on the SBF Forum. Your examination there is likely to bring you to the understanding that this unpardonable sin can not be committed by a saved person. All other sins carry the penalty of death as well, but to the saved, that penalty has been paid in full by the finished work of Christ Jesus through his death on the cross and resurrection from the dead. |

48 | What happen when we confess our sin? | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 220599
Welcome to the Forum! These questions are difficult or impossible to answer regarding specific individuals and specific events. You might get a wide range of responses. You might gain some insight by taking a look at 1Chronicles chapter 21. In this passage David sins against God. He realizes his sin and ask forgiveness. He also, in verse 8, asks God to "take away the iniquity". I pointed to this bible reference because it helps illustrate that sin has consequences. Even though forgiven, the consequences of sin are likely to remain. One consequence of your lie is that you feel badly about it (guilty feelings). I might suggest that this is a good thing. What would be the value of lieing, asking forgiveness and then carrying on with no consequences to learn from? Still, our faith is not based on feelings; it is based on the truth of God's word. Be confident that God has forgiven you, accept the lesson based in part on how you feel about it, but don't allow your feelings about it to continue to convict you of what has been forgiven 1John 1:9 |

50 | Dialogue with KJV only person? | 2 Tim 3:16 | jlhetrick | 215817
Personally I don't believe you should attempt a dialogue and nor should you allow someone to "rope you in" to such a discussion. You might suggest that the two of you spend time studying the bible instead of arguing over the translations and see if he/she will bite. You might even agree to do the study using the KJV and not let it be an issue. As for the suggestion that the NASB was translated by evil people, well, I wouldn't even honor that with a response of any kind. |

52 | scripture on trials we keep serving God | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 215536
Perhaps the best, single passage to point to would be Luke 22:41-44 "And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, 42 saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done." 43 Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground." (NASB) Every thought should be captive to the obedience of Christ (2Corinthians 10:5). Scripture clearly teaches that serving God (which can be summed up in the single word “obedience”) is to be a constant, consistent thing. Of course we don’t find obedience, our responsibility to serve God, as something that is separated out for specific periods and/or based on what we are experiencing (such as trials/temptation). In John 14:23 Jesus said that “If anyone loves Me, he will KEEP My word…(NASB, emphasis added). Suffering (trials) teaches obedience (Hebrews 5:8). These are just some points to get you started. The answer to your question really is found throughout the whole of Scripture. Hope this is helpful. |

54 | is this the work of the devil or cults? | NT general | jlhetrick | 215381
Hello- actually, the bible speaks plenty about mental health. And yes, the mental health is directly related to one's spiritual condition. Double-minded equals narcissism? NO! Narcissism would be more related to sinful vanity. Being double minded involves a self-centered approach no doubt; but it speaks more specifically to wavering, doubting... on again of again... perhaps seeking to do good while chasing after the desires of the flesh. In essence, it might well be summed up as chronic disobedience. Jeff |

55 | weeping | Revelation | jlhetrick | 215287
Known- welcome to the forum. Here is a start and possibly the best answer you will receive... (I can say that because it's a quote and not my own answer :-). "The proper state of mind for appreciating this chapter is that when we look on the future and are sensible that important events are about to occur; when we feel that that future is wholly impenetrable to us; and when the efforts of the highest created minds fail to lift the mysterious veil which hides those events from our view. It is in accordance with our nature that the mind should be impressed with solemn awe under such circumstances; it is not a violation of the laws of our nature that one who had an earnest desire to penetrate that future, and who saw the volume before him which contained the mysterious revelation, and who yet felt that there was no one in heaven or earth who could break the seals, and disclose what was to come, should weep." (Barnes' Notes on the New Testament Explanatory and Practical.) Jeff |

56 | Divine intervention? | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 214781
Or maybe it was non-intervention? If I were to rob a bank and deposit the money in another bank account and by doing I had financial wealth would I say that it was by divine intervention that I'm rich? Be careful in how you attempt to apply principles from Scripture. To reiterate brother Tim... stewardship does apply to the all things, both spiritual and material. This is a very clear teaching as Tim pointed out with reference. If you won a bet then you also ran the risk of losing the bet. If you would have lost, what exactly would you have lost? (don't answer here, just for your own thought). Did God intervene to cause the other person to lose? Certainly there is nothing outside of His control. But does He intervene to cause the outcome of every event? If two teams are playing against each other how many players and fans do you think might pray for their team to win? Yet, only one team does win (a draw being the exception of course). Does He cause one team to win and one to lose or does He allow the outcome? So if God's word clearly teaches that we are to be "good stewards" are you violating this principle by entering into bets? If you answer yes (which is the right answer) then what might you expect from God were He to actually intervene? Hebrews 12:5-7 (ESV) 5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? |

57 | Does science vs Bible annoy anyone else? | Ps 14:1 | jlhetrick | 213646
Brother Hank gave an excellent answer. For me though, I do not yet have the emotional and mental maturity and so, I am still often annoyed by this. In addition, I find I am also annoyed by those who try to use science to PROVE the word of God IS true. As if the word of God needs or depends on science to prove it. In reference to the creation account in Genesis 1, a day is represented in the text as referring to a day as we understand it…. “there was evening and there was morning, one day.” (Chapter 1, verse 5). The Scriptural account of creation is NOT the same (much less verbatim) of the scientific “big bang” theory. Keep in mind that the true history is not one of “nothingness to existence”. It is actually the account of the uncaused cause (God) creating from His will and with very specific intent. There was not a period of “billions of our years” in which the “life in the seas” resulting in the “life on land”. The text is clear on that. |

60 | Sell what you have-give alms | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 212230
flyman- alms speaks to charity, or charitable giving. The verse has to be considered in the context of the surrounding verses. Jesus is not saying sell all of your possessions, leaving yourself without means of living and giving it all away. The verse and the passage is speaking of the spiritual attitude, the mind-set of Christian living. Having more than enough while someone else doesn’t have enough is part of the issue. Worrying about getting more and keeping what we have is another part of the issue. We are to trust God for what we need and not become “self-reliant” which is nothing more than a mind-set because we actually could never be self-reliant. We have because He gives. Giving responsibly is a responsibility all Christians have. The loving others is the basis for why and how we give. Much more can be said but I’m only on a short break at work. Jeff |
