161 | husband initiate | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 189561
Hello Lorinda and welcome to the forum! You might be more specific as to what you mean by "the husband initiate for the family". If I'm guessing right about your question you might refer to the following few verses and then consider them and study them within the context that they occur. Of course, this is only a few examples of what I believe you may be looking for. Genesis 3:16 1Corinthians 11:3 Ephesians 5:23 Hope this was helpful for a start. Jeff |

162 | I have read one verse | Job | jlhetrick | 189557
Dear Blessed- Welcome to the forum! You may be thinking of the following passage. Ro 2:1-4 NASB95 Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? Hope this was helpful. God bless, Jeff |

164 | is it a sin to go outside ur race? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 189171
Hello leapordgirl13, Welcome, but please respond to sister Azure. Are you of appropriate age - 18 or older - to be participating on this forum? Regarding your question, there is no place in Scripture that prohibits interracial marriage. The matter is one of marrying within a "people" not a race. That is, a child of God is FORBIDEN to marry a nonbeliever. 2 Co 6:14-15 NASB 14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? There are times when a believer will ignore or disobey this command of God with the idea; "I will change him (or her) and lead him to Christ". Wrong; if he (or she) is to come to Christ it will be God who calls and does the leading. It should be said that it is a different situation if one is already married and then becomes a Christian while his or her spouse is not saved. That person should stay married; God hates divorce. 1 Co 7:13-16 NASB 13 And a woman who has an unbelieving husband and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy. 15 Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace. 16 For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife? Hope this is helpful, God bless, Jeff |

165 | how is .... | Mark 1:1 | jlhetrick | 188825
Harper, Please see humbledbyhisgrace's post 188823 and my response to him. He corrected me on a very important point. Forgive my misstatement on this important issue. I stated that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the third person of the Trinity. Scripture presents Him clearly as the Second person of the Trinity, not the third. thanks again Steve for clarifying that. Jeff |

166 | how is .... | Mark 1:1 | jlhetrick | 188818
Harper- Scripture tells us that John’s baptism was a baptism of “repentance”. Mt 3:1-2 NASB95 Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, “REPENT, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (emphasis added) Lk 3:2-3 NASB95 in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. And he came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins; God bless, Jeff |

167 | how is .... | Mark 1:1 | jlhetrick | 188817
Hello again Harper! To get started with your questions I’ll offer some brief input. Others will no doubt give additional response. To start- the “Son of God” title denotes the divinity of Christ. Christ is the “third person” of the triune God. I don’t want to make any assumptions about what you do and do not understand regarding God’s word. I’ll keep this one short with a copy and paste. If this is too basic please let me know. “Trinity — a word not found in Scripture, but used to express the doctrine of the unity of God as subsisting in three distinct Persons. This word is derived from the Gr. trias, first used by Theophilus (A.D. 168-183), or from the Lat. trinitas, first used by Tertullian (A.D. 220), to express this doctrine. The propositions involved in the doctrine are these: 1. That God is one, and that there is but one God (Deut. 6:4; 1 Kings 8:60; Isa. 44:6; Mark 12:29, 32; John 10:30). 2. That the Father is a distinct divine Person (hypostasis, subsistentia, persona, suppositum intellectuale), distinct from the Son and the Holy Spirit. 3. That Jesus Christ was truly God, and yet was a Person distinct from the Father and the Holy Spirit. 4. That the Holy Spirit is also a distinct divine Person.” (Easton's Bible dictionary) This definition by Easton's Bible dictionary with the included Scripture references should be a bit to chew on if you are not already very familiar with this. God bless, Jeff |

Hello again Harper, First things first; please accept this as my attempt to be helpful and not punitive or argumentative. First, once the original question is asked and received a response a “Thread” has begun. Please tag all additional posts as a “Note”. That way the dialogue continues in the single “Thread”. Otherwise, if you tag your next response as a “Question” it shows up at the top of the Home Page and stands alone – it is no longer a part of the ongoing thread. In other words, your response can actually be a question but hit the radio button for “Note” so it stays with the ongoing conversation. Finally, please limit a single post to manageable parts. Your question I am responding too is actually five questions, each of which might be expanded on in some detail. Again friend, please take this as helpful. We each had to become adjusted to the format when we first began to participate. God bless, and answers will be forthcoming, Jeff |

171 | Does the soul cease to exist at death? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 188586
Hello LeRoyce, A quick note on posting first. Once a question has been asked and a dialogue begins, chose "Note" for all other posts you make in that thread (even if your continuing to ask questions). If you choose to tag it as a "question" it will begin a new thread and be hard for others to follow. Regarding your question; "does the soul cease to exist at death" the answer is no. You reference Ecc 9 so let's look at it. "But all this I laid to heart, examining it all, how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God..." Ecc 9:1 ESV The sovereignty of God is the focus here and the truth that all people die regardless of their deeds. While we can be sure that we will someday die physically, we cannot be sure what each day brings. Death is certain, but life is not. What will happen tomorrow only God knows. 8:14- "There is a vanity that takes place on earth..." Man cannot know God's ways. Things happen to the righteous that we would expect to happen to the wicked and to the wicked that we would expect to happen to the righteous. We can't know the reasons for these things because they are beyond our understanding. We can't see into the future and we don't know the details of God's plan. What we do know is that no matter how things play out here on earth, whether or not this one or that one is shown favor (as we perceive it in our thinking) each one will die (Heb 9:27). We cannot misinterpret this as meaning that the "soul" will die because Scripture will not allow for it. Heb 9:27 not only says that each person will die, but goes on to say "after that comes judgment". Verse 28 says Christ will appear to save those who "are eagerly waiting for him." So the wisdom of Solomon and the rest of Scripture is that our hope is not in this life; what we perceive as blessings; nor should we be discouraged when things aren't going our way. Our hope is knowing that if we belong to Christ, death holds no power over us (Heb 2:14) Hope this is helpful, Jeff |

174 | Holy Spirit - indwelling / infilling | Acts 2:38 | jlhetrick | 188247
Hello Cheri, I’m not sure I follow you regarding the “asking for it” part of your question regarding the “filling” of the Holy Spirit. To my knowledge, there is no place in Scripture where we are commanded or told to ask, or pray for the filling (or infilling as you put it) of the Spirit. I have heard this in certain denominational teachings though- “ask/pray for the Spirit” but I don’t find that in the bible. What we do know is that every believer is “sealed” with the Spirit 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 (ESV) 21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. It is a one-time event that happens at the moment of conversion and is never repeated. John 14:16 (ESV) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, 5 to be with you forever, Notice the Lord promises that the Helper (Holy Spirit) once given, will be “with you forever”. So I’m assuming that this is what you are meaning by “indwelling”. 2Timothy 1:14 (ESV) 14 By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you. My understanding is that the “filling” of the Spirit is something quite different as well as something that is repeated during the life and ministry of believers. Eph 5:18 ESV 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, This is a command – “be filled with the Spirit,…” 1 Co 3:1 ESV But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, 3 for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? My understanding here is that Paul is not able to address them as “spiritual people” not because they do not have the Spirit. They do, they are believers as indicated by Paul addressing them as “the church” in the introduction of the letter and as "infants in Christ" in the above quoted passage. Paul could not address them as spiritual because they were not being “controlled” by the Spirit. As in Eph 5:18 the warning was to not get “drunk with wine” (that is, controlled/altered by it) these believers in 1 Cor. were being controlled by the flesh; that is “jealousy” “strife”. Another example of what I am referring to as the “filling” of the Spirit is Mt 10:19 ESV 19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. I have always been amazed by the passage in Matthew 10. Hope this helps, Jeff |

175 | once saved always saved | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 188184
Eric, The question that seems obvious to me in light of Scripture is, were you once saved? 1 Cor 1:9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. ESV 1 Thess 5:23-24 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. ESV God bless, Jeff |

176 | Is It Human to Sin? | Gen 1:27 | jlhetrick | 188089
Lookn, You have contributed some very questionable posts to the Forum since your registering as a member. Like others, I'm not quite sure how to receive your questions. At times I have the sense that you are trying to create a pot to stir for your own joy of watching it swirl. At other times I wonder if you might be posting illegally (as in not meeting the age requirements –at least 18 yoa). In either case or something very different please allow me to offer a bit of advice. If you are sitting under the teachings of a preacher that believes that as Christians “we sin all the time” and then minimizes or excuses that with something as ridiculous as “we’re only human” you need to very seriously consider finding a church where the pastor uses Scripture for the basis of his messages. Really, consider whether you’re in the right place. Jeff |

Hello nobody, your somebody. Welcome to the forum :) Acts 5:27-29 (ESV) 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, 28 saying, "We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us." 29 But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men. 178 | What qualifies a cultist? | Is 43:7 | jlhetrick | 187610
Psalm 25, Good observation. I too could list a significant percentage of the preachers on "Christian tv" as cultist. Perhapse more than half. Any misrepresentation of truth will qualify the label. I wonder how much farther YOU allow for. Two misrepresentations, three, or maybe four? Not sure; at what level of misrepresentation does one become guilty? Matt 12:30 ESV 30 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. Pretty clearly stated don't you agree, Jeff |

179 | 2 bothersome questions | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 187467
Hello sk..., To my knowledge there is no known record of the "custom" beyond that listed there and in parallels. Therefore, unless I am wrong, we're in agreement with the historians and bible scholars. That is, we don't know. As for the question about lawfulness of execution I have always understood that the Jews lost the power to execute after coming under the control of the Roman Empire. The law in Lev. has nothing to do with it. Having lost their sovereignty as a nation, that ruling over them (Rome) would no doubt dictate what rules and laws the people could enforce on their own discretion. My limited understanding of the Roman Empire is that only the Emperor had the "power of life and death". Any other, such as soldiers, governors, etc. (including Pilate) would have only acted by the authority of the Emperor. Maybe others can help here. I would certainly not point to the account in John 8 where the argument was being made to Christ that the adulteress should be stoned as suggesting a contradiction. First- she was not stoned (if there are other examples during the time of Roman rule where the practice of stoning to death was used by the Jews please point out). Second- the context shows us here that the Scribes and Pharisees cared nothing about the sin of this woman nor the law. Their intent was to trap and manipulate the Lord. What they found (as should we)was that the higher calling of God to love and not judge as well as forgiveness trumped both the spirit in which the scribes and Pharisees wished to use the law of Moses, and the law of Rome. Context is as important as the words we read. Without it the words have no real meaning. I appreciate your approach that if there seems to be a contradiction it is you that is "at fault" and "missing something". Good job on that. With that type of attitude you will be free to study and learn without being fooled by your own limitations. God bless, Jeff |

Hello One, Welcome to the Forum! John 10:25-30 ESV The works that I do in my Father's name bear witness about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not part of my flock. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one."
