41 | just wondering what salt refers to. | Mark 9:50 | Ocelot | 164902
Here are just a few of thoughts. First, salt is a preservative. Salt also helps things heal. Third, salt flavors things. How could these things apply to the Christian Life? The ultimate preservation would be to lead people to The Way, The Truth and The Life. Salt heals. We should always be open and watchful for ways to help to bare others burdens. And salt flavors things. We, as Christians should be joyful, kind and loving people. People that make life more joyful for others. Those are just some thoughts.
42 | did this woman know about jesus death? | Mark 14:8 | Ocelot | 168200
Hello stmichael, and welcome to the forum. My answer would be first, if Jesus said that that was what she was doing, then that’s what she was doing. He had been telling His disciples all along that His mission was not one of conquest, but one of sacrifice. But for some reason they just couldn’t seem to get it. It could be that this woman simply listened, and heard, the words the Jesus was saying. Matthew 20:18, 19 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, and will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and scourge and crucify Him, and on the third day He will be raised up." 44 | child made during adultry | John 3:16 | Ocelot | 166634
God is Love. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” For God so loved [The Child conceived in adultery] that He gave His only begotten Son. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. Here’s a question for you. Can you choose to whom you are born? Of course not. God is a God of love. He understands us completely. To the child that was conceived in adultery I would say this; know that God loves you just as much as anyone else. He loved you so much that He would rather DIE than live without you. And He did. 47 | follow up - noah | Rom 3:23 | Ocelot | 170537
Hello Hic, To be blameless, perfect or holy does not mean that we posses those traits by nature. Nor does it mean that Noah attained perfection or blamelessness of his own ability. The Bible says in Philippians 2:13 “for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” Ocelot |

49 | Unable to speak in tongues. Why? | 1 Cor 14:19 | Ocelot | 197313
Dear jesus1km, I would point you to 1 Corinthians chapter 12. Also, prayerfully read chapter 14. Here are a couple of passages from those chapters that balance out the “tongues” issue. 1 Corinthians 12:28-30 “And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? But earnestly desire the greater gifts…” First of all, did you notice that “tongues” is last on the list of spiritual gifts that God has appointed? Secondly, the last portion of the passage makes it clear that God does not give everyone the same gifts. If He did, you’d have an unbalanced church. In 1 Corinthians 14:19 Paul says “…in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.” If you are going to a church that teaches that you don’t have the Holy Spirit unless you speak in tongues, you’re attending an unbalanced church (at best). You would be of much greater value to your church if you spoke five words that everyone could understand, that would instruct people spiritually, than ten thousand mumbled ramblings. I hope this helps. Ocelot |

50 | how will i be known to others in heaven? | 1 Cor 15:53 | Ocelot | 167270
Hello kfoale. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:53, 54 “For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory.” The Bible says that we will “put on the imperishable” and “immortality”. It doesn’t say that we’ll be totally different people. I believe that we will look like ourselves, only we’ll look as God originally intended us to look. All of our imperfections will be gone. We’ll still be the same people, we’ll just be perfect. Those are my thoughts. Ocelot |

51 | Mark, am I missing something | Galatians | Ocelot | 165324
We are not under the Law, but under Grace. Shall we sin because we are not under the law, but under grace? Read Romans chapter 6. We are not under the PENALTY of the Law. Christ did not die on the cross so that we could murder, lie and cheat on our spouses. We can not earn salvation by keeping the law. But we certainly can lose it by willfuly breaking the law. (2 Pet. 2:20,22;1 Cor. 9:27; Jer. 18:7-11;1 Cor. 15:1,2;)Read also Matthew chapter 5:17-19. When it seems that the Bible contradicts itself, assume that you’ve misinterpreted it. The evidence in favor of the Law, and yes, even the Sabbath is massive in weight. The evidence against it is circumstantial at best. Truth is like fence posts. If we base our beliefs on one misapplied text, we can line it up to make the Bible say just about anything we want. But when we find many texts that go against our one or two texts, we should assume we’ve misinterpreted the text. Weigh the evidence. Listen to your sister. Read the word. The word is the only rule by which we should base our beliefs. We should not base them on tradition. With Christian Love Ocelot |

52 | Are grace and salvation the same? | Eph 2:8 | Ocelot | 170960
Hello NeffyM, and welcome to the forum. Salvation is the act of being saved. According to Webster, salvation is “deliverance from the power and effects of sin”. Grace is the means by which salvation comes. Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;” You asked “What is the difference between being saved by grace and salvation for christians?” The answers is, there is no difference. Salvation IS being saved by grace. Secondly, you asked “Where in the bible would I be able to find the meaning of being saved by grace and salvation.” Ephesians 1:7 “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace” So grace is redemption and forgiveness of trespasses. Grace is by nature a free gift. Lastly you asked “Can one be independent of the other?” My answer would be a hesitant “yes”. It would seem that grace is offered to all (John 3:16) but it is not accepted by most and therefore salvation is not given to most. (Matthew 7:13) I hope this answers your question. Ocelot |

54 | secular music vs christian music | Phil 4:8 | Ocelot | 166487
Here are a few verses that come to mind Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. 1 John 2:15-17 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever. Ocelot |

55 | Show me the money | Phil 4:19 | Ocelot | 171940
Hopefully I didn’t misunderstand you. If you’re speaking of spiritual abundance, then yes, Christ says “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” John 10:10 But if you’re speaking of material abundance, then the Bible also speaks about that: Luke 9:23 And He was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” Matthew 19:21 Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." Matthew 6:19-21 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Hebrews 13:5 Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, "I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU," Ocelot |

56 | ... | 2 Thess 2:15 | Ocelot | 170907
I wonder what glowing words Christ had for tradition? Matthew 15:3 And He answered and said to them, "Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?" Matt 15:6 "...And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition." Mark 7:8 "Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men." Mark 7:9 He was also saying to them, "You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. Mark 7:13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that." That's all I could find. Ocelot |

57 | Ephs 4:30; 1:13-14 | 2 Tim 1:12 | Ocelot | 165781
Here are some verses that speak to the “Once saved always saved” doctrine 2 Pet 2:19 promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved. 2 Pet 2:20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. Heb 3:12 Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. Heb 3:13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Heb 3:14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end, Matt 24:13 "But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved. 1 Cor 15:1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 1 Cor 15:2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. Rev 3:5 'He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. 1 Cor 9:27 but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified. Not to dishearten anyone. But salvation CAN BE lost. Sin separates us from salvation. God’s grace reunites us with it. Does that mean that God stops loving those who fall into sin? No. God’s love and His grace are two different things. We can’t stop God from loving us. But we CAN reject His grace. With Christian Love Ocelot |

58 | How do you guys fight temptation? | James 5:16 | Ocelot | 165729
Here are some verses that come to mind. James 4:7 Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you Matt 4:4 But He answered and said, "It is written…” Instilling God’s word in our hearts, and especially verses that pertain to weaknesses we have in particular, can be a good way to resist temptation. Rom 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. I remember reading about a boy who came home and found his mother waiting for him at the door. She asked him “I know you went swimming even though I told you not to.” The boy replied “I was tempted to do it. I’m sorry.” The boy’s mother reached into his backpack and pulled out his swimming shorts. “Then why did you pack your swimming shorts today?” she asked The boy replied “Well I knew I was gonna be tempted so I figured I’d better be prepared.” One of the best ways to resist temptation is to avoid it altogether. Ezek 14:1 Then some elders of Israel came to me and sat down before me. Ezek 14:2 And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Ezek 14:3 "Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts and have put right before their faces the stumbling block of their iniquity. Should I be consulted by them at all? Ezekiel 14:1,3 goes along with Romans 13:14. God can’t help us if we won’t help ourselves. God may be the One to give us the strength to overcome temptation, but if we continue to unnecessarily put before our faces stumbling blocks, then should we be surprised if we fail? Matt 14:30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Finally and most importantly, and Lionheart said this already, Pray. Ocelot |
