23 | After death can saints see whats going o | Ecclesiastes | Ocelot | 165264
Eccl 9:5 For the living know they will die; but the dead do not know anything, nor have they any longer a reward, for their memory is forgotten. The Bible compares death to sleep. In John 11:11-14, Jesus compares death to sleep. "...after that He *said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep. The disciples then said to Him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover." Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of literal sleep. So Jesus then said to them plainly, "Lazarus is dead," In 1 Thess 4:15, 16 Paul says "For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first." |

26 | What do colors represent? | Is 1:18 | Ocelot | 172275
Dear Jazzycamp, You asked “What do colors represent?” As Searcher already pointed out, the Bible does not define any one color as representing any one thing (that I know of). It would be best to study the colors in context of the verses that mention them. Beyond that, it would simply be guessing. So “What do colors represent?” That all depends on who you ask. If you were to ask me, for example, you’d get a smart-alecky answer like “Green is the color of grass. Yellow is the color of the snow that’s bad to eat. Red means stop. Brown means it’s old and the reason the fridge stinks. Blue means that I’m sad. Violet’s a flower and black is the presence of all colors.” See what I mean? :-) Ocelot |

27 | did Jesus have a beard? | Is 50:6 | Ocelot | 170865
Hello Sandra l, welcome to the forum. The only verse in the Bible that refers to Jesus as having a beard that I am aware of is Isaiah 50:6 “I gave My back to those who strike Me, And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting.” That prophecy would have been fulfilled by both the high priest’s guards and the Romans. Also, it was Jewish custom for a man to shave off his beard ONLY when in mourning. So to answer your question, yes, Jesus had a beard. Ocelot |

29 | filthy rags | Is 64:6 | Ocelot | 191007
Greetings Hunger and Thirst, The point of view being expressed here is Isaiah the prophet's. However, since Isaiah is being inspired by God to speak and write these words he is consequently voicing God's point of view. As for the specific filthy rag, I believe that Isaiah's statement here is, at least in part, referencing chapter 61, verse 10, where he says "I will rejoice greatly in the LORD... For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness..." What Isaiah is saying is that any "good works" or "righteous deeds" that we would do to make ourselves more acceptable to God, in contrast to God's awesome righteousness are like dirty rags compared to a beautiful robe. Since it is Christ’s robe of righteousness that saves us from sin, the point is being made that we have absolutely no power to save ourselves. It is only by the grace of God, through Christ’s righteousness that we are able to be saved. Ocelot |

31 | what if i can't pay all of my tithes? | Mal 3:10 | Ocelot | 172727
Hello vocab3802, And welcome to the forum. You asked quite a few questions. But I’ll try and address them. First off, I know from reading a few other threads on this forum, that not all Christians believe that tithing is necessary. Some believe that tithing was required of the Jews only. You clearly don’t believe that (incidentally neither do I), and so I’ll write this with that in mind. So here are a few verses from scripture that may help you figure this one out. Mark 12:41-44: “And He [Christ] sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent. Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury; for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on." Matthew 6:25-33 "For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! Do not worry then, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for clothing?' For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” And finally, here is a beautiful promise. Malachi 3:10 "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this," says the LORD of hosts, "if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.” God said “Test Me”. Do you believe that God is telling the truth? Why not test Him in this? In Christian Love, Ocelot |

32 | Will natural affection go by the way? | Matt 5:9 | Ocelot | 173652
Hi Barbee, I don’t know the specifics of your situation. But if you’d like to make peace with your children, here’s what you should do. Admit you were wrong, and ask for your children’s forgiveness. If I were you, I would leave Satan out of it (Though he is very much at the center of it). It may not be a copout, but I can see how your children may see it that way (After all, aren’t ALL problems caused, to one degree or another, by Satan and sin?). I’d worry about YOUR part in the problem (and let God worry about Satan’s). Hopefully I haven’t horribly misunderstood you. :-) Matthew 5:9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” With Christian Love, Ocelot |

34 | Is it sexual impurity? | Matt 5:28 | Ocelot | 170978
Dear James, While Christ was here on earth He taught us that sin is not limited to actions but originates in our minds. In His sermon on the mount, Christ taught us that we don’t commit adultery, or fornication for that matter, only by our actions, but He said “anyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:28. Fornication is only a specific type of adultery. Time and again, Paul called people to sexual purity, 1 Thessalonians 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; Romans 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, Romans 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. 2 Timothy 2:22 Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. And here’s another angle. There’s no way to know if you will marry this woman. Say that when the time comes, you end up marrying someone else. Would you be proud to tell your wife of the things you’re doing? Let’s say the shoe was on the other foot. Imagine you’re married. Would you want your wife to have done these things with some other guy? Purity is very important to God. Now you have not committed any unpardonable sin or anything like that, but I would STRONGLY encourage you to take your relationship with this girl down quite a few notches. I pray that you will make the right choice. In Christian love, Ocelot |

Dear James, I wanted to add one more thing. I hope I didn’t come across as too harsh. I commend you for your willingness to look into this and to be as honest as you have been. Most people would not have had the courage (and many simply would not have cared) to even ask. I pray you’ll make the right decision. Ocelot |

36 | How do i treat this person? | Matt 5:44 | Ocelot | 168196
Hi Wings of Angels. What you are facing is not fun situation to be in. The Bible does address this sort of thing however. But it may not give the answer you want. Jesus said, in Matthew 5:43-48 "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?...” Jesus tells us to love our enemies. This command goes against every fiber of our natural being. We can’t do it on our own. It requires an act of God. Fortunately, God never tells us to do something that He won’t give us the strength to do. So here’s some more advice from the Bible. Proverbs 25:21, 22 “If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; For you will heap burning coals on his (or her) head…” God asks us to love our enemies, He asks us to feed them when they’re hungry and give them water when they’re thirsty. How can He ask so much? When Christ was hanging on a cross He prayed "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." So this would be my advice to you. First, pray, and ask God to give the strength to be loving when you don’t feel like it. Second, be kind to this person. It could be that through your kindness you might win this person to Christ when all the preaching in the world would never accomplish anything. Third, just because God asks us to forgive our enemies doesn’t mean that we have to become a doormat. Those are just some thoughts. I’ll pray for you. Ocelot |
