NASB | Isaiah 64:6 For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Isaiah 64:6 For we all have become like one who is [ceremonially] unclean [like a leper], And all our deeds of righteousness are like filthy rags; We all wither and decay like a leaf, And our wickedness [our sin, our injustice, our wrongdoing], like the wind, takes us away [carrying us far from God's favor, toward destruction]. [Lev 13:45, 46] |
Bible Question: from whos point of view was this statement made 'all our righteousness are as filthy rags' was there a specific filthy rag being refered to is this Gods point of view as well concerning His people |
Bible Answer: Greetings Hunger and Thirst, The point of view being expressed here is Isaiah the prophet's. However, since Isaiah is being inspired by God to speak and write these words he is consequently voicing God's point of view. As for the specific filthy rag, I believe that Isaiah's statement here is, at least in part, referencing chapter 61, verse 10, where he says "I will rejoice greatly in the LORD... For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness..." What Isaiah is saying is that any "good works" or "righteous deeds" that we would do to make ourselves more acceptable to God, in contrast to God's awesome righteousness are like dirty rags compared to a beautiful robe. Since it is Christ’s robe of righteousness that saves us from sin, the point is being made that we have absolutely no power to save ourselves. It is only by the grace of God, through Christ’s righteousness that we are able to be saved. Ocelot |
