Greetings Achilles and welcome to the forum. When you say “repent” are you referring to that which was spoken of by Christ as in Luke 13:3? Luke 13:3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. I want to make sure we are both on the same page. I hope you enjoy the forum, CDBJ |

404 | Hindu belief in reincarnation? | Eccl 12:7 | CDBJ | 179220
Greetings Palau and welcome to the Bible forum. There are millions of “religions” in the world and for one too try and justify what others believe by using the Bible isn’t the actually objective of God’s Word. Technically speaking, Christianity “isn’t a religion”; it’s a “relationship”! It’s a relationship with God through the person of God’s Son, Jesus Christ. In “religion” man does the work to try to gain God’s approval but in Christianity God does all the work and the believers is Christ totally rely on what God did for them in the person of his Son. Example: Speaking of Jesus; John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, Contrary to popular belief, not every one on this Earth is a child of God. The Bible is very explicit when describing how one becomes a child of God. Galatians 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. The key to becoming a son of God is by faith in Christ Jesus. That means a total trust in the person of Christ and the work He did. Have you had this experience yet in your life or is that something you’re not quite sure of at this point? I hope you enjoy the forum, CDBJ |

406 | Did Jesus have his own power on earth? | Hebrews | CDBJ | 178954
Greetings NewPilgrim, I think the answer to your question might be pretty well summed up in the following verses. In essence, while Christ was here on Earth he was at the same time holding the universe together. Hebrews 1:1-3 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, [2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; [3] Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; CDBJ |

408 | Faith | Gen 32:10 | CDBJ | 178727
Hi Mae68, The word faith as used in the English language is what is known as a "transitive verb", it takes an object for it to function properly. There is "no merit", as it were, on the behalf of the subject producing the faith; all of the credit goes to the object. The word used in the original language of the Koine Greek, was the word (PISTIS) or different forms of the same root word such as (PISTEUO), which is translated in the book of John in the English as (believe). The word faith and believe as stated in the Bible, to simplify matters, points to the object which God intends us to trust in, or rely on, or have hope in; and that object is God’s only provision for mankind, Jesus Christ, God’s, unique, precious Son. The sum of eternal life, with God, rest within the person and work of God’s Son, and what He did for us on the cross! John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. By believing emphatically on what Jesus did, “all” that is necessary for eternal life, is trusting in Christ, or having faith in Him; God promises that he will give us eternal life as a gift when we believe or have faith in Jesus. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. There is a “promise” in the Bible, that I cherish, and it points out faith and believing, in Jesus as the object. 1 John 5:10-13 He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. [11] And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. [12] He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. [13] These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. There is a false idea in the world that we are all the children of God but the Bible says that only those that believe in the Son, Jesus, are God’s children. John 1:11-12 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. [12] But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: Have a great day, and ask God to reveal His son to you as you study His Word, the Bible. 409 | Ones Own? | NT general Archive 1 | CDBJ | 178723
Greetings Lionheart, Next Paul offered instruction on how Timothy must deal with the widows in the congregation. Throughout the Old and New Testaments widows, along with aliens and orphans, are viewed as special objects of God’s mercy. As such they are to be taken under the wing of the congregation (cf. Deut. 10:18; 14:29; 24:17-21; Acts 6:1-7; James 1:27). As early as Acts 6 the church had established a charitable outreach to widows. Now about 30 years later the ministry to widows, of whom there were no doubt many, showed signs of being a major burden to the congregation. Paul was therefore eager in this passage to identify those who did not truly need help in order to leave enough for those who did. 5:3-4. Timothy was instructed to give proper recognition to (lit., “honor”) those who were truly widows—that is, widows who were really in need. These Paul contrasted with widows who had lost their husbands but who had children or grandchildren still living. Since in God’s economy the first responsibility for caring for the needy falls on the family (not the church and surely not the state), these family members should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own. In so doing, these family members would repay their “forebears” (prognosis; cf. 2 Tim. 1:3) part of the debt owed them. Such reciprocity is pleasing to God. It is “welfare” as God intended it. 5:5. The widow who is really in need and left all alone has nowhere to look for help but to God and His people. Thus one of the marks of a needy widow is that she puts her hope in God and therefore continues in petition and prayer night and day. Such a godly person, dedicated after the death of her husband to the service of the Lord, was deeply respected (cf. the description of the widow-prophetess Anna, Luke 2:37), and was viewed as worthy of the church’s support. 5:6. Not all women who became widows gave themselves to such godly service, of course. Some widows used their widowhood to seek after sensual pleasure (lives for pleasure); spatalo, (used elsewhere in the NT only in James 5:5). Some commentators suggest even the hint of prostitution here. In any case Paul stated that a life devoted to wanton pleasure, in stark contrast to the godly life described in 1 Timothy 5:5, produces a woman who is dead even while she lives (cf. Rom. 8:6; Rev. 3:1). One need only witness the spiritual emptiness produced within those who choose such a profligate lifestyle to understand Paul’s point. Such women must not be placed on the widows’ list. 5:7-8. In 4:11 Paul instructed Timothy to “command… these things” (parangelle tauta). Now, having added the intervening instructions, Paul repeated the exact words: “Command these things too.” Paul wanted Timothy to pass along these instructions about the list of widows in order that no one may be open to blame. The reference is somewhat ambiguous, but probably refers to the widows in the church. If the wrong women are included on the list their sensual lifestyles (cf. 5:6) will bring reproach on the entire group. But it may also refer to the remaining families of the widows. Failure to provide (pronoei means “to think ahead, to provide by seeing needs in advance”) for these family members gives the lie to any claim to know God (cf. Titus 1:16) and becomes de facto a denial of the faith. Indeed, such a failure renders the defaulting family member worse than an unbeliever, since even many non-Christians understand and fulfill their familial responsibilities. 415 | Can pastors retire? | Bible general Archive 3 | CDBJ | 177670
Hello Azure, No true believer in Christ retires as it were, they just change fields. There are scads of people that cross the paths of those in the body of Christ every day and it’s our privilege as believers to find a way to present the good news about Christ to those we come in contact with. I hope I am able to present to unbelievers, attending me at my death, the way to the precious Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Cor. 5:20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were entreating through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. The only time and ambassador can cease to function as an ambassador is when he is called home. 2 Tim. 2:24-26 And the Lord's bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, [25] with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, [26] and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will. Talking to people about their need for a savior isn’t work it’s a blessing that God has entrusted us with! CDBJ |

416 | Do most live by Matthew 7:12? | Bible general Archive 3 | CDBJ | 177459
Hi GTR and welcome to the forum, I found the same thing as you found in that verse. Matthew 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. I’ve learned that the Christian way of life is actually a supernatural way of life and it can’t be accomplished in the energy of the flesh; this is due to the fact that we all have an old sin nature. This old nature residing in us has dooming us for destruction. 1 Cor. 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. The Bible, along with its truths, and the way to carry them out, where always very nebulas and abstruse to my way of thinking. But there came a day when I had an actual experience with the living author of the Bible. From that point on, the Bible started making sense to me. The Lord sure can open one’s understanding of the Bible, if they really want to know the truth that it contains, but the key to the Bible resides in one very large portions of truth that must be understood first. John 6:45 (A) It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Understanding the Bible is kind of like doing a math problem, once one knows the formula it’s easy. Have you come to that point yet in your spiritual understanding or are you still working on that part? Have fun and enjoy the forum, CDBJ |

418 | Is God punishing Israel in Jer 9: 13-16? | Bible general Archive 3 | CDBJ | 177292
Greetings Emilio and welcome to the forum, God presented Israel with a conditional covenant which they continually break, as a nation, from the exodus to this very day. Proverbs 1:24 "Because I called, and you refused; I stretched out my hand, and no one paid attention; Jeremiah 11:10 "They have turned back to the iniquities of their ancestors who refused to hear My words, and they have gone after other gods to serve them; the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken My covenant which I made with their fathers." Jeremiah 13:10 'This wicked people, who refuse to listen to My words, who walk in the stubbornness of their hearts and have gone after other gods to serve them and to bow down to them, let them be just like this waistband, which is totally worthless. There are numerous account in the Bible that refer to the final trouble that Israel will face but they all pale by comparison to the final trouble. Jeremiah 30:7 Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it. Most of Israel will be wiped out in the future but a remnant will be delivered. Romans 11:25-26 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. [26] And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: The period of time that you asked about is a foreshadowing, a type that is yet to come, i.e. not the actual situation the way I see it in Jeremiah 9:13-16. 419 | Emergent Church question | Bible general Archive 3 | CDBJ | 177171
Greetings MJH, I don’t have a clue as to what the “Emergent Church” is or even if such a situation is prevalent today. I don’t know why one would need help in spotting, what ever it is, that would cause them to emerge if they are teaching something other then what we already have contained within the confines of the Bible? Paul pretty much zeroed in on a group that was trying to preach another Jesus, as it were. Galatians 1:7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you, and want to distort the gospel of Christ. It’s interesting to note the way our Secrete Service trains it’s agents to spot counterfeit money. There are millions of bogus bills in circulation and it’s literally impossible to point out all of the phony money that’s going around so to save a lot of wasted time and effort the agents just know for certain what the genuine currency looks like and all the rest are counterfeits. If the church you are attending is drifting off center from the Bible then I would say they are wrong. I am having virtually that exact same scenario, in the local assembly, where I attend and as a result I am folding up my tent and moving on. When it comes to the point where I don’t feel comfortable advising a new believer to attend the church that I attend, for spiritual growth, then I would say there is a proverbial fly in the ointment! Psalm 119:160 The sum of Thy word is truth, And every one of Thy righteous ordinances is everlasting. 1 Thes. 5:21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; Have a great day, CDBJ |

420 | Seems to change in stories? | Mal 3:6 | CDBJ | 176993
Hi JRM, I think you might have answered your own question. You suggested; “Is this an anthropomorphic moment” I believe it might be a little closer calling it an anthropopathisum. It’s more or less describes the “thinking of God” in human terms so that we can better understand Him. It doesn’t add up that God, being omniscient, would actually have to change His mind because he would have known what He was going to do in the first place, and He knows the outcome before it ever happens; this is His “all knowing” or omniscient ability”. The choice of wording used, as in, Genesis 6:6 And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. It isn’t like the results were a surprise to the Lord that things turned out the way they did! God knows “all the outcomes” of every event, even the iffy situations that could have been involved. Our hind sight is 20/20 where as God knows the future as perspicuous as the past. The wording is expressed that way in the Bible so that the human realm of thinking, with our finite minds, can somewhat understand a small portion what God was doing in His infinite way of thinking. That makes it about as clear as mud, right? CDBJ |
