321 | Ahaziah a ruler at 22 or 42? | 2 Chr 22:2 | prayon | 9249
His reign lasted only one year beginning at age 22 (2Kings 8:25); the Masoretic Text of 2 Chron 22:2 gives his age as 42(Septuagint "twenty"; some manuscripts "twenty-two"). Taken froom the Eerdmans Bible Dictionary.
322 | What is an ASHERAH POLE? | 2 Chr 24:18 | prayon | 8571
Hi gubber! Just to add a few more comments on Asherah. Asherah, the Cananite goddess according to Ugaritic tradition is the wife of El. In the Ugaritic literature she is called "Lady of the Sea", a title that may signify "she who treads on the sea." Apart from her name, she has other connedtions with the sea. Her servant is called"fisherman of Lady Asherah of the Sea." A drinking cup from Ras-Shama (the modern Arabic name of the site of the ancient city of Ugarit) seems to portray her underwater. It is unclear if the statues were made of wood or it may of been a living tree planted to serve as Asherrah. If I remember correctly they were all disposed of in a certain valley but I can not find the reference. |

323 | Why was Nehemiah afraid? | Nehemiah | prayon | 10844
Nehemiah was deeply grieved about the condition of Jerusalem. I'm very sure that he was afraid the king would not let him go to rebuild it. However, I think that the main reason he was afraid was because a sad countenance was a crime punishable by death. prayon

325 | why God? | Job 2:6 | prayon | 58770
Greetings lialia, God allows us to go through the wildernesses we go through to help us grow and mature. We need to continue to grow in our walk with the Lord so that we will learn what we need to know to do His work. God gives us the choice of how we want to deal with these wildernesses. It is very easy to take your focus off God and focus on self and the circumstances we are in. It takes strength to keep our eyes on Christ. When we become depressed and discouraged we are allowing Satan to have control over our emotions. God does not want this to happen. He wants us to keep our eyes on Him and allow Him to deal with the negative circumstances. Matt 7:9-11 asks us what father when his son asks for bread will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish will give him a serpent? How much more will your father in heaven give things to those who ask him? God wants His children to be happy, the above verses tell us this. Be strong and keep your eyes focused on Jesus. Do not allow Satan to gain control of any aspect of your life. Some thing to think about: If God did not give us hard times we would not know how to appreciate the good times. prayon |

326 | What does the Bible say about hell? | Job 11:8 | prayon | 20328
Greetings Valu83, In addition to jlpandilinan answer I would like to add: There is a fourth name used in the RSV in 2Pet. 2:4 - Tartarus; The greek text uses a verb form of the classical name Tartarus meaning consigning to Tartarus. In classical thought Tartarus was the lowest part of the underworld and a place of punishment over against Elysium, the place of the blessed. It signifies a place of punishment for the wicked. (Eerdman's Bible Dictionary) Hell, the location of the "furnace of fire" is also described as a place where there will be "wailing and gnashing of teeth" (Matt 13:49-50). Luke 16:23 states that hell is a place of "torments". Rev 9:1-3 describes it as a "bottomless pit" where when the shaft was opened there arose "smoke like the smoke of a great furnace" that caused the "sun and the air to be darkened". Out of this smoke "locusts that were given authority over the scorpions of the earth". Rev 14:10-11 states that hell is a place of "torment with fire and sulfur" with "smoke of their torment that goes up forever and ever". Rev 19:20 calls it a "lake of fire that burns with sulfur". Rev 21:8 adds that it also burns with "brimstone". Rev 13:8 says that "anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life will be thrown into that lake of fire". prayon |

327 | I need a explaination of why God quests | Job 38:2 | prayon | 110247
Greetings IwomanofGod and welcome to the forum! In this book we have, 1) The history of Job's sufferings, and his patience under them 2) A dispute between him and his friends upon them, in which, The opponents were Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. 3) The issue of all in Job's honour and prosperity, Upon the whole, we learn that many are the afflictions of the righteous, but that when the Lord delivers them out of them all the trial of their faith will be found to praise, and honour, and glory. God had listened to all of their accusations of each other and of Him throughout the first 37 chapters. In chapter 38 it is God's turn to speak. In verses 1-7 God reveals His omnipotence to Job. He never did explain to Job why the things happened that did He just asked Job if He was ageless, powerful, wise and perfect as God. Throughout chapter 38 and 39 God asked Job repeatedly if he could do all the things that God had done. In the beginning of Chap 40 Job apologizes but God still issues him a challenge to try and do the things that He had done. The chapter continues with God unleashing another round of rebukes to Job. IN chapter 42:1-6 Job finally truly confessed and repented to God. Job still did not know why he had suffered like he did but he quietly bowed in humble submission to God and admitted that He was sovereign. If you have any questions please ask. prayon |

328 | root word study, "sons of God" OT | Job 38:7 | prayon | 50222
In the Book of Job the phrase is used for angelic or nonhuman beings (Job 1:6; 2:1). These sons of God presented themselves before God in what might be called a heavenly assembly. Satan appeared with them, although this does not necessarily mean he was one of the “sons of God.” Thus the stage was set for the telling of the story of Job. Hope this helps. prayon |

331 | Significance of Ps 51 | Psalm | prayon | 23788
Hello Chuiren! There are a few lessons that can be learned from this Psalm. The main one, I believe is that it tells us that no sin is too great to be forgiven. God can and will forgive us for any sin if we just ask Him. He may not, however, remove the consequences - like He did not in David's case. In addition when ever we sin, we sin against God. All sin hurts us and hurts others but the ultimate sin is against God. Sin, in any form, is a rebellion against God. When we sin we need to ask God to cleanse us from the outside in. "Create in me a clean heart, O God". We can not become closer to God when sin seperates us from Him. In addition, we can never please God by outward actions if the attitude in our heart is not right. As things sit we tend to forget about them that is why we need to ask forgiveness for a sin then and there. Another thing to watch for is moving one thing and covering it up with another. You must clean the first spot first. Godly behavior can only come from a clean heart. It also tells us to teach what we have learned and God's forgiveness so that we can reach out to others who are lost and hurting and tell them about God's goodness. prayon |

333 | Does God hate some people? | Ps 5:5 | prayon | 124838
Greetings TKBjork, Whe you don't understand a passage it sometimes helps to look at other translations. Many times when you do the passage becomes much clearer. Consider these translations: God's word: Those who brag cannot stand in your sight. You hate all troublemakers Message Bible: Hot-Air-Boaster collapses in front of you; you shake your head over Mischief-Maker Literal Translation: The boasters shall not set themselves before Your eyes. You hate all workers of iniquity. New King James: The foolish shall not stand in Your sight. You hate all doers of iniquity. Hope this along with what Kalos said helps. prayon |

334 | WHAT IS MEANT BY PSALMS 8:4 | Ps 8:4 | prayon | 112628
Greetings and welcome to the forum! In order to understand verse 4 you have to understand verse 3. David is comptemplating the awesomeness of God. In all His glory and majesty who are we that He should care about man. He made the heavens and the earth, and is in control of all but yet He sent His one and only Son to die for us that we might live. Just who are we that He should care so much? prayon
335 | Can Animals Think? | Ps 32:9 | prayon | 21421
Greetings, This verse does not refer to animals being able to think but rather to some people being stubborn as mules rather than letting God guide them step by step. The bit and bridle refers to God having to discipline them somewhat like you use a bit in a mules mouth to guide it. Some people leave God only one option, if He wants to keep them useful to Him, He must use discipline and punishment. prayon
336 | Psalm 46:10 | Ps 46:10 | prayon | 128012
Greetings 8788, You are not alone in your problem, I do the same thing. I am still looking for a way to win this battle. Unfortunetly there is no cut and dry solution. Some of the things that help me are to have some praise music praying. I have found that when I listen and concentrate on the words that praise him I can keep the praise going when the song is off and praising is a part of prayer. Another thing that I do is I will pray one thought through and then call out the name of Jesus over and over until my mind is solely on Him again. You can also make yourself a "prayer area or room" where there are no distractions. Surround yourself with Him or His creation. Make sure that you are away from distractionary noises. Some people write the prayer they are praying to keep them focused. I tend to walk and pray. I also do a lot of praying in my car while I am driving. I also pray a lot in tongues (I don't know if your denomination believes in tongues). When I pray in tongues the Holy Ghost inside me continues to pray even if my mind wanders and it will "snap me out" or my mind wanderings. If need be then keep a sheet of paper close so that when a problem comes to mind or something that you need to do write it down so you don't forget and then forget about it. You can also use this paper to write down what God gives you while in prayer. May God bless you in your struggle to overcome! prayon |

337 | Why Doesn't God Desire Sacrifices? | Ps 51:16 | prayon | 10997
Steve, God wants a contrite heart and a broken spirit. You can never please God by outward actions - no matter how good - if your inheart attitude is not right. I believe that God was saying that he doesn't want sacrifices if your heart is not in the right place. Just as Jesus taught us that actions do not get you into heaven if your heart is not right with Him.
338 | why did jesus speak in parables ? | Ps 78:2 | prayon | 26925
First to fulfill what the prophet said as stated in Psalms 78: 2-3,(see also Matt 13:34-35). Parables were a departure from his normal style of preaching to the multitude. Many who flocked to hear Jesus listened with their ears but did not respond with their hearts. Jesus' teaching after this started to distinguish between the 2 groups. To His followers He spoke openly. In this sense, Jesus' use of parables represented both judgement and grace. Judgement because a parable hides the truth from those who are too indifferent. At the same time it was an act of grace. Parables are apt to stimulate a persons interest to discover the meaning making them search for the truth. He was always ready to explain the parables to those who truly sought Him. prayon |
