281 | I need bibical knowledge as to why satan | Deut 18:11 | prayon | 20509
Greetings Marlene and welcome to the forum! I would direct you to Deut. 18:9-13 - Warnings against unholy practices. "NO ONE shall be found AMONG you .... who practices divination, or is a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer, or one who casts spells, or who consults ghosts or spirits or who seeks oracles from the dead. For who ever does these things is abhorrent to the Lord" There is a lot of information out that you could use in reference to Harry Potter. I recommend you go to the following site: www.gospelcom.net/menconi/index.html Al Menconi has a lot of documentation that you could use. As for tatoos see Lev. 19:28 - "You shall not make any gashes in your flesh for the dead or tattoo any marks upon your body". If I can help you some more let me know! prayon |

282 | Is it alright to talk/pray to the dead? | Deut 18:11 | prayon | 72068
Greetings, I would ask how you are talking or praying to the deceased person. If you could be more specific I could give you a more detailed answer to your question. I agree with what the others said. Praying to the dead will serve no purpose. Jesus is our mediator to God. The deceased can not step into that role. prayon

Deu 13:4: Worship the LORD your God, fear him, obey his commands, listen to what he says, serve him, and be loyal to him. prayon Psa 29:2 Give to the LORD the glory his name deserves. 287 | distance around Jericho | Josh 6:3 | prayon | 63776
Greetings SDTaylor, I could find only limited information on the size of Jericho. The Nelson’s illustrated Bible dictionary states: "By far the most imposing site of the three is Old Testament Jericho, a pear-shaped mound about 366 meters (400 yards) long, north to south, 183 meters (200 yards) wide at the north end, and some 67 meters (70 yards) high. It has been the site of numerous archaeological diggings." The Believer’s study Bible in 6:2–5 says "Jericho was a city of about 9 acres that would have taken about 20–30 minutes to march around." The city, which was built on a hill, was fortified by a double ring of walls, the outer 6 feet thick and the inner 12 feet thick. prayon |

288 | How do you know? | Josh 10:12 | prayon | 5449
Evolution/ This says it all! One day a 6 year old girl was sitting in the classroom. The teacher was going to explain evolution to the children. The teacher asked a little boy: Teacher: Tommy do you see the tree outside? Tommy: Yes. Teacher: Tommy, do you see the grass outside? Tommy: Yes. Teacher: Go outside and look up and see if you can see the sky. Tommy: OK. (He returned a few minutes later) Yes, I saw the sky. Teacher: Did you see God? Tommy: No. Teacher: That's my point. We can't see God because he isn't there, he doesn't exist. A little girl spoke up and wanted to ask the boy some questions. Teacher agreed and she asked the boy: Little Girl: Tommy, do you see the tree outside? Tommy: Yes. Little girl: Tommy do you see the grass outside? Tommy: Yessssss (getting tired of the questions by this time) Little girl: Did you see the sky? Tommy: Yessssss Little Girl: Tommy, do you see the teacher? Tommy: Yes Little Girl: Do you see her brain? Tommy: No Little Girl: Does that mean she doesn't have one? FOR WE WALK BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT II CORINTHIANS 4:7 |

289 | God's expectations of us | Josh 22:5 | prayon | 144794
Greetings bonikow, Josh 22:5 gives us the answer: "But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. and again in 1Jo 3:23-24 "This is his commandment: to believe in his Son, the one named Jesus Christ, and to love each other as he commanded us. Those who obey Christ's commandments live in God, and God lives in them. We know that he lives in us because he has given us the Spirit." In return if we obey His commandments what we can expect from God is for Him to be our: refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble (Psa 46:1); healer (Psa 30:2, Is 54:5b); protector (Ps 5:11, Mal 3:11); healer (Jer 30:17); refuge (Is 26:3, Psa 9:9, 34:4); savior (Rom 6:23) strength (Psa 46:1,18:2-3) Hope this helps. prayon |

290 | Why did Gideon test the Lord (vv 36-40)? | Judg 6:37 | prayon | 11633
Was Gideon really testing God, or was he simply asking God for more encouragement? Either way, though his motive was right (to obey God and defeat the enemy), his method was not that great. Gideon seems to know that his requests might displease God (6:39), and yet he still demanded 2 miracles (6:37,39) even after he saw fire from the rock (6:21). It is true to make good decisions we need facts. Gideon had the facts but he still hesitated, he wanted more proof. Demanding extra signs is an indicator of unbelief. Fear often keeps us from taking action when we should. Visible signs are unnecessary if they only confirm what we already know. We should ask for assurance if we are not sure about a matter, but if we know it to be God's will then we shouldn't need more assurance from Him. |

293 | Author of Ruth and Time frame of writing | Ruth | prayon | 5705
According to Talmudic tradition Samuel wrote the book of Ruth but the book contains no clue as to who truly wrote it. The favored opiniion is that it was written between the tenth to the eighth century BC during the period of the Monarchy. However one source (Life Application Bible) put it between 1375-1050 BC.
294 | Who was Ruth? | Ruth | prayon | 86722
Greetings Drdata, Ruth was one of the 5 women mentioned in the geneology of Jesus (Matt 1:5). Ruth was the Moabite woman who married the son of Elimelech and Naomi who had left Bethlehem to settle in Moab.. When Elimelech and both his sons died Naomi decided to return to her home in Bethlehem. She told both of her sons wives to remain in Moab where their family was. Orpah returned as suggested but Ruth refused saying "Wherever you go I will go and wherever you lodge I will lodge and your people will be my people" (Ruth 1:16). Ruth went to Bethlehem with Naomi and took the initaitive to provide for her and Naomi's existence. While gleaning the fields she met Boaz a relative of Ruth's. By following her mother-in-laws advice she ended up marrying Boaz and gave birth to Obed who was the father of Jesse and the grandfather of David. Ruth is the story of redemption. It shows that God's redemptive plan extends beyond the Jews to the Gentiles. Boaz redeemed Ruth just as Jesus redeems us from being slaves to sin. prayon |

Greetings Judy, It is also interesting that Boaz was the son of Salmon, one of the two spies that entered into the promised land. The two spies were saved from death by Rahab. Salmon went on to marry Rahab and produced Boaz. (see Matt 1:5). Boaz went on to father Obed who was the grandfather of King David. prayon

297 | What should be a woman's boundaries? | Ruth 2:22 | prayon | 131118
Greetings Reighnskye, YOu have asked a good question and you are right it is especially applicable in today's times. It is not wrong for a woman to work among men. Boundaries for each woman should be set according to the woman and the men she works with. Some men the woman could clown around with and they would know that it all in fun. There are some men that if you clowned around with them there would be sexual conutations assumed. In all cases though the woman should carry herself as a Christ-like person. She should uphold the standards that the Bible sets for us. She should also be sure that she does not cause anyone to stumble. (Mal 2:8; 1Cor 10:32) Hope this helps. prayon |

298 | Naomi's instructions to Ruth re: Boaz? | Ruth 3:4 | prayon | 33487
Greetings, You have picked a beautiful and powerful story to read. In the verses you are referring to Naomi is telling Ruth to act in accordance with the ancient Isrealite and New Eastern custom and law. It was common for the servant to lay at the feet of their master and even share a part of his covering. By observing this custom, Ruth would inform Boaz that he could be her kinsman - redeemer; that he could find someone to marry her or marry her himself. Since Boaz was a generation older than Ruth this overture would indicate Ruth's desire to marry Boaz herself, which the older gracious Boaz would not of initiated with a younger woman. What started out as family business ended up in a beautiful loving relationship that through the generations led to the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. prayon |

299 | Need some help in saying right things! | 1 Samuel | prayon | 60521
Greetings Mae64, Boy, does your senario sound familar! When you care for your son as you are doing you are enabling him to have a sinful life. In a commentary on 2Pet 3:11 Matthew Henry’s Commentary says "Never expect to be found at that day of God in peace, if you are lazy and idle in this your day, in which we must finish the work that is given us to do. It is only the diligent Christian who will be the happy Christian in the day of the Lord. Our Lord will suddenly come to us, or shortly call us to him; and would you have him find you idle?’’ Remember there is a curse denounced against him who does the work of the Lord negligently. You said your son is 41 and I am assuming that he is not mentally challenged. I think that tough love needs to be practiced here. If you continue to provide for him, he will continue to use you. He is a grown man and, although it was a hard lesson for me to learn with my sons, they are adults and we need to let them be accountable for their actions. If we continue to get them out of trouble they will not "learn their lessons" and continue to make the same mistakes. njenkins mentioned Eli's sons in the previous answer. Eli was a lax father who had no control over his two sons. Phinehas and Hophni took meat from sacrificial animals before they were dedicated to God. They also “lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle” (1 Sam. 2:22). God pronounced judgment on Eli because of his failure to discipline his sons.(Nelson’s new illustrated Bible dictionary). Hope this helps. prayon |

300 | Was Eli lax in discipline? | 1 Sam 2:22 | prayon | 8738
Eli was more than just lax! Although he had much recognition and respect which he earned in public ha was unable to handle his private affairs. He lacked the two necessary qualities need for parenting - firm resolve and corrective action. He did not take any disiplinary action when made aware of their wrong doings. We must remember also that Eli was not only a father trying to handle his sons he was also the priest ignorig the sins of the priests under his jurisdiction. God, in his love for Isreal, could not allow the problem to continue. Therefore God planned to kill them (v. 25b). God allowed Eli's sons to die as a result of their sins. Eli was also guilty of sin. First for allowing his sons to get away with sinning and second because he honored his sons above God for letting them sin. |
