282 | A mate from God | 2 Cor 6:14 | azurelaw | 222193
Dear Child of j, Brother Beja has given you an excellent answer. He expressed so well where the wife's struggle is!!! You have no idea what the torture is and how heartbreaking it is to be a wife of an unbelieving husband (read my profile). Don't make the same mistake as I did. God is absolutely clear in 2 Cor 6:14. Obey or you will have to take the consequences. Despite my rebellious behaviour in marriage, God has been so gracious to me that my husband does not forbid me to go to church and I even can serve as a deacon. I am not merely praying for my husband's salvation, but also he would someday devote himself to serve the Lord with me. Shalom Azure |

286 | Why apostle Paul identifies rock | 1 Cor 10:4 | azurelaw | 221974
Dear Alex, The answer lies in the verse you quote - the AMP version which reads:- "And they all drank the same spiritual (supernaturally given) drink. For they drank from a spiritual Rock which followed them [produced by the sole power of God Himself without natural instrumentality], and the Rock was Christ. [Exod. 17:6; Num. 20:11.]" See the cross reference scripture : Exodus 17:6 Shalom Azure |

290 | Who was John referring to? | 1 John | azurelaw | 221957
Dear Barry, Welcome to the forum. May the Lord bless you and your fellowship while you are diligently studying the precious Word of God. I believe the below is helpful for you to understand better the background and the aim of John's epistle/letter to the church. **** Introduction to 1st John "The joy of fellowship with God within the church to which John wrote was threatened by false teaching. Those responsible for it claimed to have a superior knowledge of Jesus Christ and an enlightened morality. They believed that human flesh, as part of the physical, created world, was evil. Only spirit was good. Therefore they held that the Son of God could not have become a full human being, for that would have meant he was joining himself to evil. So they taught that Jesus Christ only appeared to be a human being; he took the form of a man but was really a phantom. Such teaching has been called Docetism (from the Greek dokein meaning “to seem to be” or “to appear to be”). The same false teachers also taught that salvation was an escape from this evil, material world. This meant that they were not concerned with purity and wholeness of life for the human body since that body was evil. So immorality was permissible. Living a holy life in the present body had nothing to do with salvation. It was to meet this false teaching that John insisted on the reality of the humanity of Jesus Christ. Of this fact the apostles were eye-witnesses for they had lived with him and knew him to be fully human. The Son of God wholly entered into our human condition, living as a man amongst men. He lived a perfect human life and died a human death. Through the Son of God who became man Christians have fellowship with God." - Peter and Vita Toon ***** One more commentary (a lengthy one but very detail, too) can be found at : http://evanglibrary.org.uk/members/com/nt/1jnlaw/lc2.html Shalom Azure |

291 | Crucified outside city gates | Heb 13:11 | azurelaw | 221954
Dear JNash, Here are some citations for your reference and I hope they are helpful. **** Lev. 4:8-12 The remainder of the offering, the disassembly or cutting up of the bull is the same as for the peace offering except for the outer portions, the skin and the carcass of the bull itself. The fat portions, the two kidneys, and the covering of the liver, are returned to the alter and burned thereon. The remainder of the bull is taken out of the tabernacle court area to a place outside and burned outside. This place is the same location where the ashes are dumped. Jesus was taken outside of the city. He had been betrayed by all of His followers, all of the priests, all of His friends and acquaintances. There was no one who would stand up and speak for Him during His several trials and even up to the point of the Cross. No one came forward. Man has no part in the work of God. When it came right down to His time of need, only God was there for Him, and no one else. Thus the carcass was taken outside of the tabernacle to be burned. The ashes speak of the completed sacrifice. When there are ashes only, then the work is done. The ashes speak of the finished work of Christ on the Cross. This description of the sin offering is explained in Heb. 13:11-13, with respect to the body being burned outside the camp, likewise Christ was crucified outside the city gate. He had been forsaken by all. Forsaken by the Levitical priesthood which had by this time thoroughly compromised and distorted the whole Levitical ritual process and ceremonial feasts, Forsaken by His apostles and disciples who had lived with him for two plus years, hearing Jesus speak, seeing Him perform miracles almost on a daily basis. Forsaken by God the Father and God the Spirit on the Cross during those three final hours. All of this while outside the city, out in the sticks, humiliated and dishonored by all. So Jesus Christ became a total and complete rejection by all. It was thus that He performed the greatest work in all of history, and for each one of us though none of deserved it. (source : dailybiblestudy.org) ***** The direction in which He is led is outside the city. He must not die in Jerusalem, though multitudes of Prophets had perished there. Though the Temple was the central place of sacrifice, yet the Son of God must not be offered there, for He was an offering of another kind and must not lie upon their altars. He must be led outside the city because, by the Jews, He was treated as a flagrant offender who must be executed at the Tyburn of the city, in the appointed place of doom known as Calvary or Golgotha. When Naboth was unjustly condemned for blasphemy, they carried him forth out of the city and stoned him with stones that he died. And afterwards Stephen—when they cried out against him as a blasphemer, they cast him out of the city and there they stoned him. Our Savior, therefore, must die in the ordinary place of execution, that in all respects He might be numbered with the transgressors. The rulers of the city so loathed and detested their great Reprover that they rejected Him and would not suffer Him to die within their city walls! Alas, poor Jerusalem, in casting out the Son of David, you did cast out your last hope—now are you bound over to desolation! He was led outside of the city because, from that time on, no acceptable sacrifice could be offered there. They might go on with their offering of daily lambs and they might sacrifice their bullocks and burn the fat of fed beasts—but from that day the substance of the sacrifice had gone away from them and Israel’s offerings were vain oblations. --- C. H. Spurgeon (source: spurgeongems.org) ***** Shalom Azure |

Dear confused, 1/ The subject should have been discussed a lot on the forum in the past. You may try doing a word search "canon" via the "Advanced Search" function for further study. 2/ I would also recommend you 2 articles which I think helpful for your reference: (a) Formation of the New Testament Canon (link: http://www.bible-researcher.com/canon1.html) (b) Is the New Testament Text Reliable? - by Greg Koukl (link: str.org) 3/ You say "love to hear how you guys have settled this for yourselves." 297 | were babys killed at passover | Ex 12:12 | azurelaw | 221723
Dear wejlly, No. See the below verse that not all babies, but all firstborn (including grown up man and animals / beasts in the land of Egypt). God is so merciful that He did not kill all (as He did when He judged the wicked people in Noah's time), but retained the second born children onward. Ex 12:12 'For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments--I am the LORD. 299 | what's salt and light on a dark world | Matthew | azurelaw | 221595
Dear curlertwirler, I suppose you are referring to Matthew Chapter 5. Please note the below is a citation from pastor John Piper's sermon where he refuted the prosperity gospel preaching. I believe the context of the scripture he was using in the explanation about the salt and light could shed some light on your better understanding. You have to grasp the main idea of Jesus' teaching on salt and light within the context of the beatitude in Matthew in order to have a proper understanding. ******* The context of Jesus’ saying shows us what the salt and light are. They are the joyful willingness to suffering for Christ. Here is what Jesus said, “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. You are the salt of the earth. . . . You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:11-14). What will make the world taste (the salt) and see (the light) of Christ in us is not that we love wealth the same way they do. Rather, it will be the willingness and the ability of Christians to love others through suffering, all the while rejoicing because their reward is in heaven with Jesus. ****** Shalom Azure |
