261 | Can a Christian dance? | Bible general Archive 1 | justme | 52556
When I was in fifth garde in in the early mid 50's I often heard from the Punpit warnings about Movie shows, dancing, smoking and drinking. Our pastor made a solid impression on me. The one area that few ever talked about was swiming and beach parties, or hay rides. I wondered at the time why dancing a polka or square dance with lots of clothes on was so bad. At the beach parties the girls sure showed a lot more to see than at a dance. The hayrides in highschool were really kissing and huggen times. I know compaired to now those were very tame things. I have lived a life that God has watched over me, and I have stayed pure. But today teens are dealing with a huge consuming fire of sexual lust and almost overwhelming temptation. I never thought I would ever see such blatent open sexual diversions come out in the open public, and be so generally accepted. Maybe we need a few old time outspoken modern preachers to remind us that there are some areas we do not belong seeing, doing, or goung to. There will always be the "can christians do" things as long as we have the ability to be tempted. agape, justme |

EdB: See how important everyones voice is? Every AoG church member, I know, and I have asked considers then selves Charismatic. With 160 some kinds of Baptists is it any wonder there is such confusion as to what Baptist believe? Thanks again. agape, justme |

Hank: I remember a teacher I had many years ago. If you asked Can I do this or that she would say yes you can. No, you may not. I see this wording quite simular, when eternal security is brought up. Often the implacation is how little "can" I do and still get to heaven. When I hear that I doubt the person has a saving faith. agape, justme |

EdB. Comming from my background where I was taught to sit or sing and be very controled, this is hard to imagine. I am sure by what you say it meets you need for worship. I am glad you are happy. Agape, justme |

EdB: John 3:16 The far greater event will to see Jesus. Why he loves my rotten soul, I would love to hear Him Say. Why He did and rescue me, for such a speck of dirt. Perhaps the secomd will be tha change in my disposition where my attitude will love rather thanhave pride or hurt some wounded brethern. Thery is so much To say I don't know how or why, but love will abide. agape, justme |

266 | Christian growth, and Faith is hard? | Bible general Archive 1 | justme | 52795
I will have statred my pilgramage 20 years ago next March. At times I am over whelmed with how unworthy I am. For own me I truely am. By Jesus's grace and mercy and love, as he stands before the Father in pure white garments, and nail perced hands and feet, If words could express How I feel I would say "gulty Father of crimes and sin against your Son. But standing before the Father as a blood washed child of Christ. My punishment has beeen paid. I have in truth been redeemed. My Jesus my Lord thank you. agape, justme |

269 | Too many Translations in English? | Bible general Archive 1 | justme | 53962
Hank: I pay more, but I have bought leather bibles, and use a product called INSTANT SHINE it is clear and keeps the leather plyable. Brfore thic product came out I used a product from KIWIE. I have some 25 year old bibles that still are very nice but show natural ware. Also Zondervan stii offers better grade Bibles, and Broadman. Most welll conctructed bibled offer a life time replacement against bad workmanship. I agree about pastors who use these child like versions. My NASB updated is the bets they make, and something about leather seems special for the Bjble. I have rebound a few bibles from the 1870's and it took several weeks of all my spare time. So I believe you are correct in saying that cheap Bibles are no bargan unless you are giving them away in mass.

Searcher: Bless you! That was more than I had hoped for. Yes I do have a reprint of the orignal KJV. Reading is slower becauses the letters are different v is u ans many more like this. The spelling is very simular to mine at times, and in some cases it;s a struggle to get the word others are quite easy. I could led some to Christ with it! so at it's, most odd reading in 1611 to now Th e basic word remains basicly the same as near as I can tell. So you got a big hand shake and a God bless you, well dome! Ye doeth well in instruction of the brethern. Here are a few examples of odd spellings. Mark was Marke, sins sinnes, Son Sonne, Forgive forgue, John Iohn, John 3:16 "For God so loued y world, that he gaue his only begotten Sonne: that whosoeuer beleeueth in him, should not perish, but haue euerlasting life." So ye can seeth it is not also beyondthe the vernderstanding of vesens today. By the way The 1611 had the "Apocrypha" which was take out some where along the line. This is all very interesting to me. I hope youas well. Nelson published a word for reprint of the 1611 in 1982 which I think I remember it was rather costly for a hard back. I do not know if it is still in print anylonger. agape, justme |

275 | HCSB TRANSLATION? | Bible general Archive 1 | justme | 55037
Kalos: I wanted to know badenought I looked it up! Holman Christian Standard Bible. I read sone verses. My question is not directed at you but Bible Publishers. WHY ANOTHER ENGLISH VERSION? I think my wife and I have about 13 different versions now. By the way in my most modest but humble opinion The Willians New Testament is a treasure. This was published first in 1937. Holman was assigned the Copyrights in 1965, and 1966. Then in 1986 Holman got complete rights to this most spectular New Testament. Have you got one or seen one? Whem I was In Dr. Willian Cobel's New Testament Class at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary some how he arranged so we could but copies. I consider this one of my treasured books. Thanks for the fun! agape, justme |

276 | Brand new out of date NASB? | Bible general Archive 1 | justme | 55316
EdB: I was addressing gould55, but adding your two cents worth is ok with me. The tone of you note is more than a "tad" unfriendly! I would call it almost sarcastic. I don't mind a open challange to my "information" but you come rather close to saying I don't know where I speak from. I am answering you so you can be better informed. I am not refering to Wal Mart or CBD or Sam's Club! To become a Christian Book Store owner it requires about 25 to 50 thousand dollars, to be an independant owner. When Family Book Stores, which was a franchize, the start up cost was much higher! The price a store owner pays depends on VOLUME! On many books there are minimum count amounts to even buy one. Some require 10, or more. Unless it is a special order which there is little if any profit after transportation and calling the person to tell them the order is in. In a very typical Mom and Pop Christian Book Store they put in about 72 hours in six days! When additional help is required that is an added cost. Location and Name recogintion is the first most important thing a store ouner must have. That means usually a higher rent area. Then it's varity of stock of books. In Bibles alone the expence can be staggering, if you want more than the bare miminum. Customer service is absoultly the most single thing that will make or brake you. Then there is advertizement. Christian radio expects your "support", and phone books, there are usually three to be in. Then you want to be competive, with Wal Mart or CBD or Sams. Now remember these BIG outlet stores buy these books by the hundreds of thousands! Mean while the Mom and Pop store orders what the HOPE will sell! Often books set unsold. Would be customers have handeled books, them and bent covers, or the child mother was carring slobbered on a page or two. There are returns. "I did not know the author was a pertrib person", after reading the book. Or the Bible I picked out for aunt Jane she does not like. This is after her name was put on! Remember the small Book Store Owner has to keep their customer happy so they will return! Just because a Book store marks up a book by 40 percent does not mean that's what they made! Indeed they might well have lost money! A Christian Book Store profit or loss is determined by the end of the year talley of the books! Not on a single item! If you were able to get a typical Christian Book Store owner to tell you their actual profit at the end of the year you would see how mistaken you are! THE TYPICAL INDIVDUAL OWNER MAKES ON THE AVRAGE 4 TO 6 PERCENT! I worked for ZONDERVAN and I was in a special sales division and my commision was about 40 percent, but after expences, and everything the first year I was in the negative for more that 15 percent! the next three years improved. My best year was 3 percent profit. My job was working with churches, and many times they were late with payments, or just quit paying! Do not think that Mom and Pop Christian Book stores don't have there fair share of bad accounts as well. Ther is an assumption that every church should be entitled to an account, and if you don't agree to it see how quickly the news spreds. Just try and see if Sam's or Walmart will special order a book for you. I shop a lot at Wal Mart. But,I also know the old local Bakery, Shoe store, and the Toy store are gone. Sure I save a good amount of money. I expect competive prices. By far, most Local Individual owned Christian Book Stores are not any where near 10 percent. Sure CBD sells for big discounts. If you bought a boxcar full of one kind of set of books you could get them at 50 percent off. Volume times actual price plus 40 percent is quite typical for big stores. I would like to know of ANY book store owned by a Mom and Pop that has made 100 percent. I challenge you to prove your words! EdB, you seen like a person who wants to be a good steward of the money God provides. However many Christians are under the same false misunderstanding about how much Christian book sellers make. You can go to the annual Christian Booksellers convention with your Book Store owner friend, and see for yourself. A Christian Book Store is a Ministry, not for much profit. I will add this too, think of all the different denominations there are. The book store tries to keep material that will fit in all these groups. I know I have said that if all these different authors were ever in one place there would an all out battle of words! So EdB, please reconsider you words. agape, justme |

277 | Brand new out of date NASB? | Bible general Archive 1 | justme | 55353
EdB: I really do see your point. I could not agree more about the "christian junk", and I purposefully used the small letter "c" because Christ has nothing to do with these noder day temple coffers! The WWJD stuff is a perfect example! If it's not in your heart, why ware it? In most of our chain Christian Book stores Thomas Kinkade, paintings that have been reprinted by the hundred of thousands are a hig price item. There is Kinkade, cups, pictures, glass trinkets, and so many things done by Kinkade. I would bet one fourth of the store is devoted to this "christian" mega million dollar enterprise. My pet pieve is try and find some really schollary material. You mentioned the Left BEHIND BOOKS. The co autor, according to Hank Hanegrraaf does not believe in the trinity! My opinion is if there wer no book of Revelation Lehey whould have starved! I call this kind of reading "christian junk". How many Christians own an Exhaustive Concordance, or a set of Commentary's? Yet they will have all 27 books of LEFT BEHIND. or however many gets in print. You are very correct to buy a well made genuine leather Bible does cost a lot. I have no objection to CBD or Amazon, or any other place we can save money. We are all faced with choices, abd some we might rather not like to make. A Bible at the local Book store for 89 dollars or the Bible discount Mall for 65 dollars. There is not much to deciede. I do agree, but also see the other side. As for your friend I can not speak for how that is dome. What ever they are doing must be pretty profitable. May I address you feelings on Zondervan. When Mr. Zondervan owned the Company, I can say Mr. Zondervan was A FINE SOILD CHRISTIAN I HIGHLY RESPECTED. When Harper and roe bought Zondervan out in the late eighties, it was a huge change. Many who worked for Zondervan, were paid their full retirement out of Mr. Zondervans personal funds. He had intregrity. The publishing industry has lost many publishing houses in the last decade. The way they print and make books is much faster, and cheaper, and quality is lower. Zondervan/Harper and Roe, are mading a profit, where Zondervan was not. The sane for Broadman and Holman, they united. However Zondervan has is not the only publishing house that has made some real faulty changes to older versions. the New Revised Standard Version is appalling to me. BroadmanHolman prints that. So what are we to do? I will support The Lockman Foundation, and their wonderfull efforts in the NASB update. Published by....Zondervan. I am buying the work done by The Lockman Foundation, printed on better quality materials in genuine leather ans smythe sewn. Like buying at Wal Mart, rather than my local store. If we do not buy the TNIV it will ge gone soon. I wish they would bring back THE OPEN BIBLE in the updated NASB, myself. Thanks for the reply. Agape, justme |

EdB: Dis you know Kirkbride and Zondervan have ties with each other. Kirkbride was the first to come out with the "glue lock" systen when the Thompson Chain NIVfirst came out. That was a real disaster!. I have rebound a couple of old Bibles from 1870ies. It several weeks at 20 hoursa weeek. The work takes lots pf time to align the edges and sew it back by hans. I did this as a gift, and I might do it again. Yest I did buy a 1990's edition. I too found it not anywhere as good as the orignal. Blessings, I feel we have moved much closer to knowing and understanding eacher. This has been a good day. Thank you. agape, justme |

Kalos: you are so rifgt. I have found Oxford, Cambridge, and University to be more inclined to print RSV and more liberal schollary bibles. I have some of each, the binding is super, but the covers are so soft they ware fast. Again Thats only my experience. I think Hank out to have a part in here that says "Asf Hank" what do think? agape, justme |
