241 | Abstaining from things strangled, blood? | Acts 15:20 | Wild Olive Shoot | 192129
So maybe it was given in the spirit of what Paul later wrote? The following as examples: 1Corinthians 10:25-33: v32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: Romans chapter 14 v14 I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. v21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. It comes down to promoting peace and harmony and not offending fellow believers? Am I thinking this through correctly? Stand in His grace, WOS |

Reference to things strangled and blood from v20 below: Are these upheld today as being necessary things and if not, why? Acts 15:19,20: 19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: 20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. Dear cmorgan1107, The Westminster Confession of Faith in Chapter II: Of God, and of the Holy Trinity, explains it this way. III. In the unity of the Godhead there be three Persons of one substance, power, and eternity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. The Father is of none, neither begotten nor proceeding; the Son is eternally begotten of the Father; the Holy Ghost eternally proceeding from the Father and the Son. The following Scripture is cited for reference: Matthew 3:16,17 Matthew 28:19 2 Corinthians 13:14 John 1:14,18 John 15:26 Galatians 4:6 Stand in His grace, WOS |

Luke 4:15-22: 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. 16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. 22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? Acts 17:18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection. Acts 13:15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. Romans 10:4 – 17: 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. 5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. 6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) 7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 15:19-21: 19 Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. 20 Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man's foundation: 21 But as it is written, To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see: and they that have not heard shall understand. |

Emphasis on 2 Timothy 4:2 in answer to the question. "Preach the word". 2Timothy 3:15 - 2Timothy 4:5: 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. |

247 | What was in the cup, wine? | Mark 14:25 | Wild Olive Shoot | 191893
I must apologize then for I thought this was a place to study Scripture and not medicine. In light of that however, you said wine would make the blood of Jesus impure. Does that not make is scriptural, since Scripture focuses on Christ? So I must ask again, where does Scripture, with all of its writing pertaining to wine, make the claim that by drinking it, your blood is not pure? Stand in His grace, WOS |

248 | Scripture alone? | James 1:5 | Wild Olive Shoot | 191883
Dear Parable, Probably not a good “game” to participate in. Most of us realize that Scripture not taken in context can be very dangerous and I’ll refer to Christ’s temptation in the wilderness where satan used Scripture out of context to tempt our Lord. So although you should maybe be commended for your efforts to keep study interesting with ways anew and enlightening, this effort may fall short of achieving that purpose and actually be harmful for some. Matthew 4:1-11: 1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. The drinking of wine is not condemned biblically, however drunkenness is. Why would wine make ones blood impure? Can you show me this with Scripture? Dear hunt8873, Matthew Henry wrote regarding 2 Corinthians 9:7: “Due deliberation, as to this matter of our own circumstances, and those of the persons we are about to relieve, will be very helpful to direct us how liberal we should be in our contributions for charitable uses.” – Matthew Henry If your heart is not in it, and the giving is anything less than cheerful and voluntary, I would suppose that it would offend God. Pertaining to the verses you asked about, I think you may be referring to Malachi. Malachi 3:8-12: 8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. 10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. 11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts. 12 And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts. Staying with Mr. Henry, he writes: “It is fit that we should venture first, for his reward is with him, but his work is before him; we must first do the work which is our part, and then try him and trust him for the reward. Elijah put the widow of Zarephath into this method when he said (1Ki_17:13), “Make me a little cake first, and then prove me whether there shall not be enough afterwards for thee and thy son.” That which discourages people from the expenses of charity is the weakness of their faith concerning the gains and advantages of charity; they cannot think that they shall get by it. But it is a reasonable demand that God here makes: “Prove me now; is any thing to be got by charity? Come and see;” Nothing venture, nothing win. Trust upon honour, “And you shall find,” [1.] “That, whereas the heavens have been shut up, and there has been no rain, now God will open to you the windows of heaven, for in his hand the key of the clouds is, and you shall have seasonable rain.” – Matthew Henry It was the law that required the tithes and offerings for numerous implied and suggested reasons and this was not being upheld for very numerous and presumptuous reasons. John Calvin said” "liberality is estimated by God, not so much from the sum, as from the disposition." What you give should be from your heart, and be willing to do so and gladly. There is no law requiring it. What God has given you, Himself, in His Son and His Spirit, should have you wanting to eagerly and cheerfully give. So do so as you can. I heard it said that the benefits of giving actually outweigh the sacrifice of giving. But I think you can add to that, only if the giving is from the heart and not out of compulsion. 252 | Questioning God. | James 1:1 | Wild Olive Shoot | 190929
Yes to the question you opened your response with. So why is it when you answered initially, you quoted James 1:5 which deals with a believer asking God for wisdom? I think you know there is a difference, you're simply either confusing them or wanting to debate something you agree with. Again, asking for wisdom and questioning God's will are two different things, I thought I said that already. “It is implied that people are opposed to the ways which God takes to govern the world; it is affirmed that calamity shall follow all the resistance which people shall make. This we shall follow, because, first, God has all power, and all who contend with him must be defeated and overthrown; and, secondly, because God is right, and the sinner who opposes him is wrong, and must and will be punished for his resistance.” – John Gill “If God is our Father, where is the honour we owe to him by submitting to his will?” – Matthew Henry Continue to ask for God’s wisdom but know there is a fine line between Honoring God and asking for His wisdom to conform to His will and being downright disrespectful in murmuring “why me Lord” or “why them”. I think it comes down to this, petition God for an answer through his Wisdom, don’t demand one. The questioned asked should be “what of me”, “not why me”. Romans 9:20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Jeremiah 18:6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel. Proverbs 16:4 The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil. God’s sovereignty gives him the absolute right to do as He pleases for His own pleasure. We have no right to question that. We do have the privilege of asking what we shall do to conform to His will. Yes, big difference. I’ll give you the last response should you choose. 253 | Questioning God. | James 1:1 | Wild Olive Shoot | 190920
Val, Asking for wisdom to help you through your trials and questioning the Almighty are two very different things indeed. The first you are expected to do as pointed out by your post of James 1:5. The latter you are reproved for doing as Paul wrote to the Romans. Romans 9:20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? It is never wrong to ask for God’s wisdom but so very wrong to question His will. Isaiah 45:9 Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands? Stand in His grace, WOS |

254 | Bad things, Good People. Prov 4:10 | Prov 4:10 | Wild Olive Shoot | 190911
Dear Val, I’d answer your question with a few. Starting with: Did Christ deserve to be crucified? John the Baptist surely wasn’t a bad man when his head was given to the daughter of Herodias? Was Stephen a bad man when he was stoned to death? When James was beheaded, was this because he was a bad man? When Paul was suffering and pleaded with God to remove “the thorn in his side”, was he to be considered a bad man? These are simply a few examples, but throughout God’s word we see good men, heroes, kings, prophets, apostles and disciples suffering. The fact of the matter is, as angelinwaiting pointed out, all of this was according to God’s will. With a sovereign God, nothing happens outside of His knowledge. He is in total control at all times. We aren’t meant to understand it all, and don’t imagine we ever could this side of glory. I’d ask you to keep in mind the following when attempting to ponder why in fact some good people do suffer. Was not our Savior good and perfect? In the garden when He was about to suffer, not for anything He brought upon Himself, but for you and me, the ones who truly deserve the punishment, He is quoted as stating: “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” Be thankful that a gracious and glorious God is sovereign and that He gave His only begotten Son. 256 | Did people call "our Father" in prayer? | Matt 6:9 | Wild Olive Shoot | 190008
Dear 00123, I’ve read the following that I found interesting regarding your question and wanted to share. An excerpt from the 2007 June issue of Tabletalk magazine http://www.ligonier.org/tt_rightnowcountsforever.php “The German scholar Joachim Jeremias has argued that in almost every prayer that Jesus utters in the New Testament, He addresses God as Father. Jeremias notes that this represents a radical departure from Jewish custom and tradition. Though Jewish people were given a lengthy number of appropriate titles for God in personal prayer, significantly absent from the approved list was the title “Father.” God has only one child, His only-begotten Son, the monogençs, which restricts this filial relationship to Christ. We do not have the natural right to call God “Father.” That right is bestowed upon us only through God’s gracious work of adoption. This is an extraordinary privilege, that those who are in Christ now have the right to address God in such a personal, intimate, filial term as “Father.” Therefore, we ought never to take for granted this unspeakable privilege bestowed upon us by God’s grace. We note in the Lord’s Prayer that Jesus instructs us that now when we pray, we are to refer to God as “Our Father.” Again the “ourness” of this relationship is grounded in the unique ministry of Jesus by which, through adoption, He is our elder brother and He gives to us those privileges that by nature belong only to Him. Now, by adopting us, He says that we may regard God, not only as His Father, but as our Father.” – R. C. Sproul ©2007 Ligonier Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Stand in His grace, WOS |

258 | Imortant Question Of Life Situation | Eph 4:3 | Wild Olive Shoot | 189871
ddethdan, I hope the following is helpful. Faith in Christ is the key. Our love of Him and of others is able to smash the barriers we have put in place by our arrogance and tradition throughout history. Walk worthy of the calling my friend. Personally, I know Baptist’s who have a true love for their savior as well as Pentecostal’s. Wherever you may end up, remember this, focus on the Word of God, there you’ll find the truth. Ephesians 4:1-7: 1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, 2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. “Observe, Christians ought to accommodate themselves to the gospel by which they are called, and to the glory to which they are called; both are their vocation. We are called Christians; we must answer that name, and live like Christians. We are called to God's kingdom and glory; that kingdom and glory therefore we must mind, and walk as becomes the heirs of them.” – Matthew Henry “This unity of the Spirit is caused by a similarity of nature. Find a drop of water glittering in the rainbow, leaping in the waterfall, rippling in the rivulet, lying silent in the stagnant pool or dashing in spray against the vessel’s side—that water claims kinship with every drop of water the wide world over because it is the same in its elements. And even so there is a unity of the Spirit which we cannot imitate which consists in our being begotten again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” – C. H. Spurgeon “A Church that would keep the unity of the Spirit, again, must not consider itself to be so infallible that not to belong to its membership is sin. What right has any one Church to set itself up as the standard, so that those who do not join it are necessarily Dissenters? It is true my Episcopal brother is a Dissenter—he dissents from me! It is true he is a Nonconformist, for he does not conform to me—I would not, however, call him by such names lest I should arrogate to my own Church to be the one true church and so should break the unity of the Spirit.” – C. H. Spurgeon “Let us meet on equal ground! Let us lay aside all pretences to superiority! Let us really aid and not oppress each other! Let us mingle in prayer. Let us unite in confession of sin. Let us join heartily in reforming our errors and a true Evangelical Alliance will cover our land! If any church will take the Bible as its standard and in the power of the Spirit of God preach the name of Jesus, there are thousands of us who will rejoice to give the right hand of fellowship with a hearty greeting to all such!” – C. Dear Christian 2003, Hank's response to you was on the mark. No need for any others. But just as encouragement for some of the other answers you may receive will be off the mark, please read the following. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. “Never has a prayer ascended to God save through Jesus Christ. Never has a blessing come down to man save through the same Divine Mediator. There is now a highway, a way of holiness wherein the redeemed can walk to God, and God can come to us. The king's highway” – C. H. Spurgeon “no man cometh unto the Father but by me; Christ is the only way of access unto the Father; there is no coming to God as an absolute God, not upon the foot of the covenant of works, nor without a Mediator; and the only Mediator between God and man is Christ: he introduces and presents the persons and services of his people to his Father, and gives them acceptance with him.” – John Gill 1Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; …”according to Paul, Christ's giving himself a ransom was a necessary part of the Mediator's office; and indeed this lays the foundation for his intercession.” – Matthew Henry Ephesians 2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Ephesians 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; “in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; for all the mercies of God's people, both temporal and spiritual, come through him, and for his sake; and thanksgivings for them are only acceptable to God as they are offered up by him; nor is there any other way of bringing them to God, but through him:” – John Gill “In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ - That is, through his mediation, or trusting in him;” – Albert Barnes Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
