241 | How can I deal with satan showing hiself | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 116445
Your experience sounds very much like a nightmare, a phenomenon common to almost everyone. Everyone I've ever discussed it with has experienced nightmares at one time or another. If the problem persists and interferes with your sleep and peace of mind, I'd suggest you consult a qualified professional. This is not the kind of problem that can be dealt with professionally on a forum such as this. --Hank
242 | Praying for my husband | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 116734
At the beginning of your post you say that your husband is a born-again believer. At the end of it you say that you are going to pray for him until he is transformed. Do have some doubts about his faith? Does he? No one on this Forum can tell you why your husband is, in your words, "cranky and grumpy." Perhaps a quiet, loving heart-to-heart talk (not a bitter argument) between you and him would do no harm. A caring friend or pastor might also help. But, you see, I refrain from trying to give specific advice and advise you not to put much stock in any advice you get on a forum like this that tries to relate to your particular situation. It's most unwise to do so. I do pray that things go well for you and your husband. --Hank
243 | HONOR THY SABBATH | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 116943
In the first place, please don't shout at us :-) by typing in all capital letters. In the second place, are you attempting to make a statement or ask as question? In the third place, I happen to be a member of the SBC (Southern Baptist) myself and disagree vigorously with your unsupported-by-Scripture opinion that "growing up in a Southern Baptist Church was not correct." And in the fourth place, if you're coming to the Forum to soap-box the keeping of the Old Testament Sabbath, the Forum has been exposed amply to that, and you may wish to avail yourself of some of it by using Search and the search word sabbath. --Hank
244 | 700 Club supports Benny Hinn! How ? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 117257
justme: There's no doubting from these parts that Benny Hinn is a slick customer, and I don't mean just his hairdo, the maintaince on which would problably keep a family of four in groceries the whole year round. It's fairly easy to see how Pat Robertson could be taken in by Benny's Cheshire grin. Well do I remember the early years of the 700 Club and the much younger Pat Robertson who claimed to possess such extra-sensory perception that he "saw" a lame man being healed in Detroit or a woman with terminal cancer being restored in Miami "at this very moment" and broadcast the assurance to them and to his audience that these miracles were taking place as he spoke. He seems to have toned down somewhat in his mellower, older years. Age may have taken the edge off his former flamboyance, but he and Benny really are cut from the same piece of cloth. I'm therefore not particularly surprised to hear of Pat's endorsement of Benny the Hinn. It's that old deja vu all over again, as Yogi Berra used to say. It's the birds of a feather syndrome. --Hank
245 | Why do yo say JW's are a cult? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 117339
Aniset: EdB in Post 117335 and Steve (srbaegon) in Post 117308 have given you clear, biblically-referenced reasons why Jehovah's Witnesses constitute a cult. Why do you not consider them a cult, if that is your position? Now I don't have any intention of firing up a debate between orthodox Christians on this Forum and you. But just this onnce, for the sake of the record, please state briefly, clearly and biblically why JW is not a cult. Be sure your comments include a straightforward yes-or-no answer to the following question: Is Jesus God? --Hank
246 | 700 Club supports Benny Hinn! How ? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 117342
justme: I thought you and other Forum readers might be interested that Pat Robertson's website (CBN/700 Club) has a glowing article today about Benny Hinn's "Miracle Crusade" in India. The URL is www.cbn.com/700club/profiles/Benny_Hinn_04.asp ..... Incidentally, the Benny has been awared an honorary doctorate from Oral Roberts University (ORU). Another plume from the feathers of these birds who continue to flock together. --Hank
247 | Discerning bad fruit and apostasy | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 117466
Bea: If you'd like to read more, pro and con, about Pat Robertson, his beliefs, business dealings and organizational activities and affiliations, go to a search engine and type in his name. I used Google and it turned up more than I really wanted to know about him! Personally, my allegiance and support are poured largely into my local church, and I look at all media preachers very carefully before before I endorse them. Some are good. Many aren't. --Hank
248 | Bible version can become an idol? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 117502
Lorenzo: The passage you may have in mind is John 5:39, in which Jesus addresses the Jewish leaders, "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about me." Jesus points out that with all their diligent scrutiny in studying the Scriptures to find eternal life, these learned Jews failed miserably in their understanding of the true and only way to eternal life, which is through Him, the Son of God. ..... I don't believe I'd call a particular fondness for a Bible translation idolatry, but I would call an extreme fixation on a particular version, such as the KJV Onlyists seem to have, a pronounced fetish that can lead to all sorts of bizarre things, such as wholesale condemnation of all other English versions and an absurd and unfounded belief that the KJV translators were divinely inspired and thus totally inerrant in every word of their translation. This is not idolatry; it's plain foolishness. --Hank

Revelation 13 would seem to indicate that there are 12 revelations before it. --Hank
250 | 2 co-habit or not 2 co-habit | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 118753
bill kane: Are you serious? The kind of relationship that you describe strains credulity. A man and woman who cohabit in the same household, share a double bed, have an intense friendship and companionship, yet have no wish to be married to each other and have no sexual relationship with one another -- even if this is a real situation and not a hypothetical one, who among their neighbors and fellow church members is going to believe it? What would this extremely odd cohabitation do to their witness as followers of Christ? What is there about this situation, given the intensity of affection and intimacy you describe, of living together and sharing the same bed, that precludes marriage? Economic considerations, sexual dysfunction, or what? These are really rhetorical questions and no answer is anticipated. Some Bible verses you may wish to study are Genesis 2:24, and perhaps you may be enlightened by the principle laid down by Paul in 1 Cor. 8:8-13 concerning stumbling blocks, even though in this instance he was addressing the specific issue of eating meat. And Jeus said, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden...Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 5:14,16). The follower of Christ has the mighty and awesome guidance of the Holy Spirit through the instrumentality of the Scriptures. He has the precious privilege of going to the throne of grace in prayer. He can avail himself of the collective wisdom, succor and counsel of God's people, the church. But ultimately the terrible burden of choice falls on his shoulders. He must choose the course he will take. --Hank

Shadow: I have written many posts on the topic of the Trinity. See 62308 as an example. To access it, go to Quick Search on the top right of your screen and type in 62308. Other users have written reliable posts on the Trinity as well, but an equal if not greater number have written confusing, unscriptural, and misleading posts on this topic. To read other posts on this topic that are reliable, go to Search at the top left of your screen and type in such user names as kalos, EdB, Makarios, Morant61, Emmaus BradK, Refomer Joe, Hank, srbaegon, CDBJ, and in the space below type in doctrine Trinity. --Hank
252 | Why are some people being disrespectful? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 119385
When you find someone not capitalizing the names of Deity, including pronouns referring to them, point it out to Ray and tell him "Sic 'em, Ray." Believe me, Ray knows how to handle these creatures :-) Some posters write as if their keyboards don't have a shift key or they don't know how to use it. A few engage the caps lock and shout at us. I know not whence came the notion that corresponding on the Internet gives one the license to violate all rules of syntax including punctuation, capitalization, grammar and writing a sentence that contains at least a subject and a verb and makes at least minimal sense. ..... Concerning user names, yes, there have been some wild ones that show, if not contempt, poor taste. --Hank
253 | ref. to today's Christmas tree-rebuking | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 120074
daylight: The scriptural passage you are trying to recall is probably Jeremiah 10:3,4 which has been interpreted to be referring to Christmas trees. Chapter 10 of Jeremiah, however, is a satire on idolatry and has nothing to do with Christmas trees or the modern custom of decorating them during the season of Advent. The context supports that idolatry, not Christmas trees, is the subject of God's message to the house of Israel. --Hank
254 | What nonsense is this? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 120112
EdB: I've read thousands of posts to this Forum and never ceased to be amazed at how many of them, purporting to be profound, are nothing but sterling examples of obscure, nonsensical gibberish. One should think that users would at least take the time and exert the effort to proofread their work before they post it. I've seen posts run the limit of words that are allowed for a single post without saying anything of importance. Ben Franklin gave some wise advice to a verbose young friend who was fond of writing long, flowery letters that said very little. To one of these letters Franklin responded curtly, "Young man, take time to write a short letter." Indeed, Franklin hit the mark squarely: It takes more time -- and a great deal more thought -- to write concise, meaningful prose than it does to ramble through many pages of flowery nonsense. --Hank
255 | Are christians promised 70 years of life | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 120571
Sharon: Scripture doesn't promise 70 years of mortal life to Christian or pagan; you have been searching for something that doesn't exist, as Kalos has pointed out. You might suggest to your friend to stop worrying about length of life on earth and concentrate on the Bible's promise of eternal life to followers of Christ! Quote John 3:16 to your friend and ask your friend to quote the passage that promises 70 years of mortal life. :-) ..... It's remarkable how these folk tales that are passed off as biblical truisms are perpetuated by one generation to another. I remember hearing the three-score-and-ten (70 years) story when I was a kid and that was nearly three score and ten years ago! And anyone who lived beyond 70 was said to be living on borrowed time. That has a practical appeal to me now, because next year if I live to see it, I will turn 70 and will need to see about taking out a loan. Does anyone know where or from whom I might borrow some time? --Hank
256 | How should I study? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 120713
Dear Christian, young in the faith, you will find no better guide to God's word than God Himself! Therefore, the sine qua non of Bible study is to make prayer an integral part of it. Pray for a humble and contrite spirit that is unfettered by human opinion and preconceived ideas and speculations, but open and eager to learn God's truth; pray for spiritual discernment; pray that your study may be fruitful and inviolable to the vagaries and vicissitudes that flesh is heir to which militate against right understanding of spiritual truth. There are a thousand ways to aid and enhance your study of Scripture. You have been given some of them, and good ones at that, by other members of the Forum. These tools and approaches will help you. But to my mind the greatest of these is prayer. "Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law." [Psalm 119:8]. --Hank

260 | People from teh bible | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 121115
Biblegrix: The people you include in your roster are characters from the pages of Scripture, except Pentateuch. Pentateuch and Torah were identical twins. The Pentateuch and the Torah are not people. They are books -- the first five books of the Old Testament. If you have a Bible dictionary handy, that would be a good place to start your research about Bible characters. The dictionary will tell you where to go in Scripture to read up on these people. Or you might try using a Bible concordance. --Hank
