Bible Question: Are christians promised seventy years of life? A friend of mine told me that seventy years of life was promised if we live according to the Word, but I cannot find it anywhere. The only reference I found was Psalms 90:10, and that doesn't sound like a promise to me. |
Bible Answer: Sharon: Scripture doesn't promise 70 years of mortal life to Christian or pagan; you have been searching for something that doesn't exist, as Kalos has pointed out. You might suggest to your friend to stop worrying about length of life on earth and concentrate on the Bible's promise of eternal life to followers of Christ! Quote John 3:16 to your friend and ask your friend to quote the passage that promises 70 years of mortal life. :-) ..... It's remarkable how these folk tales that are passed off as biblical truisms are perpetuated by one generation to another. I remember hearing the three-score-and-ten (70 years) story when I was a kid and that was nearly three score and ten years ago! And anyone who lived beyond 70 was said to be living on borrowed time. That has a practical appeal to me now, because next year if I live to see it, I will turn 70 and will need to see about taking out a loan. Does anyone know where or from whom I might borrow some time? --Hank |
