Hi, New Creature: Now please believe me, I come not to pooh pooh your question or speak disparagingly of it. Still and all, I do wonder whether theologians sometimes lead us to think that to become a follower of Christ is in some ways more complex than it is. Regeneration, repentance, faith, salvation, conviction of sin -- these are heady terms to the theologian -- so much so that whole books have been written on each one. When I became a follower of Christ 55 years ago, I was a lad of 14. I had no idea of the order of the things such as are on your list. Fact is, I would have been hard pressed to give a proper "theologically correct" definition of any of the items. I had what one could call a "working knowledge" I suppose of faith: I believed that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He died to save sinners, and I believed in my heart that I was a sinner (conviction by the Spirit). I wanted to live a life pleasing to the Lord (repentance). I trusted Jesus to save me. (salvation) I had never heard the word regeneration and thus had no idea of its existence, let alone its meaning. But this much I knew: John 3:16. And Acts 16:30,31. John 3:16 is enormously well known, but let's quote it here anyway. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life." ...... And I love the simplicity and directness of Paul's and Silas' answer to the Philippian jailer who asked them, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." (Acts 16:30,31). ...... When I was 14, I gave no thought at all to the order in which these wonderful life-changing things occurred, because I didn't know they all existed. About all I knew then was that if I believed in the Lord Jesus, I would be saved. That's about all I know now. I did believe. I was saved. I still believe. I'm still saved. I suppose God took care of the other details and put them in proper order. --Hank

geof: A readily-available resource for you would be an edition of the Bible that contains an introduction, and usually an outline, of each book. These introductions vary in length and quality. If you feel that you need more guidance in selecting a copy, check with your pastor or a knowledgeable sales person at a Bible bookstore. --Hank

293 | Best bible to buy in Large print bible | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 133421
Hello, Cindy. You came to a good place for help in finding a Bible! Just click on "Find A Bible" at the top of the screen and follow the directions. The one I use and recommend is the NASB Single-Column, Wide-Margin, Side-Reference Bible. The font is 11 points and it is very clear and easy to read. NASB also comes in a giant print which is, I believe, 14 points, but frankly I find the 11 point quite adequate and easy on the eyes -- better actually than the giant print. Suggestion: Get the genuine leather binding instead of the bonded leather. Or if economy is an issue, go with the hardcover edition. This Bible also comes in a sumptuous, soft, and supple calfskin binding -- if you really want to pamper yourself, get one of those. I did and love it. One more word. This single-column reference NASB is published by Foundation Publications, the publishing arm of the Lockman Foundation. Lockman still sews the pages into the book's spine instead of slapping a gob of glue on them as most Bible publishers are doing these days. This sewing process not only lets the book lie flat when open but it extends the average life of the book considerably. --Hank
294 | Is it biblical? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 134110
believer 2004: Your post is posed as a question, but it is in fact nothing more than a statement of your opinion. If you want to ask a question, please do and try to make it biblically oriented. It has been pointed out several times by a number of long-time users of this web site that this Forum is a forum for Bible study. It is not a place for venting political opinion or discussing current political issues. Issues such as abortion, the gay agenda, etc. have emerged as political issues to be sure, but they are also biblical issues and hence proper on a Bible study medium such as this Forum; but extended debate and discussion about candidates and their political parties is not. Forum guidelines forbid this sort of activity and seasoned users of this Forum stand firmly against it, not out of prejudice as you suggest, but out of a concerted effort to keep this Forum on track by keeping it centered on Bible study and nothing else. Please accept the rules of this Forum and abide by them. If you wish to make political statements, there are probably other web sites that would welcome your input, but not this one. --Hank

297 | pray together and you shall stay 2-gethe | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 134964
No, there is no Scripture that says in so many words that "a family that prays together stays together." That's a man-made slogan but not necessarily an untrue one by any means. There is a wonderful passage of Scripture (Deuteronomy 6:1-9) that speaks mightily of saturating oneself and one's family with the word of God. When the family is united in the study of God's word, when the father, in the words of Deuteronomy 6:2, teaches it diligently to his sons, talks of it when he is sitting in his house and walking by the way, and when he lies down and when he rises up -- when a father and his family are thus centered on the word of God, and when all the family in unision lift their voices to God in fervent prayer, the godly tie that binds them together waxes stronger than the forces of evil that seek to divide them. I believe that the family who study the word of God together and who pray together will in all likelihood stay together and grow stronger and more loving with every passing day. But how many families who would like to be known as Christian families actually set aside some family time every day to study the Bible and pray together? A few generations ago it was commonplace for Christian parents to teach their children how to read by guiding them in the reading of the Bible. I submit that it is far better in every way for a child to learn to read by reading Scripture than by reading Harry Potter. Neither adult nor child can take from a written page more than the author has put there. Who has put more on a page, the author of Harry Potter or the Author of Scripture? --Hank
298 | Help! | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 135043
Neither this web site nor e-mails from strangers promise a solution to your situation that you describe as desperate. On the contrary, any advice you receive from strangers on the internet is more likely to exacerbate your problem than to solve it. Seek help within your community from responsible people who are qualified to offer assistance in personal relationships -- preferably people you know and and who know you. In the interests of your own safety please be extremely cautious about revealing personal information to strangers on the internet. Every good wish for a satisfactory resolution of your dilemma. --Hank
299 | WHY WE ASSOCIATE OUR SELF TO A CHURH | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 135046
OMOIFE - A reading of the book of Acts strongly suggests that early Christians tended to identify themselves with local churches who met at regular intervals at a specific place. One has only to think how ineffective it would be to carry on the Lord's work if every Christian including pastors and other church leaders were perpetual floaters who bounced around from church to church all the time. What an organizational and logistical nightmare that would be. ..... Your second question asks why we have so many churches instead of one? Well, we have too many people to fit into one church, I suppose. :-) ..... Obviously you're asking about denominations and why there are so many of them. This is too large a question to be tackled within the space limitations of a forum post. Why don't you visit your public or church library, or a Bible bookstore, and ask for help in selecting resource material on the origin and history of denominations. There is no shortage of material that can enable you to broaden your knowledge and understanding of this subject. Learning about other communions may indeed give you a broader perspective on your own. It's a worthwhile study. It's truly astonishing how many professing Christians have little idea of the origin and history of their own communion, much less of any other. --Hank
300 | identifying modalism: church prevalence? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 135531
Dear Reighnskye - Keeping all the "isms" sorted out in our minds and clearly defined is quite a trick, isn't it? .... Modalism maintains that there is one God who manifests Himself successively as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit but who is not contemporaneously all three. Modalism is one of the three basic errors into which men have frequently fallen with reference to the doctrine of God. The other two are called Subordinationism and Tritheism. Subordinationism views the Son and the Holy Spirit as essentially and eternally subordinate to the Father. Tritheism asserts that there are three gods rather than one God who is three Persons. ..... Triunity (Trinity) is wholly scriptural and is the doctrine held by orthodox Christians for centuries. It is the distinctive and essentiall Christian doctrine that there is one God in three Persons. The Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. There is a distinction between the Persons so that the Father is not the Son, the Father is not the Spirit, and the Son is not the Spirit. Each is a Person . The Holy Spirit is not to be envisioned as a mere force or influence. An example of this theological blunder regarding the Spirit may be found in the teachings of the Watchtower cult. They also embrace their own peculiarly skewered brand of Subordinationism. ..... Sorry, but I have no really clear idea of how prevalent modalism is in our time. I know it's an earmark of the Oneness Pentecostals, and of some Unitarian groups, and of a few other small sects. Where in the world do you get all your complex questions? :-) --Hank
