BCharo: Correction: The riddle and its answer are to be found in Post 78467, by my good friend and Christian brother, Tim Moran. Tim made a typo in his reference of the post number, a rare thing for him, and one witch I myshelf nevvr mAke! :-) --Hank

gawdzdice: While we await a clarification of your question requested by kalos, permit me to question the meaning of your user name, i.e., "gawdzdice". I read it as a corruption of "God's dice" -- a name not quite fitting to a Bible Forum -- but I stand to be corrected. --Hank

cutie_1890: I'm not promoting a crash course on the subject of "God" by any means, but you might try this. Go to "Get Bible Text" and type in the single word, God. Of the 31,101 verses in the Bible, 4,085 of them contain the word "God" in the NASB text. Long before you've exhausted the list of 4,085 verses, you should have a fair idea of who God is. --Hank

266 | church | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 123679
Mike - Try www.sbc.net/bfm/bfm2000.asp. Does this statement of faith reflect yours? If it does, align yourself with a conservative local church that has a high view of Scripture and rejects humanism, post modernism, and such other adulterations of the gospel of Christ as the Word of Faith Movement. It could be a "denominational" church or a "non-demoninational" church -- the "label" is not nearly so important as what the church believes, teaches, and practices. That's the advice I'd give to you if you were my own son or brother. --Hank
267 | King James bible only one to read? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 123690
Sunset: The burden of proof is on your neighbor, not you, to show that the KJV is the only Bible fit to read. There exists a cult-like group who teach that the KJV is a singularly inspired and inerrant translation and that all other translations are made by New Age groups with evil intents to deceive by distorting God's word. These King James Onlyists, as they are called, can back their half-baked notions with no credible facts or evidence. Many of the adherents to King James Onlyism have written books and articles that purport to justify their claims. I've read many of them, and among the ones I've read, there isn't a one of them which I'd rate more dignified than unfiltered blarney. --Hank

justme: The distinguished clergyman who with grace and eloquence delivered words of consolation to the family and friends of President Ronald Reagan at the sunset burial service in Simi Valley, California was Dr. Michael Wenning, age 68, now retired, whose last pastorate was at the Bel Air Presbyterian Church near the Reagan ranch. --Hank

Chusarcik: The study of the nations of Genesis 10 is fascinating but can be a bit confusing. If you own or can get your hands on a Scofield, you may benefit from his notes on Genesis 10. Scofield names Japheth as the progenitor of Europe, or at least parts of it. --Hank
271 | Jehovah's Witness Question | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 124591
Dadda, yes the Jehovah's Witnesses are a sect and not Christian, inasmuch as they deny the full deity of Jesus Christ. You are yet a babe in Christ. Stick to orthodoxy and avoid for now getting involved with Witnesses. They are masters of deceit and you, as a new Christian, are vulnerable to their sugar-coated lies. --Hank

275 | joyful noise? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 124915
rjcbp: Duck! Here's comes the pedant! How do you make a "quiet noise"? Or what does a "deafening silence" sound like? Both are examples of rhetorical figures called oxymorons. The one characteristic of a noise is that it's noisy! Do you remember this classic of alliteration: "What kind of a noise annoys an oyster? And the answer is: "A noisy noise annoys an oyster." No, I'm afraid that in order to make a joyful noise unto the Lord we're going to have to exercise our vocal chords. What's wrong with a good, hearty shout of praise to the Lord now and then? ..... Or to punctuating a stirring hymn with a very vocal Amen? ..... Once upon a time an old farmer and his wife retired and moved into the city, changing their church attendance from a laid-back country church where they felt free to "Amen" whatever touched their hearts, to a far more reserved and formal city church. During their first visit to the city church they did quite a bit of Amen-ing, and at the conclusion of the service were met by a couple of leaders of the city church. They were told that they were welcome but advised to remain quiet during the worship service. "This church frowns on all this "Amen" stuff," said the church leaders to the farmer and his wife. "But we've got religion," said the farmer to the church leaders. And the church leaders said to the farmer and his wife, "Well, you certainly didn't get it here." --Hank
276 | do i have to worship loudly? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 124926
rjcbp: If you are a Baptist, you know that Baptists don't teach a works-based soteriology -- and neither does Scripture! Perhaps it's time to invite your son's friend in for a Bible lesson on what salvation is and how it comes about. (I gather that your son's friend is also in his teens?) Read Ephesians 2:8-10 to him. Explain to him that God's plan of salvation is based from start to finish on grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Works have nothing to do with it. It matters not how much shouting one does, how loudly he sings, or how fast he dances around the pulpit. Whether one shouts loudly enough to vibrate the roof off the church house or sits still as a mouse in the church pew makes not an iota of difference in his salvation. How did Paul and Silas answer the Philippian jailor (Acts 16:30,31) who asked them, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" Did Paul and Silas say to him, "Well, the best way we know of is to sing and shout to the top of your voice, jump up and down, dance around, and act as if you had a severe disorder of the central nervous system." You know better than that, and so should your son's friend. Here's what Paul and Silas said to the jailor: "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." I believe that while I was at it, I'd also reprimand your son's friend for his pertness, presumption, and his patently false teaching about salvation. Sounds to me like he needs his ears pinned back and perhaps an attitude adjustment to go along with it. My patience wears thin with misguided and ill-informed self-proclaimed know-it-alls who delight in passing judgment on others. --Hank
277 | Playing Cards | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 125049
There is to my knowledge nothing in Scripture that could be exegeted as condemning a friendly game of cards. Or horseshoes, soccor, tennis, golf, baseball, Scrabble, chess, or hide and seek. --Hank
278 | Should a Christian be a Democrat? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 125298
Justme: I make no secret of the fact that I'm a registered Republican. This is how I stand on the matter: I will not cast my vote for any candidate or political party that supports issues and measures which the word of God clearly condemns. --Hank

280 | Can I help you? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 126775
Stultis the Fool: Thanks for asking me if you can help me in any way. It was a kind gesture, but off-hand I can't think of any way that you could help me. By the way, how do you feel that I need help, and why might you think you're able to help me? (If I think of any way you can help, I'll be sure to let you know.) .......... I do have a few comments about your post. In it you say, "Jesus chose appropriately, and Grace was not yet with us when he did so." What does this mean? .......... You say, "...free will plays the most important role." I'm at a loss to find a scriptural reference for this. Where does the Bible mention man's "free will" and where does it say that man's free will plays the most important role -- in anything? ....... You say, "We have every capacity to choose between right and wrong." Where does the Bible teach this? ....... Did you read the 13 passages of Scripture that I submitted to you in my former post? Did you study them? Do you believe them? Would you care to comment on whether you read them and what effect, if any, they have on your thinking about man's sinful condition. Let's stick with what Scripture says. My opinion, precious soul, is worthless -- as worthless as any other man's. God's word is the only thing that counts, for it is priceless. Adieu. --Hank
