joel - The empathy of one salesman for another comes out, and I must say this to you, with apologies to the rest of the Forum and Lockman for digressing somewhat from the theme of this Forum. .... Your story touches my heart in a special way, for I began my sales and later, sales management, career as a flop and total failure. In fact I was fired from my first sales job and my manager told me I wasn't "cut out" to be a salesman. I was utterly crushed and defeated. I went home, a dingy little garage apartment, during the middle of the day, got in bed and pulled the sheet over my face and cried like a baby. Later it dawned on me to pray for myself and my family. My prayer produced no measurable results that I could see. For several days I moped around in a daze. One day I saw an ad in the local newspaper that sounded good. An insurance company wanted an "ambitious, self-motivated, aggressive" agent to represent them. I applied. They put me through a battery of aptitude tests. I flunked them all. The test resuls indicated I had no aptitude for the job. A few days later a high-school friend dropped by. He was driving a new Oldsmobile and was dressed in a natty business suit. He was in the insurance business. I told him I'd tried to get a job with an insurance company but they didn't want me because I didn't pass their tests. He told me to talk with his manager. "Does your company give an aptitude test?" I asked. He told me no, they don't believe aptitude tests do any good. So I went to see my friend's manager. He took me on, mainly on the recommendation of my high-school buddy. The first full year with that company I led the entire agency of some 60 men in sales and continued in the insurance business for 40 years. I am now retired, but I still miss the job that I loved and succeeded at, even though I never was "cut out" to be a salesman and didn't have the "aptitude" for it! :-) It would be hard, dear Joel, for anyone to convince me that God didn't answer the prayer I prayed over 40 years ago after I came home, dejected and feeling alone, a worthless and abject failure, crying in my bed because I didn't know what else to do or where to turn. Keep the faith, friend, and keep praying. Trust in the Lord. He will make a way in His good time. You are in my thoughts and prayers. --Hank
202 | to hank ... thank you | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 103030
joel - You're very welcome and I hope my words will be of some comfort and help to you. .... Oddly enough, in my long sales and management career, I rarely experienced an encounter with anyone who seemed to think I was a liar out to part them from their money. ..... I can honestly give you nothing more than a general, generic sort of answer to your question about civil punishment for wrongdoing. I believe that it is the duty of every citizen to obey the law of the land so long as it does not clearly conflict with the law of God; and that justice should be served on those who do not obey the law. But I don't really want to enter into a broad discussion of civil disobedience or anything of that sort. --Hank

204 | Holy Spirit question on mysterious ways | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 103900
Cliff, possibly what you are thinking about is a line from British poet William Cowper (1731-1800) that reads as follows: "God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform; He plants His footsteps in the sea and rides upon the storm." --Hank
205 | why should i bring people | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 104317
Buddy - Wow! Did you eat a lemon before you posted? :-) "The public they suck" surely is a sour note and not one that Christ would play and neither should His followers. Are you a Christian, Buddy? If you do profess Christ as your Lord and Savior, Buddy, you really should ponder His clear teaching in Matthew 22:34-40. There is no excuse for a Christian to have such an uncharitable attitude toward his fellow human beings that he would say "the public they suck." By the way, in case you don't feel disposed to look up the reference I gave, it concerns Jesus' discourse with a Pharisee who asked Him which is the great commandment in the Law. Here's how Jesus answered that question: "'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND'. This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'" ..... You see, Buddy, Christianity is, as you say, "a personal relationship with God, me and God thing" -- but it is also clearly a "me and my neighbor thing." In fact, it is so much or a "me and my neighbor thing" that God won't forgive us our transgressions unless we forgive others. See Matthew 6:14,15. Buddy, please bear in mind that when we have such an attitude as "the public they suck" we are really pointing a finger at ourselves. For we, friend, are also members of "the public." I do wish you well. --Hank

joel k - May I remind you, as have others, that personal insults and ad hominem attacks are strictly forbidden on this Forum. No one is out to "defeat" you, but you are doing an excellent job of defeating yourself, my friend. If you cannot or will not contribute anything positive and edifying to this Forum, it would be better for you to log off voluntarily. Otherwise, should you choose to continue to hurl your salvos of bitterness and personal insults against other members of this Forum, please be informed that you surely and rapidly will be removed from participating in this StudyBibleForum. --Hank
207 | Is this a Christian Forum? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 105306
JChricton - StudyBibleForum was begun nearly three years ago by the Lockman Foundation, translators of the New American Standard Bible and other versions, with the idea and ideal of providing, to use their terminology, "a study Bible with unlimited margins." The ideal has never been fully and perfectly attained. While the Forum is not monitored in the sense that posters and postings are pre-screened, it is nevertheless supervised and carefully monitored by a certain group of long-time users who report improper Forum conduct to the Lockman Foundation who, in turn, are prompt to take appropriate action which may, and frequently does, involve the revocation of the abusers' privilege to make additional posts to the Forum. (I might add, parenthetically, that any registered user is free, and even encouraged, to lodge an abuse report against any other user who does not abide by the Forum guidelines). ..... Even so, since these procedures are re-active and not pre-emptive, undesirable posts do find their way in and remain permanently in the Forum archives for all to see. Lockman has carefully drawn up a series of guidelines for Forum conduct, and anyone who conscientiously adheres to them need have no fear of censure. ....... There are many users whose posts are consistently good and trusworthy, just as there are other users whose posts fall short of the mark. The best advice that I can offer is to sample the wares, weigh them carefully against scriptural teaching, and decide which are worthy of your time and consideration and which are not. This is a Forum made by human beings. No post is above question, none is infallible, and none is worth a row of pins unless it lines up squarely with Scripture. You may well learn something worthwhile here about Scripture that you had never thought about before. And from even the most glaring of the error-ridden posts you may learn something of what pitfalls to avoid! But to accept the Forum's offerings in toto as being the definitive model of proper biblical exegesis would be a most hazardous mistake. I trust you will join in and enjoy the Forum, but please, please always be a Berean and search the Scriptures daily to see whether the things being exhibited on this Forum are so! Yours in Christ Jesus, --Hank

209 | When God reveals Your Husband | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 106064
Ivory: You have asked, "When God reveals something to someone, does He reveal it to another person at the same time or at different times?" ....... The Bible says, "Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son..." (Hebrews 1:1,2a). ...... Thus I am always on the side of extreme caution when I use the word "reveal," taking care to use it in the context of what God has already revealed through His word and shying away from attributing a hunch or a wish as a personal revelation from God. Scripture simply does not support such an assumption. God does work mightily in the hearts and lives of His people through His word, through the indwelling Holy Spirit, and through the answering of the prayers of the righteous that are prayed in accordance with His will, but Scripture does not support private, individual divine revelation dispensed through such media as visions. This is "rightly dividing the word of truth" but it is intended in no way, nor does it, diminish the awesome efficacy of prayer. James says that the effecutual, fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much. But God's answer to the prayers of His children should not be viewed as if they were special, private revelations. They are not. The Scriptures alone are God's revelation of Himself and of His will and plan for man. --Hank
210 | What scientific discoveries match Bible? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 106332
TommyS - The Christian website www.icr.org has in its archives much material relevant to the Bible and science that may be of interest to you. .... Some of the distinguished Bible believing scientists in recent history include Joseph Lister, Louis Pasteur, Sir Isaac Newton, Johann Kepler, Robert Boyle, Georges Cuvier, Charles Babbage, Michael Faraday, Lord Kelvin, Henri Fabre, Leonardo Da Vinci, Gregor Mendel, Louis Agassiz, Blaise Pascal, James Joule, Carolus Linnaeus, Joseph Henry, Francis Bacon, and Samuel F.B. Morse. The various fields in which these men distinguished themselves can be learned by consulting a general encyclopedia or through on-line resources. There have been many other Bible believing scientists, of course. My list is by no means exhaustive. --Hank
211 | What is the TEV bible? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 108278
TEV is an abbreviation for Today's English Version. Also known as the Good New Bible, this version has been around since 1976. It follows a thought-for-thought translation philosophy in contrast to a more literal word-for-word translation, such as the King James and New American Standard Bibles. I used the Google search engine and typed in Today's English Version. It yielded more material on this version than I was inclined to digest! --Hank

dgolden1 - The quotation you are seeking reads, "Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, nor hell a fury like a woman scorned." 214 | Is marriage necessary? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 109637
"Is marriage necessary for a man and a woman to be committed to their relationship?" .... This is the same thing as asking, "Is it all right to fornicate?" -- assuming that the relationship in question involves sexual intimacy. And God's answer is a flat No, it is not right to fornicate, commit adultery, or engage in any other sexual acts outside of marriage. These the Bible calls sins, friend. It is sinful to engage in sexual activities outside of marriage. There are many Scriptures on or closely related to this subject. See for example Matthew 15:18-20; 1 Corinthians 6:9; Hebrews 13:4.
215 | Don't you think ...? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 109644
Hello, Earnest - Your question is, "Don't you think that more books are being written every day?" .... My answer is, if by 'books' you mean secular books, then of course it is obvious that more books are being written daily. But if by 'books' you mean bona fide additions to Scripture, then I would give a categorical 'no' to that. .... Perhaps I misunderstand your question. Surely you don't hold that additional books of Scripture are being written daily. ..... As for your second question, "Do you think there will be books written in eternty...or will the Word cease to increase?" I have no knowledge of that whatever, and I am not given to speculation. --Hank
216 | Girlfriends racist parents. HELP ME! | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 109934
Dear "Kas" - The soundest advice you can hope for on an Internet Forum is to seek face-to-face guidance from a qualified Christian counselor within your own community. Obviously that would be someone other than your own pastor who you say kicked you out of the church which he purports to pastor. Taking your account to be accurate and true, I am filled with consternation and dismay by the apparent bigotry that it appears to depict. May God be at your side in your crucible and I pray that your problems will find resolution. --Hank

Sexual immorality encompasses the broad spectrum of sexual activities engaged in outside of marriage, including but not limited to fornication and adultery. Homosexuality and bestiality, for example, are both immoral and perverted sexual acts which, along with fornication and adultery, the Bible clearly and solidly condemns. --Hank
