221 | How long were years of Noah's life? | OT general | Norrie | 10022
Periods of time are still the same, 24 hrs in a day, etc. The reason supposedly people lived longer was that before the flood there was a different, I'm not a scholar but I've heard them talk about it, something to do with oxygen content? Dr. Carl Baugh had a theory about the canopy over the earth when it was made, there were perfect conditions, people were made perfect then, remember there was no rain until the flood? Before then the earth was in perfect harmony, but after the flood was when the canopy broke, the fountains of the deep were released, the earth was tilted on it's axis and things were never the same since. Notice, after the flood, people didn't live as long. There are several creation science sites that you can find information about this.

223 | Answer the Question | OT general | Norrie | 14295
I copied this off of my church's website. It's not an indepth anything just a general note from pastor, will this help? Greetings! Billy Graham was once asked, "If you had your ministry to do over again, what would you do differently?" to which he replied, "I would preach more grace." After a lifetime of ministry, the great evangelist concluded that grace is the issue. This is the starting point for all we do. Cottage Hill Baptist Church seeks to be a "grace place" where people can come and experience the forgiveness of God and the life-changing power of His Spirit. Our mission is to be grace people "shedding the love of God abroad." We are a conservative Southern Baptist church that believes God has given us His word, clear, concise and inerrant. Our task is to read it, meditate upon it, proclaim it, and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, apply it in our lives. We would be honored to have you visit with us any Sunday. Cottage Hill is a church with a great heritage whose greatest days lie ahead. Until Jesus Comes, Allan Lockerman, Sr. Pastor. I have a booklet here on what So. Bapt. believe, but it's too much to print. :) |

224 | Answer the Question | OT general | Norrie | 14303
Brian, I haven't really been here too long, maybe just before you, maybe?, I don't know, I doubt it's been a month yet, but maybe, so I don't know who belongs to what demonination to say. I know I'd sure be interested in hearing what the Cath say since it's been 30 yrs since I listened to them. I know a few years ago, my mother finally left the church when her priest told her life's a gamble, you gamble on heaven or hell. What exactly are they saying now?

I'm sure many people here can testify to needing protection against relatives, even siblings, I know I can. :)
226 | Answer the Question | OT general | Norrie | 14309
Brian, you ought to be able to say as far as you know, they say you must do, believe whatever to be saved. As far as salvation goes, my church which is So. Bapt. believes salvation is exactly as the Bible describes it to be. We teach the kids the ABCs in vacation Bible school-ADMIT you're a sinner, BELIEVE that Jesus is the Son of God who came to earth, died on the cross for our sin and rose again on the third day, CONFESS Him w/your mouth. Now that's the simplified children's version, not getting deep where you get into repentance and what that means. :) Surely you can give a simplified version, what do you tell your kids?
227 | Salvation | OT general | Norrie | 14311
God's Plan of Salvation The Bible says there is only one way to Heaven Jesus said: "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me." (John 14:6) Good works cannot save you. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9) Trust Jesus Christ today! Here's what you must do: Admit you are a sinner. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" (Romans 3:23) "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:" (Romans 5:12) "If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us." (1 John 1:10) Be willing to turn from sin (repent). Jesus said: "I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish." (Luke 13:5) "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:" (Acts 17:30) Believe that Jesus Christ died for you, was buried, and rose from the dead. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16) "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners. Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8) "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." (Romans 10:9) Through prayer, invite Jesus into your life to become your personal Saviour. "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:10) "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." (Romans 10:13) What to pray: Dear God, I am a sinner and need forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ shed His precious blood and died for my sin. I am willing to turn from sin. I now invite Christ to come into my heart and life as my personal Saviour. "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:" (John 1:12) "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." (2 Corinthians 5:17) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have received Jesus Christ as your Saviour, as a Christian you should: Read your Bible every day to get to know Christ better. "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15) "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalms 119:105) Talk to God in prayer every day. "And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive." (Matthew 21:22) "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." (Philippians 4:6) Be baptized, worship, fellowship, and serve with other Christians in a church where Christ is preached and the Bible is the final authority. "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:" (Matthew 28:19) "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching." (Hebrews 10:25) "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:" (2 Timothy 3:16) Tell others about Christ. "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15) "For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!" (1 Corinthians 9:16) "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." (Romans 1:16) |

228 | How many years in between Adam and Noah? | OT general | Norrie | 17222
I had to be more than that. I found an old email I saved about Bible chronology, it doesn't go into the detail of exactly how much time between Adam and Noah, but it does go to the flood and Noah was 5-600 yrs old by the time the flood came, so a thousand years is prob closer. I believe I read that Adam was still around when Noah's daddy was born but not Noah. Anyway, here it is: Jim Kalua here: Adam to the Flood Equals 1656 years: Gen.5; Gen.7:6 Flood to Abraham Equals 427 years: Gen.11:10-32; Gen.12:4 Abraham to the Exodus Equals 430 years: Gal.3: 17 Exodus to Solomon's Temple Equals 480 years 1Kgs.6:1 Solomon's Temple to the Death of Ahab Equals 116 years: 1Kgs.11: 42; 1Kgs.14:21; 1Kgs.15 :1,2; 1Kgs.16 :29 The Death of Ahab occurred in 853 BC. Tapes should be bought after you've paid tithe but I'd be leery of Benny Hinn and company.

Most tapes are usually pretty cheap, just cost to handle price of tape and S and H, I don't think there's much profit, if any. You're right. Bible is the best answer. :) |

235 | "Once Saved Always Saved" | NT general Archive 1 | Norrie | 24240
Lisa, this came out of latest Cath Catechism, how do you explain it? QUOTES FROM CATHOLIC CATACHISM 846: "OUTSIDE THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH THERE IS NO SALVATION" How are we to understand this affirmation, often repeated by the Church Fathers? Re-formulated positively, it means that all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Roman Catholic Church, which is his Body: Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition. the Council teaches that the Catholic Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Catholic Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and hereby affirded at the same time the necessity of the Catholic Church which men enter through Baptism as a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse to enter it. Does the Roman Catholic Catechism make any exceptions to the above doctrinal statement by naming another religious group or denomination? (Yes is 841) 841 "The Catholic Church's relationship with the Muslims: "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us adore the one merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day." In Catholic Doctrine, the only religious group that is named that can be saved without the aid of the Catholic Church is the Muslims. |

Brian, I'm sure the Cath Catechism doesn't speak for every Christian! I would think that it's basically RCC views, they sure wouldn't be speaking for Baptists or AOGs, etc.-see what I mean? If they mean Russian or Greek Orth, I might can accept that tho, aren't they basically offshoots? My mother has a copy of that text. She bought it for latest RCC views back when she was still one. What's that about Moslems too? They sure don't believe in Jesus as Son of God and Savior. |

I thought you meant when you said Cath means universal that they were speaking for everybody-sorry! But that seg. I posted sure reads like Cath only, escept maybe Muslims. I remember arguing w/a Latter Day Saint when I was a kid, both of us claim our religions were only one going to heaven, all others going to hell. Remember, I was raised strict Cath. I haven't been a part of them for 30 yrs but I sure was indoctrinated for 20! Then all my older relatives inxcluding my dad died Cath, Mama just left them about 5 yrs ago which was a miracle in itself because I thought she'd never leave. You wouldn't believe some of the stories Mama tells about how they shafted her and she still came back for more-unbelieveable! I think I posted a few if you do a search. :) |

This is a true testimony. I'm leaving off the man's name. For some of these brothers and sisters it is important that the area where they live now, or where they originally come from, is not too closely identified to ensure either their own safety or that of their families. Islam is the main religion in fact, the state religion in my country. Our law is subject to the demands and teachings of Islam. But I am a traitor to Islam. I was born into a Muslim family and therefore knew nothing about Jesus Christ. I had many nominal Christian friends, and I asked one of them for a Bible. When I read it, I was surprised to find that God loves me and made a way to forgive my sins. I learned that because Jesus Christ died on the cross, I could be saved and would not have to die for my sins. In studying Islam I had not found the way to know God. In studying the Bible I found that only Jesus could satisfy my hunger for Him. I decided to believe in Jesus Christ and follow Him. When I did that, my life changed in a very good way. I had peace for the first time. I was baptized and became a member of a church. Then I began to speak about my newfound life in Jesus Christ in many churches and among my friends. One day in December 1981 I talked with some people in a taxi about Jesus Christ. They led me to believe they were open to hear about the Lord. When I left the taxi, they asked for the address of my church and said they would like to attend. I gave them the address, not knowing I had already been reported because of my Christian faith. That evening they came to the church, bringing the secret police with them. I was arrested without a warrant or any legal grounds. When I arrived at the jail, one of the guards asked why I was there. When I told him it was because I was a Christian, he called the barber to shave my head. They kept me 5 days in solitary confinement, and I was not allowed to call my family or friends to tell them where I was. The guards beat me and said I could go free if I would renounce my faith in Christ. When I refused, the officials transferred me to the prison for the most dangerous criminals in the country. I was never given a trial by a court of law. I was put in a small room in solitary confinement for the next 8 months. Although it is a law that all prisoners should have two blankets, when I asked for covers they said, No. You are a Christian. You will not get any covers. I slept on the rough cement floor, no bed, no blankets and continued through the winter without even the basic necessities other prisoners were given. Despite the extreme cold, I had an open window in my room and no heating. I received one meal a day made of lentils. The had of the prison told me not to speak with anyone, as he was afraid others would believe in Jesus Christ. When the guard saw me speak with anyone, he would slap me hard and push me. Once when I was speaking with another prisoner who asked for a Bible, the head of the prison beat me with a whip. Many soldiers came to my door and said, You are a very bad man. You are an infidel. The door to my room was closed all day except for a 5 minute break to go to the rest room. The rest of the time I stayed alone in my room. Other prisoners were allowed to leave their rooms freely from 9 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon. For a month and a half my family did not know where I was. When they asked for information, the police said they did not know. I made the acquaintance of a prisoner who was permitted to send letters out of the prison. He sent messages to my family and friends, telling them where I was. They came to the prison but were told I was not there. My brother, an officer in the army, asked the secret police to tell him where I was so he could visit me and try to get me to renounce my faith in Jesus Christ. After his visit they decided to let three members of my family come, but they forbade visits of any friends, thinking they would be Christians and would try to encourage me. I was not allowed to have any money, although all the necessities such as hot water in the winter and extra food were acquired with bribes given to the guards. My friends wanted to give me food, money, and clothes, but the authorities refused. For 2 months I had only the clothes I had been wearing when arrested. Finally, my family was able to give me clothes and some food, and another prisoner who had extra privileges quietly gave me two covers. But still I had no bed. The secret police warned my family not to help me very much. They wanted to make things hard for me so I would give up my faith in Jesus Christ. Members of my family were afraid they would be killed. Part 2... Occasionally the secret police would send a man to ask: Will you renounce your faith in Jesus Christ and be a good Muslim again? They would try to tempt me with the offer of money and a car, my freedom, and a job with the secret police. I said no. When the authorities realized I would not give up my faith in Jesus Christ, they decided, with no explanation, to let me out of prison on bail. The secret police told me not to go to any church and said if they saw me in church they would arrest me again and kill me. Muslim law requires that anyone who converts from Islam to another religion should be killed. If another Muslim were to kill me for any reason, the government would excuse him, and he would not be arrested or even punished. I am considered a traitor to Islam, deserving to be killed. MY CHOICE IS TO SERVE JESUS CHRIST. |
