Add this thought ... God made man in His own image (Gen 1:26-27, 9:6) ... which is permanent (1Co 11:7) Adam became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image (Gen 5:3) ... which is temporary Searcher |

223 | Five Questions for Church Membership | Heb 10:19 | Searcher56 | 216262
Doc, Raed post 215242, which includes my view of worship and service. I never said worship was one day a week. Nor did I say it was a congregational activity. Worship should happen more often, even daily, by indivduals. Yes, it can be a congregational activity. I think we miscommunicated on the Holy Spirit. I see it missing in point 4. Dr. Duncan has it elsewhere, but I wish he would have included our ability by His power. "A ninth generation Presbyterian elder" ... I think of Paul (Phil 3:4-7). If you read my profile, you'll see I differ on some minor issues. If I trumpet them, they could cause disunity. Searcher |

224 | Five Questions for Church Membership | Heb 10:19 | Searcher56 | 216260
Doc, I do understand the Reformed branch ... but in my studies I disagree with some points, including the ones I mentioned ... 216254, it was the how worship is defined and "my OWN ability". If we don't study other Scripture beyond the Confession of Faith, Baptist Faith and Doctrine, et. al. I never take anything on face value. I also don't trumpet my differnces ... every much. I grew up in a Pietist Baptist (BGC) church, changed to Reformed Baptist (SBC), attended Presbyterian and Christian and Missionary Alliance churches. I understand the differences ... and it is not a big deal. Since their belief about God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Bible, man, salvation and eternity are the same. The other points are minor. 225 | Five Questions for Church Membership | Heb 13:17 | Searcher56 | 216258
Doc, I think congregation rule would have a different slant. The pastoral (single person) rule, maybe too. I do undertand the Reformed branch. S |

227 | Five Questions for Church Membership | Heb 10:19 | Searcher56 | 216254
Doc, Dr. Duncan's second point is The Church’s Worship – Corporate, All of life. I disagree. I consider that service. Romans 12 is about service. Worship is the special time we acknowledge God's superiority. While some can't bow phyiscally - we all better do it in our heart. His third point is ... when we say “I do” to the question that we will support the church in its worship and work to the best of our ability, we are saying that we are committed to the church’s work in worship, discipleship, and outreach. I don't see anything about by the power of the Holy Spirit ... nor use of my spiritula gifts, also from Him. My OWN abilities will lead to failure. S |

228 | Five Questions for Church Membership | Heb 13:17 | Searcher56 | 216253
God's day to you, Doc. Doctor J. Ligon Duncan III said, "I ran a Google search on these questions earlier this week to see where they would pop up on the internet, and it was interesting how many different families of Christians, denominational groupings, use basically these five questions as their basic questions of membership. These questions stretch back for at least 450 or 500 years in the English-speaking world – and maybe they’re older than that." I also did. There are many hits. For his message series go to http://www.fpcjackson.org/resources/sermons/The_Church/ select membership then the message Otherwise type the following, expect replace "o/o" with the percent sign http://www.fpcjackson.org/resources/sermons/The_Church/Church o/o 20Membership/no.5_do_you_submit_yourself_to_the.htm I wonder if the church rule comes into play with this point. 229 | weep with others is more important? | Rom 12:15 | Searcher56 | 216238
Azure, I agree with John. We need to do both. People need our support when we are up and down. While our goal is the "Well done" (Luk 19:17), we need it while on earth. Searcher |

230 | "the two" and "one new man" refer to ? | Eph 2:15 | Searcher56 | 216196
Azure, I agree with you. I would expect èr, which for those that don't know looks like an equal sign, with the bottom line a little longer, since one is yi (one horizontal stroke). I couldn't find èr in any of the Traditional or Simplified versions. In my English-Japanese NT, they have the Chinese character for two and one. Ask your minister why the confusion. Searcher |

God's day to you, FTK, Since you have looked up more that 22000 greek (or id it Greek?) words, have you looked up all 5674 different Greek words in the NT (Strongs)? I have heard it is aroun 5440. The total number Greek words in the NT is 133,892. Have you just looked them up or studied them, including the root and different parts of speech? Have you studied how they are translated, not just into American? Searcher |

233 | why do we sing the songs we sing? | Bible general Archive 4 | Searcher56 | 215895
God's day to you, pwadumdi, In Matthew 15:8 (Mark 7:6), Jesus quotes Isaiah 29:13 "Because this people draw near with their words And honor Me with their lip service, But they remove their hearts far from Me, And their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote" ... read the context of the passages. I believe some (most) do it with their singing. I have seen people's faces not refelct the sonsgs they sing. I wonder if it is by rote or from the heart. Searcher |

235 | Do we understand suffering in delighting | Ps 37:4 | Searcher56 | 215844
God's day to you, mommapbs, My concern is that some take two verses and make it read the way want, tho I don't think you did. My thoughts on suffering is that can be because -God is testing us -God lets Satan do something, like Job -we fail to take care of ourselves ... there may be more. I agree God is teaching us, even when we are stupid. Searcher |

237 | deny himself, and take up his cross | Mark 8:34 | Searcher56 | 215620
John, People THINK they have rights. Little do those without Christ know they are slaves to sin, as Romans 6:16-20 and other passages tell all. They think they are exercising their rights, having it their way ... but, their slavemaster, Satan, is in control. Looking at the context of this verse (Mark 8:27-38) and the cross reference (Matt 16:13-28, Luke 9:18-27) it is not giving a little more of yourself daily ... but to be willing to physically die for Him daily. 238 | deny himself, and take up his cross | Mark 8:34 | Searcher56 | 215616
God's day to you, John, Taking up or carrying one's cross meant death, nothing less, as seen in Matthew 27:40 and other verses. It all begins with denying self, which Jesus set as an example (Phil 2:5-8), for He, as the Son of God, being God Himself, gave up all that for us. Are you willing yo give up all your rights and die along with Him? Searcher |
