22 | Receiving Christ - Works? | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 92946
Huron, Tell him that life itself is a gift or grace from God and so is our ability to respond to God. How could he deny that? Our very existence and everything associated with it, even our ability to "work" however you define it, is pure grace. Emmaus |

23 | what is meant by "balm in Gilead? | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 92963
The Gospel hymn There Is a Balm in Gilead refers to Christ our healer. Jer 8:22 Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has not the health of the daughter of my people been restored? 7 Jer 46:11 Go up to Gilead and obtain balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt! In vain have you multiplied remedies; There is no healing for you. 8 Jer 51:8 Suddenly Babylon has fallen and been broken; Wail over her! Bring balm for her pain; Perhaps she may be healed. 9 Ezek 27:17 "Judah and the land of Israel, they were your traders; with the wheat of Minnith, cakes, honey, oil and balm they paid for your merchandise. |

25 | works law? | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 92982
Huron, Well, there is no accounting for what some people believe and no argument that will covince them. I would pose the question let him mull it over for a decade or two and refuse to accept any irrational response he may give as irrational. For extra credit you may want to look into the philospohical concept of Nominalism as it has been applied to theology for about 600 years. That is at the root of the problem here. I would guess your brother is a Monergistic Calvinist, with influences from Karl Barth also. Emmaus |

26 | Background info? | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 93160
confused: Some helpful links are at the bottom of this post. Backgound for Moses is in Exodus, for Solomon in 1 Samuel,2 Samuel Kings and Chronicles. David wrote some of the Pslams and others were written by Temple musicians. Matthew is usually associated with matthew or Levi, the Apostle. Mark was a companion of Peter, Luke, a Gentile physician and companion of Paul and John the Apostle. The New Testament writers were often writing for specific audiences and so tooka specific slant: Matthew for Jews or Jewish converts to Christianity, Mark to Roman Gentile pagans and converts from that group, Luke to Hellenic or culturally Greek Gentiles or Christian converts and John for all, filling in the gas in the other Gospels and presenting a systematic theology in his Gospel. http://www.abu.nb.ca/courses/NTIntro/indexNTIntr.htm http://www.salvationhistory.com/online/Beginner/WalkGen.cfm Emmaus |

27 | are you required to be baptisted again | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 93165
How many Christ's are there? One. How many baptisms atre there? One. How many times are you baptised into Christ? Once. Did Paul in his instructions to the Corinthians about their worst sinner, whom he instructed to be excommunicated until they repented ever mention re-baptism? No. Why not? Because there is: Eph 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, Rom 6:3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Rom 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life." 29 | One body of water--many different names | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 93233
Kind of like Washington D.C. which locals and others variously refer to as Washington, The District or just D.C., its proper name being The City of Washing in the District of Columbia. So you have the Sea of Gallilee, Lake Genesereth and the Sea of Tiberius. Gallilee is the larger area or Province, Tiberias is a Roman City on the shores of the lake and Genesereth is a fertile plain at the NW corner of the lake shore. I do not think there is any theological reason, just the normal function of language where people us a variety of name depending on their point of reference and local custom. |

31 | any reference to the dogwood in thebible | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 93382

32 | Spiritual Maturity and Marriage | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 93547
Could you define "spiritually immature" in a little more detail and repost your question? Are we taking, unbeliever, atheist, lukewarm believer, pagan secularist and what level of "spiritual maturity" in the other person is this being compared to? Most people hopefully grow in spiritual maturity through marriage, but only a masochist would really marry into a complete "unevenly yoked" mismatch which scripture warns against. Pre marital testing and conselling before you make the commitment is very valuable in this situation to assess the likelihood of success or failure in marriage. There are worse things in life than being single, sometimes that is being married. |
