141 | When did Jesus become The Christ? | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 123877
As Hank and Kalos pointed out, Jesus is the eternally pre-existent Son of the Father, the same yesterday, today and forever. That being said, the technical term "the Christ" or "the annointed one" is fulfilled when Jesus was baptised by John and "annointed with the Holy Spirit" to begin his mission as Priest, Prophet and King. "The word "Christ" comes from the Greek translation of the Hebrew Messiah, which means "anointed". It became the name proper to Jesus only because he accomplished perfectly the divine mission that "Christ" signifies. In effect, in Israel those consecrated to God for a mission that he gave were anointed in his name. This was the case for kings, for priests and, in rare instances, for prophets(Cf. Ex 29:7; Lev 8:12; 1 Sam 9:16; 10:1; 16:1,12-13; 1 Kings 1:39; 19:16). This had to be the case all the more so for the Messiah whom God would send to inaugurate his kingdom definitively(Cf. Ps 2:2; Acts 4:26-27.) It was necessary that the Messiah be anointed by the Spirit of the Lord at once as king and priest, and also as prophet (Cf. Isa 11:2; 61:1; Zech 4:14; 6:13; Lk 4:16-21). Jesus fulfilled the messianic hope of Israel in his threefold office of priest, prophet and king. " To the shepherds, the angel announced the birth of Jesus as the Messiah promised to Israel: "To you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." (Lk 2:11). From the beginning he was "the one whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world", conceived as "holy" in Mary's virginal womb (Jn 10:36; cf. Lk 1:35). God called Joseph to "take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit", so that Jesus, "who is called Christ", should be born of Joseph's spouse into the messianic lineage of David (Mt 1:20; cf. 1:16; Rom 1:1; 2 Tim 2:8; Rev 22:16)." "Jesus' messianic consecration reveals his divine mission, "for the name 'Christ' implies 'he who anointed', 'he who was anointed' and 'the very anointing with which he was anointed'. The one who anointed is the Father, the one who was anointed is the Son, and he was anointed with the Spirit who is the anointing.'" (St. Irenaeus, Adv. haeres. 3,18,3:PG 7/1,934). His eternal messianic consecration was revealed during the time of his earthly life at the moment of his baptism by John, when "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power", "that he might be revealed to Israel" (Acts 10:38; Jn 1:31) as its Messiah. His works and words will manifest him as "the Holy One of God" (Mk 1:24; Jn 6:69; Acts 3:14). " http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p1s2c2a2.htm Emmaus |

146 | what happened to the ark of the covenant | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 124372
The last mention of the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament of Protestant Bibles is in Jermiah 3:16. Jer 3:16 "It shall be in those days when you are multiplied and increased in the land," declares the LORD, "they will no longer say, 'The ark of the covenant of the LORD.' And it will not come to mind, nor will they remember it, nor will they miss it, nor will it be made again. In Catholic Bibles it is mention in 2 Macabees 2:4-8, a passage which refers to documents not found in either the Protestant of Catholic Bible "The same document also tells how the prophet, following a divine revelation, ordered that the tent and the ark should accompany him and how he went off to the mountain which Moses climbed to see God's inheritance. When Jeremiah arrived there, he found a room in a cave in which he put the tent, the ark, and the altar of incense; then he blocked up the entrance. Some of those who followed him came up intending to mark the path, but they could not find it. When Jeremiah heard of this, he reproved them: "The place is to remain unknown until God gathers his people together again and shows them mercy. Then the Lord will disclose these things, and the glory of the Lord will be seen in the cloud, just as it appeared in the time of Moses and when Solomon prayed that the Place might be gloriously sanctified." 2 Macabees 2:4-8 http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/bible/2maccabees/2maccabees2.htm Others have mentioned the stories of an Ark in Ethiopia that no one ever sees. |

147 | A "Passion" question | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 124443
6 days, Sorry to be so slow in responding. I did not see your question until I saw EdB resposne which was pretty accurate. Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerick, was an Augustian Nun, who had many visions of the life of Christ, which were recorded by Brentano in four volumes. A book on the Passion was also published from those volumes titled The Dorous Passion of Out Lord Jesus Christ. It is available in print from TAN books. It has been some time since I read the book, but I do recall the scene with "Veronica" and the scene with Mary wiping up the blood as coming from the book. Gibson used these details to fill out the Gospel accounts. They are not Scripture and not part of Sacred Tradition and Catholics are not bound to accept any private revelation. It is part of popular devotions and the popular tradition about "Veronica" is very ancient and predated Emmerich's visions by over 1,000 years. Sacred Tradition and popular traditions or customs are two very different things for Catholics. 148 | SEX and MARRIAGE | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 124482
You are not crazy, your friend is. So,if you have sex with many people or with people of the same sex or both sexes, are you married to all of them? Ask your friend where this logic ends and if the marriage ends when you stop having sex. You have to make him or her see the logical extensions of the assertion as it would play out in real extended circumstances. I don't think verses are going to sway this person. Emmaus |

Dadda, They are not misunderstood. They are really not Christians in that they do not believe in the Holy Trinity or the Diivnity of Jesus Christ. Tey belive he is Michael the Archangel incarnate and that Satan is His brother. the do not believe in the Personhood of the holy Spirit, but rather that the Holy Spirit is an impersonal "force" from God. I would advise getting well grounded in the christian faith and avoiding the confusion you will expeience in dialogue with the Witnesses. Emmaus |

151 | Is God cruel, when he had people killed? | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 124819
Cariad, I do not have a pat answer to your question other than God's Sovreignty. It is worth noting however, that according to the Bible we all die because of just the sin of Adam, before even considering our own personal sins. It al a matter of timing in a very small space of time when compared to eternity. On the other hand, we can all live for eternity because of the sacrifice of Jesus. That not really fair either, but is anyone complaining? Emmaus |

152 | Purity in concerns with being raped | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 124972
Patts, God bless you. You cannot be made impure by what someone else does to you. Jesus said what defiles a person is what comes from their heart not something from outside them. Although the passages below refer to unclean foods, the principle can also apply in situation such as you have experienced. Matt 15:11 "It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man." Mark 7:20 And He was saying, "That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. God peace be with you. Emmaus |

154 | What is missionary dating? | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 125274
MsGrant, "Missionary dating" is a term that referris to the unwise practice of men or women dating non-believers in the hopes of converting them to Christ or one's own denomination. This usually proceeds from mixed motives involving romantic feelings and more often than not leads to misery rather than happiness. The bible does not speak of "missionary dating" but does tell us: "do not be unequally yoked" (2 Corinthians 6;14)and warns against marrying unbelievers in various places. Emmaus |

Rev 14:11 "And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name." Or to whom of My creditors did I sell you? Behold, you were sold for your iniquities, And for your transgressions your mother was sent away. 10 Jer 3:1 God says, "If a husband divorces his wife And she goes from him And belongs to another man, Will he still return to her? Will not that land be completely polluted? But you are a harlot with many lovers; Yet you turn to Me," declares the LORD. 11 Jer 3:8 "And I saw that for all the adulteries of faithless Israel, I had sent her away and given her a writ of divorce, yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear; but she went and was a harlot also. 12 Ezek 44:22 "And they shall not marry a widow or a divorced woman but shall take virgins from the offspring of the house of Israel, or a widow who is the widow of a priest. 13 Mal 2:16 "For I hate divorce," says the LORD, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with wrong," says the LORD of hosts. 158 | Why we have to suffer for the sin of Ada | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 126198
Johnny, Hope this helps some. "How did the sin of Adam become the sin of all his descendants? The whole human race is in Adam "as one body of one man".By this "unity of the human race" all men are implicated in Adam's sin, as all are implicated in Christ's justice. Still, the transmission of original sin is a mystery that we cannot fully understand. But we do know by Revelation that Adam had received original holiness and justice not for himself alone, but for all human nature. By yielding to the tempter, Adam and Eve committed a personal sin, but this sin affected the human nature that they would then transmit in a fallen state. It is a sin which will be transmitted by propagation to all mankind, that is, by the transmission of a human nature deprived of original holiness and justice. And that is why original sin is called "sin" only in an analogical sense: it is a sin "contracted" and not "committed" - a state and not an act. The doctrine of original sin, closely connected with that of redemption by Christ, provides lucid discernment of man's situation and activity in the world. By our first parents' sin, the devil has acquired a certain domination over man, even though man remains free. Original sin entails "captivity under the power of him who thenceforth had the power of death, that is, the devil"(cf. Heb 2:14).Ignorance of the fact that man has a wounded nature inclined to evil gives rise to serious errors in the areas of education, politics, social and morals. The doctrine of original sin is, so to speak, the "reverse side" of the Good News that Jesus is the Savior of all men, that all need salvation and that salvation is offered to all through Christ. The Church, which has the mind of Christ, knows very well that we cannot tamper with the revelation of original sin without undermining the mystery of Christ. The consequences of original sin and of all men's personal sins put the world as a whole in the sinful condition aptly described in St. John's expression, "the sin of the world".This expression can also refer to the negative influence exerted on people by communal situations and social structures that are the fruit of men's sins." 159 | How our Loving God commanded such things | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 126201
Johnny, It is God's way of cleansing the earth of sinful people on a smaller scale than the Flood of Noah. The bible is full of passages in which God says he is using one people to chastise another. See for example Isaiah 10:5-7, 13-16. and consider that the Assyrians for all practical purposes wiped out the ten "lost" tribes of Israel. The wrath of God is no small thing. Emmaus |

160 | WAS MY IMPORTANT DIVORCE A SIN | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 126281
TLKPCONFUSSED, Even the strictest position against divorce takes into consideration the sometime legitimate need to protection oneself from abuse. In this strictest interpretation no sin is incurred by the divorce itself in such a situation but only if one marries again. So you have not commited an unforgiveable sin by protecting yourself legally from abuse. Emmaus |
