122 | Gods punishment? | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 119400
hms, God still punishes people. God is "all forgiving" of "all confessed and repented of". It is good to point out that God is also all just and how His Justice and Mercy work outs is a mystery only He fully understands. Jesus spoke more about hell and eternal punishment than anyone else in the Bible. God does not force His mercy on anyone. Mention the Our Father" "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." And mention the story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1-11. "2091 The first commandment is also concerned with sins against hope, namely, despair and presumption: By despair, man ceases to hope for his personal salvation from God, for help in attaining it or for the forgiveness of his sins. Despair is contrary to God's goodness, to his justice - for the Lord is faithful to his promises - and to his mercy. 2092 There are two kinds of presumption. Either man presumes upon his own capacities, (hoping to be able to save himself without help from on high), or he presumes upon God's almighty power or his mercy (hoping to obtain his forgiveness without conversion and glory without merit)." http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p3s2c1a1.htm#2091 Emmaus |

123 | What is the Dark Ages | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 119450
The Dark Agews usually refers to the peiod from roughly 400 A.D. to 1000 A.D., the 5th to the 10th century. That was the time of the Barbarian invasions of the old Roman Empire, followe by the period of the Norsemen or Vikings. During that time the light of early Christian expansion and Classical Greek and Roman civilization was nearly wiped out from large portions of Europe and only gradually restored during the later Middles Ages from the 11th through the 15th century. Things actually started to improve during the 8th century reign of Charlemagne, but only when the Vikings we converted to Christianity in the 9th and 10th centuries did things start to improve dramatically to the point where Europe was referred to as Christendom. 125 | Catholic Bible Protestant Bible? | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 119853
Cheryl, Tyhe short answer is yes. There are seven books in the Catholic Old Testtament not found in the Protestant version. They are books that were int the Greek Septuagint translation of the Hewbrew Bible in use by Greek speaking Jews at the time of Jesus. In addition there a re a few passaged in Esther and Danile that were in the Greek version, but not the Hebrew version at the time of Christ. The New Testaments are the same. Emmaus |

126 | what is a Collegiality, Yahweh, Pharisee | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 121005
Collegiality refers to working together as a group. It is commonly used in Catholic circles to describe the interactions between Bishops with one another and as a group with the Pope. Cardinals in the Catholic Church, when referred to as a group are called The College of Cardinals. In secular terms people may refer to co-workers of equal status as colleagues. Colleges in the old English universities were groups within the University who lived, ate and studied together depending upon their course of studies. |

Mike, Resident Catholic here! Welcome to the Forum. Purgatory, like the word Trinity, is not found in scripture but the concept is implicit in scripture. Here are links to two articles that explain it with the scriptural citation. It goes without saying that others here do not agree. http://www.catholic.com/library/Purgatory.asp http://www.catholic.com/library/Roots_of_Purgatory.asp Emmaus |
