162 | Is verbal confession enough assurance | Rom 10:9 | srbaegon | 215956
Hello liz, Allow me to add to the responses. Consider Ephesians 2:8-10, and note verse 10 especially: 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Now look at James 1:22-25: 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. Putting these together we see that there is action or conduct that demonstrates that how we live agrees with what we say we believe. There is fruit that is born out of the new life within us (see Galatians 5:22-23). Note that this just scratches the surface of the topic. Steve |

163 | Did Jesus ever drink wine? | Matt 11:19 | srbaegon | 215861
Hello chosen one, The attached verse seems to indicate that Jesus did drink wine. If he did not, they could not have called him a drunkard. Steve |

164 | Does God lead us to sin? | Bible general Archive 4 | srbaegon | 215859
Hello chosen one, God does not lead people to sin. Concerning Pharaoh, look at Exodus 3:19 where God is speaking to Moses at the burning bush. "But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless compelled by a mighty hand." God knew Pharaoh's heart and pushed it in the direction it wanted to go. The same thing type of thing is demonstrated in Romans 1 where God gives people over to their depravity. Steve |

165 | Leave possesions to realize GOD | Genesis | srbaegon | 215106
Hello Rajeeb, No, you do not need to live in poverty to fully live for God. Consider these men: Abraham (Gen 24:35) The Lord has greatly blessed my master, and he has become great. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, camels and donkeys. Isaac (Gen 26:12-14) And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord blessed him, and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy. He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants, so that the Philistines envied him. Jacob (Gen 30:43) Thus the man increased greatly and had large flocks, female servants and male servants, and camels and donkeys. Joseph (Gen 41:39-44) Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has shown you all this, there is none so discerning and wise as you are. You shall be over my house, and all my people shall order themselves as you command. Only as regards the throne will I be greater than you." And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt." Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph's hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain about his neck. And he made him ride in his second chariot. And they called out before him, "Bow the knee!" Thus he set him over all the land of Egypt. Moreover, Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I am Pharaoh, and without your consent no one shall lift up hand or foot in all the land of Egypt." I could add others. All these men were blessed by the Lord with power and wealth. When Jesus said to the rich, young ruler to sell all, it was because the ruler loved money more than the Lord. Steve |

167 | did apostles disobey jesus' commission? | Matt 28:19 | srbaegon | 214458
Where do you get the idea that every apostle baptized only in the name of Jesus Christ? Just because Scripture does not directly address a matter, that does not mean it did not happen. Steve |

168 | Layman, what's up with that? | Bible general Archive 4 | srbaegon | 214166
Hello creaston, The concept is from the Levitical priesthood where there is a distinction between those in the Lord's assembly who can approach the Lord and those who cannot. The layman or common person cannot. Since the church practices (or should be) the priesthood of all believers, this distinction should not be made among Christians. Steve |

169 | Most important in book of Numbers? | Numbers | srbaegon | 214141
Hello steach, Welcome to SBF. There are two that come to mind: 1) the 12 spies in Canaan (chapters 13-14); and 2) Korah's rebellion (chapter 16). The former is probably more important, but that is a subjective answer. Steve |

170 | Soul winning scriptures | Mark 16:15 | srbaegon | 213919
Hello Eric, Welcome, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding. Strictly speaking your question is outside the scope of this forum. But since you asked, I will give you what I like. Gen 12:1-3 (God's blessing is meant for all people) Now the Lord said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." 1 Kings 8:41-43 (God desires that his works be made known so others will come to him) Likewise, when a foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, comes from a far country for your name's sake (for they shall hear of your great name and your mighty hand, and of your outstretched arm), when he comes and prays toward this house, hear in heaven your dwelling place and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to you, in order that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people Israel, and that they may know that this house that I have built is called by your name. 2 Tim 2:2 (Believers are to pass on and ground others in the faith) And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 171 | Over-explaining simple verses? | 1 Tim 2:3 | srbaegon | 213718

172 | Transgressions | Matt 16:6 | srbaegon | 213621
Hello fcs375, The penalty of sin is not passed down from one generation to another. Consider Ezek 18:19-20 Yet you say, "Why should not the son suffer for the iniquity of the father?" When the son has done what is just and right, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, he shall surely live. The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. Read all of Ezekiel 18 for context. Guilt and penalty are not passed on but consequences can be. Steve |

173 | Risen Saints who appeared to Many | Luke 16:31 | srbaegon | 213208
Hello kam, Just a couple of quick thoughts. First, while historians wrote much that happened during that era, they still were normal people that would not want to publicize something that may lead people away from their own agendas. A Jew promoting a resurrection based on Jesus' death would be undercutting his own belief system, be put out of his synagogue, or both. That will not happen. The Romans would do the same as they were holding to polytheism and emperor worship. Second, as for the argument of strong testimony, your friend misunderstands completely. The power is not in the miracle but in the gospel. When Jesus related the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16, he recounts how the rich man asked Abraham to send Lazarus back to his brothers because they would believe someone who rose from the dead. Abraham's response is telling: He said to him, "If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead." In addition the apostles never talked about the miracles to promote the gospel. They proclaimed Christ and him crucified as the final sacrifice for sin. The miracles attested to the message but were not the basis or even an integral part. Steve |

179 | Repetitively Asking Forgiveness | 1 John 1:9 | srbaegon | 211697
Hello readera4, Welcome to the forum. Scripture does not say that we are ever to ask forgiveness for sin. We are to: * Confess sin (1 John 1:9 as has been mentioned). * Consider ourselves dead to sin (Romans 6:11). Can you fill in a bit more what your thinking is? Perhaps, then, a better answer can be given. Steve |
