1422 | NIV | Philemon | srbaegon | 32865
Good morning Tenny In a nutshell, the book of Philemon is a wonderful example of how believers are to treat one another, especially of one in spiritual authority (Paul) to fellow saint (Philemon). In it Paul repeatedly holds Philemon in highest honor in order to plead for Onesimus' welfare as a runaway slave who has come to Christ and is now beneficial to Paul in the work of the gospel. 1423 | Are you intersted in Bible translations? | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 32634
Hi Ed I'm subscribed to a Bible translation mail list, and the things mentioned in the article get debated quite often. I side with the author in desiring "transparent" translations for serious study. But my NLT comes in handy for referencing. Steve |

1424 | Is there a difference between the two? | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 32528
Hello meekness Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit refer to the same person. Some have said that "ghost" is a better word because it more clearly shows personhood and equality in the Godhead, whereas "spirit" can mean an ethereal, mystical feeling without being a person. But for all practical purposes, "spirit" is just a more up-to-date term. Steve |

Good day to you In addition to Hank's answer, I give Eph 5:22-33. Steve |

1426 | Discipleship | NT general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 32517
Hi charlottetu I'll use your numbering system to answer. i) You need to study the various aspects of the Lord's interacting with the disciples. Things to look for would include: Individual calling Group dynamics Teaching to 12 compared to public Examine inner circle (Peter, James, John) for differences. Why were they set apart? Lord's use of disciples in outreach (i.e. sending of 12 in Matt 10) and retreat following. Determining application of those findings to your own life ii) It affects the Christian in every way. The Lord dealt with the 12 as individuals (treated Peter differently than Andrew or Levi). Know the person being discipled--also, know the discipler. Does this help? Steve |

1427 | Gender-neutral NIV | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 32486
Good morning kalos I've seen this on the e-mail lists I'm subscribed to. The opinions range from "Oh, no!" to "Oh, yes!" depending on the purpose and flavor of the list. I'll be interested in seeing it, although I must admit an aversion to NIV which will surely cloud my judgement. Steve |

1428 | direction on His Majesty | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 32368
God's Majesty Hello prayer warrior, Moses was basically on the same quest, and God said, "No, because you can't bear it" (Ex 33:18-20). What Moses got was only an inkling. So, don't try too hard. There are many passages that try to describe God in His glory and majesty (Isaiah 6; Ezekiel 1-3; Revelation). It's difficult to take these in because there are so many aspects. Steve |

1429 | Church "Covenant" unbiblical? | Eph 1:23 | srbaegon | 32364
My view of Church Covenant I preface by saying we have neither had nor considered a church covenant. With that understanding I wish to make a comment. The idea of a covenant is to demonstrate to those desiring fellowship in a local church that there is an expectation of active involvement in the local body. The new person/family makes a definite statement that there is an understanding of responsibility to the saints. By affirming the covenant, one commits himself to the ministries, emphases, teachings, etc. of the body. One would say, "Shouldn't that be the case anyway?" Yes, absolutely. But the sad fact is that people don't for one reason or another. Steve |

1430 | Why do we keep curses in our lives? | NT general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 31962
Hi Just, I'm not sure how to answer this. While the Lord Jesus did pay the penalty for sin, there is no Scripture that says He took away all sickness. And Scripture states that He took away the curse of the Law (i.e. guilt before the righteous standard of God)--Gal 3:13. Steve |

1431 | Why next in line refused to redeem Naomi | Ruth 4:5 | srbaegon | 31762
Good day! In all likelihood, the relative already had a family with children, so it was possible the inheritance that would have gone to his own children may have reverted to Ruth's instead. Steve |

1432 | Verdict on the ESV: An opinion poll.. | Ps 119:105 | srbaegon | 31568
And warm salutations in return! I have been reading and using my ESV regularly since I received it at Christmas. There are a few things I thought were incorrect (i.e. insertion of bracketed phrase in Psalm 145:13; wives instead of women in 1 Cor 11) but no glaring problems. Overall, the translators/editors worked out a good combination of literalness and readability. Steve |

1433 | Engaged and want to find a church? | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 29735
My response.................... I agree with Jensen that the man of the home is ultimately responsible for the decision of where to attend, but the discussion and decision needs to be made before the wedding. It's just one of the many, many decisions that have to be made beforehand to help the transition to married life. Steve |

1434 | which of joseph's brothers were leaders | Genesis | srbaegon | 29561
Now THAT is quite a question! Four of them stand out: Reuben - Sought to usurp his father by going into his concubine. Prevented other brothers from killing Joseph. Simeon and Levi - Taking revenge of Dinah into their own hands by killing the men of Shechem. Judah - Being willing to take Benjamin's place in Egyptian slavery. These all show leadership whether or not it was properly used. Steve |

1436 | Where? | Ex 15:26 | srbaegon | 29003
The text you desire............................. "Lord...your healer" or "Lord who heals you" is the text in question. I believe all the compound names of Jehovah are Hebrew. There are some Bible editions that have these listed as footnotes or in the cross-reference section of the page. In order to answer your question I did an internet search for "jehovah rapha". I know where some are located, but this one escaped me. There are books explaining the names of God, but I don't know which has all these listed. Sorry. Steve |

1438 | Sumission to authority? | Heb 13:17 | srbaegon | 28650
Submission to authority.......................... There are many questions in your question. A big way to recognize authority is by the attitude you take when discussing your pastor or his views. You can disagree, but acknowledge him and his position without belittling. Are your interpretations different or the application? There is no difficulty with alternate applications. If your interpretations differ, that's another matter. Be patient in this (maybe you already have). There are times when it is best to part, and yes, it could be mutually profitable to both. "How can two walk together unless they agree?" Steve |

1439 | How does Deut. 4:9 relate to my life? | Deut 4:9 | srbaegon | 28621
Think of it as an elongated testimony time. Sharing what the Lord has done in your life is an excellent teaching tool to young minds showing how the Lord is faithful in His dealings. That's why we find such a high premium in the OT on setting up stones and pillars and psalms of remembrance. The call is to remember the work of the Lord. Even in the Lord's Supper we have this portrayed--remembering Him. If we fail to tell the next generation, the people forget and move away from Him. Steve |
||||||
1440 | Death of the high priest? | Josh 20:6 | srbaegon | 28610
Fareshadowing of Christ........................ I see the picture as those condemned by the Law (therefore punishable by death) who had fled to the city of refuge (God Himself) until that time when the high priest (Lord Jesus) died, thus releasing the debt. There's probably other ways to see this. Steve |
