If I may insert one comment, some Bibles have additional extra books that Protestants call the Apocrypha (Catholics I believe refer to them as Deuterocanonical books). Brad |

Adding an additional comment, some Bibles in the bookstore are NOT divided into Old Testament and New Testament, but placed in chronological order based on the publisher's belief on when the passage was written. This will cause some of the accepted publishing orders to be altered to allow for chronological flow. I have two of these style Bibles which are actually very nice for personal reading, but couldn't really be used in a group study (i.e. books and sections of the books are intermingled so you would have a hard time turning to a passage). Also, some devotional Bibles are broken done by calendar days and may have a passage from the OT, NT, and Psalms. So there are different styles of Bibles based off of the Old Testament and New Testament canonized Scriptures. Hopefully, I didn't confuse matters, because the Protestant Bible is based off of 66 books divided into two Testaments (Old and New). Brad |

145 | do you need to fasten | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 231140
If you are referring to fast or fasting, the answer is no. Romans 10:9-11 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”(ESV) Fasting is not a requirement to be saved. Being saved is not something we can take credit for, Ephesians 2:8,9 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (ESV) Brad |

149 | is it wrong to go out with a 36 if you | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 231378
To the best of my knowledge, the Bible doesn't address any age of dating. Regardless of the age, you still have to approach dating in a Godly manner remembering that our bodies are the temple of God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). There are cultural considerations to take into consideration, but I would think that would be outside of this forum. Brad |

I haven't come across either of these formats in the manner you have listed. The closest I can think of is a program called e-sword. The basic program is free and you can buy add ons, such as NIV/NASB. Brad |

153 | revelation of the right ear in scriptur | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 231511
This is my guess and I have no Scripture to support it, so I hesitate to give an answer, but the right ear being anointed could have something to do with the tradition that the right side was the place of honor and the important guest was seated on the right. As far as linking the two incidents together, I think Peter just swung his sword and was trying to kill the man. If you are right handed, the sword would be carried on your left side. If you swung the sword from a straight draw, you would most likely be swinging at your opponents right side. Yet, that is speculation on my part, not Biblical and I don't see a reason to link the two passages together beyond the simple fact a the right ear was involved, but nothing more significant than that. 154 | Everybody dies with recent sins | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 231572
Very well put. I know being raised Pentecostal, I was afraid that I would commit a sin just before I died and not get into heaven. Once I realized my salvation is based only on my acceptance of God's gift and that God does all the work, it has dramatically changed my view. I went from looking at God as one who has His finger on the button just waiting to send me to hell, to a Father who has done everything to allow me to join Him. My relationship changed from a list of I can't do this, to a list of I want to do this. I don't understand why God loves me the way He does, from my mindset, I could find a whole lot of other people to love rather than me. Yet, He does and I know this because His Word tells me so. Maybe this children’s song can express it best for me: Jesus loves me! This I know, For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong; They are weak, but He is strong. Chorus: Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so. Jesus loves me! This I know, As He loved so long ago, Taking children on His knee, Saying, “Let them come to Me.” Chorus Jesus loves me when I'm good, When I do the things I should, Jesus loves me when I'm bad, Though it makes Him very sad. Chorus Jesus loves me still today, Walking with me on my way, Wanting as a friend to give Light and love to all who live. Chorus Jesus loves me! He who died Heaven’s gate to open wide; He will wash away my sin, Let His little child come in. Chorus Jesus loves me! Loves me still Tho' I'm very weak and ill; That I might from sin be free Bled and died upon the tree. Chorus Jesus loves me! He will stay Close beside me all the way; Thou hast bled and died for me, I will henceforth live for Thee. Brad |

155 | rapture of the church: true or false | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 231634
Since I don't know what his belief is, it is hard to say if it is Biblical based or not. When it comes to the rapture, there are three main views: Pretribulation, midtribulation, and posttribulation. If memory serves me correctly there are also a couple of variants of these. Each one of these viewpoints use Scripture to try to support their view point. I know good Christian men and women that believe in each of these categories. Which one is right? Research, compare the research to the Bible, and pray for wisdom from the Holy Spirit to help you discern the right answer. Brad |

156 | In Daniel 3:25... | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 231987
Doing some quick research, in Revelation, the term translated 'angel' in the KJV has a literal meaning of one eagle. In Daniel, looking quickly, modern translations all have 'son of gods' or footnote making that a possible translation. Reading the phrase in context, in my mind since King Nebuchadnezzar was the one speaking and my understanding is that their beliefs involved mutliple gods, why would he refer to the Son of God, when in his mind it would of been one of the sons of gods? Does that make since? Typing quickly at work, so hopefully someone can give you more detail answer. Brad |

157 | Question on Hymn of Invitation tradition | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 232117
If I understand your question correctly, you have more than one issue. The first is you don't like the use of 'invite' or 'invitation' to describe the act of accepting Christ's salvation by grace. The second issue is the ceremony that the church uses. Acts 4:12 explains that there is only one name we can be saved under. So how do we become ‘saved’? Ephesians 2:1-9 explains we have very little to do in our own salvation, it is totally up to God’s saving grace. Romans 10:9 explains how we accept God’s gift of salvation. We do two things, confess and believe. Does the church ceremony save some one? No, but it does provide a means for the message of salvation to be communicated to an individual. So does the ceremony have value? Only in the aspect it is a means of delivering the message of the Good News. Is the word ‘invite’ the best word? I looked up the definition of 'invite' which is to request the presence or participation of; formal request. In my mind, using the word 'invite' doesn't cross any Scriptural boundaries. Are there better words, it truly depends on your audience. If you start talking to someone about justification or sanctification that has just walked in off the street, you may quickly lose them using ‘biblical’ terms on concepts that are foreign to them. Does that mean we dummy down everything? Only to a point of having the time to bring the new believe up and only as far as not compromising the Gospel. When you start teaching your child to read, you don’t hand him a copy of War and Peace, but you start out with See Spot Run. As you teach and train the child you introduce the deeper concepts based on the simple basic principles. As our culture has become more Scripturally illiterate, some of the concepts have to be simplified until we can educate them (Sunday School, small groups, etc.). Do we have to be careful with the terms we use? Yes! Do we have to be careful about placing to much value on a ‘ceremony’ or particular action? Yes! As a church, if all we ever do is offer a Sunday ‘invitation’ to accept Christ and then send the new believer out the door, we are greatly failing in our charge. Matthew 28:19 Brad |

158 | down syndrome | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 232248
Just because a person has Down syndrome, doesn't mean the individual is saved. Just because the person has Down syndrome, doesn't mean that the individual can't understand the concept of God's grace and mercy. On the contrary, I have met a few who suffer from Down syndrome and they had a better understanding of God's love than I did (Matthew 19:14). We forget that we don't have to come up to God's level to meet Him, He came down to our level to meet us. (John 3:16) Brad |

159 | why is satan capitalizes in the bible | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 232407
It isn't a Bible question, but a question of proper English. In the English language, proper names (Satan) are supposed to be capitalized. Brad |

160 | do dogd have a soul? | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 232466
Don't you know, all dogs go to heaven! Okay, maybe not, then again maybe so. The Bible doesn't say directly, but man is the only creature created in God's image. GotQuestions.org has an article on this topic. http://www.gotquestions.org/pets-heaven.html Brad PS-I wasn't making fun of your question, been a long day at work and I'm tired. I do entertain the thought of someday seeing my long lost companions, but I know regardless if they are there or not, heaven will be a wonderful place beyond anything we can imagine. |
