141 | Where does it say no sin is greater? | Bible general Archive 3 | Wild Olive Shoot | 168290
Minna, Your Grandfather may be thinking of the following: James 2:10,11 (KJV) 10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. 11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. However, it doesn’t convey that one sin is the same as the other or that one is greater than another. It speaks to transgressing the whole law, not the whole of the law. …”but the sense is, that he is guilty of the breach of the whole law, though not of the whole of the law; as he that breaks anyone condition of a covenant, which may consist of many, though he does not violate every condition, yet breaks the whole covenant; so he that transgresses in anyone point of the law, breaks the whole, commits sin, and is deserving of death, and is treated by the law as a transgressor of it, let it be in what instance it will.” – John Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible “Whosoever shall keep the whole law, if he offend in one point, wilfully, avowedly, and with continuance, and so as to think he shall be excused in some matters because of his obedience in others, he is guilty of all; that is, he incurs the same penalty, and is liable to the same punishment, by the sentence of the law, as if he had broken it in other points as well as that he stands chargeable with. Not that all sins are equal, but that all carry the same contempt of the authority of the Lawgiver, and so bind over to such punishment as is threatened on the breach of that law.” – Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible With the previous answers that have been posted, the conclusion is that obviously, some sins are greater than others. Question: "Are all sins equal to God?" Answer: Jesus does equate committing adultery with having lust in your heart (Matthew 5:27-28) and committing murder with having hatred in your heart (Matthew 5:21-22). However, this does not mean the sins are equal. What Jesus was trying to get across to the Pharisees was that it is still sin even if you only think about or want to do the act. The religious leaders of Jesus’ day taught people that it was okay to think about anything you wanted to, as long as you didn’t act on those desires. Jesus is forcing them to realize that God judges a person’s thoughts as well as their actions. Jesus proclaimed that our actions are the results of what is in our hearts (Matthew 12:34). So, although Jesus said that lust and adultery are both sins – that does not mean they are equal. It is much worse to actually murder a person than it is to simply hate them – even though they are both sinful in God’s sight. http://www.gotquestions.org/sins-equal.html © Copyright 2002-2006 Got Questions Ministries. 142 | Why baptize Jesus? | Mark 1:9 | Wild Olive Shoot | 168164
“It may reasonably be inquired what should be Christ's view in desiring to be baptized; it could not be to take away original or actual sin, since he had neither; nor has baptism any such efficacy to do this, in those who have either or both: but, it was to show his approbation of John's baptism, and to bear a testimony of it, that it was from heaven; and also that he himself might receive a testimony both from heaven, and from John, that he was the Son of God and true Messiah, before he entered upon his public ministry, into which he was in some measure initiated and installed hereby; and moreover, to set an example to his followers, and thereby engage their attention and subjection to this ordinance; and, in a word, as he himself says, to fulfil all righteousness.” – John Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible The text never says that Jesus repented or confessed. Others did as in Matthew 3:6 it states confessed their sins. Christ never did, never had to. Matthew 3:6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. Matthew 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: To clarify, it was mentioned previously that at His baptism, Jesus took on a new relationship with God. Note: Christ, as God, did not need to receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit conceived Him. His relationship with God as God never changed. Even as He took on His humanity, He maintained His divinity. WOS |

144 | Jesus comitted a suicide ? | 1 John 3:16 | Wild Olive Shoot | 165512
You misunderstand what it was that Christ did for you. He did not take His own life, He gave it up for you. He gave, He didn’t take. He gave all and took nothing. 1 John 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. Concerning Job, yes, he desired death but never considered taking his own life, he begged God to do it, and was wrong in requesting it. “How uneasy soever the soul's confinement in the body may be, it must by no means break prison, but wait for a fair discharge.” – Matthew Henry “The vanity of human life; so uncertain a good is it that it often proves men's greatest burden and nothing is so desirable as to get clear of it. Let grace make us willing to part with it whenever God calls; for it may so happen that even sense may make us desirous to part with it before he calls.” – Matthew Henry We must hate our lives in this world in comparison to the “other world”. We must love it more in order to obtain it. John 12:24-26: 24Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. 25He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. 26If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. You can only be saved by the grace of God, through faith in Christ. Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Smoking is a sin as you purposely harm the Temple of God. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 19What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. Yes you are lying. WOS |

145 | Confronting another about sin | 1 Tim 5:14 | Wild Olive Shoot | 165470
Dear drcinva, First of all, I suggest you seek counseling from your pastor or other trusted and well learned church member, or family member, on how it may be best to handle your dilemma. Secondly, you need to be wise enough, discerning enough and mindful enough to eliminate yourself from situations that may lead to harm, no matter how unintentional and innocent it may have appeared in the onset. I pray in the meantime, you take this experience and learn from it and can use it to advise others as well. Proverbs 3:21-23 (KJV) 21My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: 22So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. 23Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. Proverbs 14:15-16 (KJV) 15The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going. 16A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident. WOS |

Dear saltoftheearth, Here are a couple links I think may help. http://www.blueletterbible.org/faq/gambling.html http://www.gotquestions.org/gambling-sin.html See also 1 Corinthians 8 and Romans 14. I know it is talking about a different subject but I feel the same principle applies. If your conscience has you apprehensive and you make that known, then by all means, your friend should respond accordingly. The least you should do is adhere to your stance for your own conscience’s sake. WOS |

148 | We have seen Jesus... | 1 Timothy | Wild Olive Shoot | 165226
Dear Shythiyl, Matthew Henry claimed with reference to Ephesians 3:18-19: “There is a spiritual manifestation of Christ and his love made to all believers. When he enlightens their minds to know his love, and the dimensions of it enlivens their graces, and draws them into exercise, and thus enlarges their comforts in himself - when he clears up the evidences of their interest in him, and gives them tokens of his love, experience of his tenderness, and earnests of his kingdom and glory, - then he manifests himself to them; and Christ is manifested to none but those to whom he is pleased to manifest himself.” Ephesians 3:14-19(KJV) 14For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. In support I would offer: Colossians 2:9For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: Proverbs 8:17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me. It’s the love of God that is manifested to us and the manifestation of that love that we emulate to others as well. And it’s conditional: that we love Him and that is made known through observing and keeping his commandments, which is love in its fullness. Romans 8:38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 149 | Difference b/w pleasing God vs man | Matt 6:1 | Wild Olive Shoot | 164267
Jaci, Mat 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Mat 5:15 Neither do men light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the house. Mat 5:16 Even so let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Only you can know your true motives for performing what is seemingly an honorable attempt to adhere to Luke 6:31. If the tables were reversed, would you expect the other to do the same? Others and their perception of what you may possibly do will be greatly affected by how you yourself present the situation. In the verses I inserted above, I see that Christ was telling us that we are to let others see our good works. But I also see that we are to let those good works speak for themselves. And keep in mind that we are discerning of one another based on the evidences that our life and activities have presented not just what each of us profess. If you boast about such an act, you surely take the focus from the act itself, which should be used to glorify God and not your own self. Matthew Henry wrote: “We must do good works that may be seen to the edification of others, but not that they may be seen to our own ostentation; we are bid to pray in secret, and what lies between God and our souls, must be kept to ourselves; but that which is of itself open and obvious to the sight of men, we must study to make congruous to our profession, and praiseworthy, Phi_4:8. Those about us must not only hear our good words, but see our good works; that they may be convinced that religion is more than a bare name, and that we do not only make a profession of it, but abide under the power of it.”… … “We must not only endeavor to glorify God ourselves, but we must do all we can to bring others to glorify him. The sight of our good works will do this, by furnishing them, 1. With matter for praise. “Let them see your good works, that they may see the power of God's grace in you, and may thank him for it, and give him the glory of it, who has given such power unto men.” 2. With motives of piety. “Let them see your good works, that they may be convinced of the truth and excellency of the Christian religion, may be provoked by a holy emulation to imitate your good works, and so may glorify God.” I get the sense that if motives are true and pure, there is no need whatsoever to boast of the works we do, the acts will speak far more captivating words than you could ever use to justify them. And most importantly, it is God rather than us, who is worthy of the praise to begin with. Excerpt from a poem written by Rhea F. Miller in which George Beverly Shea put to music and entitled it "I'd Rather Have Jesus": I'd rather have Jesus than men's applause; I'd rather be faithful to His dear cause; I'd rather have Jesus than world-wide fame; I'd rather be true to His holy name: Just some thoughts. Just some food for thought: Iron may sharpen iron, but unrefined iron… how useful is it? Before it is utilized it must be refined, changed from its natural state into a condition that allows it to be useful. You could surmise that the contentious person is unrefined in the process, therefore not beneficial or receptive in their contentious state. Just a thought. WOS |

152 | How to save a non-bible believer? | Ps 3:8 | Wild Olive Shoot | 162323
To add to the already great advice you have been given, I would like to share a quote I've read that may assist you with your questions. John 13:10-11(KJV) 10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. 11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. “How great is the example You showed of enduring evil! How great, too, is Your model of humility! How is it that the Lord gave us this example to show us that we shouldn’t give up counseling our neighbors even if they aren’t affected by our words? For incurable wounds are wounds that can’t be healed by harsh medications or by more pleasant ones. Similarly, the soul, when it has been taken captive, gives itself up to wickedness, refuses to consider what is profitable for it, and won’t accept goodness despite great counsel. As if it is deaf, it won’t benefit from any advice. Not that it can’t, but it won’t. This happened is Judas’s case. Nevertheless, Christ, although He knew this beforehand, didn’t ever stop doing everything to counsel him. Since we know that Jesus practiced this, we also should never stop striving to set the careless right even if it seems no good comes from our counsel.” -- Dionysius of Alexandria His Passion ©2004 by Integrity Publishers WOS |

153 | Our sins affect our children. | Ezek 18:20 | Wild Olive Shoot | 161704
Hi smwatkin, Question: "Are children punished for the sins of their parents?" Answer: Ezekiel 18:20 tells us, “The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.” Exodus 20:5 declares, "You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me." Do these Scriptures contradict each other? The difference between Ezekiel 18:20 and Exodus 20:5 is that while Exodus 20:5 is speaking of consequences, Ezekiel 18:20 is speaking of punishment. Exodus 20:5 is saying that the consequences of a man’s sins can be felt generations later. Ezekiel 18:20 is saying that sons should not be punished for their father’s sins. God does not hold us accountable for the sins of our parents, but we sometimes suffer as a result of the sins our parents committed. http://www.gotquestions.org/parents-sin.html Copyright 2002-2005 Got Questions Ministries.
