141 | ARE WE MARIED | 1 Cor 7:1 | Shelly | 180086
What country are you in? Different countries have different laws. That would not be a valid marriage in the country I live in.
142 | No guilt in women cutting their hair? | 1 Cor 11:5 | Shelly | 70162
I thought there were several different cultures in the Bible, and the women who had long hair were the women in Corinth - not women everywhere.
143 | Woman head covering valid for today? | 1 Cor 11:10 | Shelly | 4994
I don't think it says in the Old Testament that the women used to have head coverings. This would mean that no coverings is okay, and that the Corinthians brought in something new, that is not right or wrong. We need to read it in the context of the situation in Corinth. The matter of wearing hats or head coverings, although seemingly insignificant, had become a big problem because two cultural backgrounds were colliding. Jewish women always covered their heads in worship. For a woman to uncover her head in public was a sign of loose morals. On the other hand, Greek women may have been used to worshiping without head coverings. |

144 | Tilthe calculation:On gross or net pay? | 2 Cor 9:1 | Shelly | 13114
I believe it's on the gross wage. Depends on how many deductions you have, if you do it after deductions, there could be next to no money left. eg. after tax, after health insurance, after canteen meals, after mortgage payment. And if you are looking at your net pay as an excuse to give God less, then you could even get some more deductions added to you pay, which proves it can't be right. Try giving God the tithe on your gross, and I'm sure He'll bless you like He has us. Malachi 3:10b Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. Genesis 14:20b Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything. Luke 18:12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get. Hebrews 7:2a and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. |

145 | What does adoption mean this verse | Eph 1:5 | Shelly | 69310
NIV Bible study notes say: Eph 1:5 "Predestined" means marked out beforehand. This is another way of saying that salvation is God's work and not our own doing. In his infinite love, God has adopted us as his own children. Through Jesus' sacrifice, he has brought us into his family and made us heirs along with Jesus (Romans 8:17). In Roman law, adopted children had the same rights and privileges as biological children, even if they had been slaves. Paul uses this term to show how strong our relationship to God is. Have you entered into this loving relationship with God? For more on the meaning of adoption, see Galatians 4:5-7. |

146 | Valid 'gifts?' | Eph 4:11 | Shelly | 144187
I believe they are still valid today - we see them in our own church here; I think they should be evident in all (growing) churches. NIV Study Bible notes says: Eph 4:11, 12 Our oneness in Christ does not destroy our individuality. The Holy Spirit has given each Christian special gifts for building up the church. Now that we have these gifts, it is crucial to use them. Are you spiritually mature, exercising the gifts God has given you? If you know what your gifts are, look for opportunities to serve. If you don't know, ask God to show you, perhaps with the help of your minister or Christian friends. Then, as you begin to recognize your special area of service, use your gifts to strengthen and encourage the church. |

147 | 14 yr old dressing inappropriately-HELP! | Eph 6:1 | Shelly | 174897
Hi. I can relate to your concerns. We have 2 teenage daughters, but thankfully, they don't dress like all the others do. Our pastor said something on Sunday that reminded me of your plight. He said, "Just because the rest of society is doing a certain thing, doesn't mean that it's right, and God has a better plan for your life." |

148 | What does this verse mean? | Phil 4:7 | Shelly | 114295
NIV Study Bible notes says on Phil 4:7. God's peace is different from the world's peace (see John 14:27). True peace is not found in positive thinking, in absence of conflict, or in good feelings. It comes from knowing that God is in control. Our citizenship in Christ's kingdom is sure, our destiny is set, and we can have victory over sin. Let God's peace guard your heart against anxiety. |

149 | Where's the verse , " It's not about us | Col 1:16 | Shelly | 139955
I can't find "It's not about us," but I have heard of the phrase "It's not about me" before, but I don't think that's scripture either. The following verse is one that says it's all about God: Col. 1:16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. |

153 | can single men be an elder in the church | 1 Tim 3:1 | Shelly | 116506
I don't see why not - I don't think the Bible actually says yes or no. It just says: Titus 1:6 An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. |

154 | Role of the Elders - need references | Titus 1:6 | Shelly | 92077
Titus 1:6-9 An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. [7] Since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he must be blameless--not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. [8] Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. [9] He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
155 | explain come unto mount si'on | Hebrews | Shelly | 3576
As Christians, we are citizens of the heavenly Jerusalem right now, because Christ rules our lives, the Holy Spirit is always with us, and we experience close fellowship with other believers. The full and ultimate rewards and reality of the heavenly Jerusalem are depicted in Revelation 21. |

156 | Do I need to go to church | Hebrews | Shelly | 48702
Yes, I believe you DO need to go to church. Hebrews 10:25 says: "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another; and all the more as you see the Day approaching." How are you supposed to tithe, support the Church, learn more about Jesus, and become more like Jesus if you don't go to Church and spend more time with other believers? |

157 | What is reformation? | Heb 9:10 | Shelly | 6014
My NIV bible says: Hebrews 9:10 They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings--external regulations applying until the time of the new order. The Bible notes say: 9:10 The people had to keep the Old Testament dietary laws and ceremonial cleansing laws until Christ came with God's new and better way. |

158 | looking for a certain scripture | Heb 10:25 | Shelly | 146438
KJV: Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. NIV: Hebrews 10:25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching. |

159 | Can 2 people say vows and be married? | Heb 13:4 | Shelly | 137881
I imagine different countries have different laws in regards to marriage. What country do these people live in? In my country, you can't just say vows and be married - it has to be done with a registered marriage celebrant. If they have never been properly married, then there is no divorce either. Here's one scripture about marriage - Hebrews 13:4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. |

160 | Why so many destined for Hell? | 1 Pet 2:8 | Shelly | 70296
God created us hoping that we would spend eternity with Him in Heaven, but He gave us that choice to make. If we believe and confess in Him, then we will be saved. If we don't, we go to hell. Luke 13:5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish." John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 10:9-10 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. If you don't know whether you are saved or not, then I suggest you get to a good Bible-believing Church. If you are saved, you WILL go to Heaven and you will not have "to accept that we may have to suffer forever". |
