121 | Easter | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 227413
If my memory serves me correctly, the pagan part comes in from the German goddess of fertility (word Easter is believed to have derived from Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility, which is part of the reason for the Easter bunny and the eggs). One can also make the argument that the word Easter did not come from the mistranslation of the word, but was a word that was made to designate the time period of Jesus death and resurrection. Brad |

124 | Easter | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 227409
Lots of thoughts cross my mind, part of me wants to argue with your husband because of his religious beliefs in JW. Part of me appreciates the stand that he is taking in doing what he believes is right for him and his household. The other part of me, which I try to let win out more and more but don’t succeed in allowing it to win enough, is trying to let what God would do come out in my answers. I’m trying to learn to temper my answer in love, doesn’t mean that I have to agree with the individual, but I do need to try to show Christ like love. In your situation, you are dealing with your husband and have a husband/wife relationship to consider. Will trying to prove your husband right or wrong over the Easter holiday bring him closer to Jesus Christ? If proving him wrong will make you feel better, but drive him further away from Christ, I would discourage you from doing so. If you and your husband can have open discussion that will allow you to witness and share your beliefs with him using the reason behind why you celebrate Easter, then yes by all means discuss away. Yes, I know I still haven’t answered your question yet, but I just want to make sure that the discussion you may have with your husband is working on building up and not destroying. Yes, “Easter” is a pagan holiday and “Easter” is a Christian holiday. If you want to quickly defuse the debate, tell him you are not celebrating ‘Easter’ but you are celebrating ‘Resurrection Day’. Truly as a Christian, that is what we are celebrating, the day that our Savior arose from the grave. So rather you call the day ‘Easter’ or ‘Resurrection Day’, I would be celebrating and do celebrate not for any pagan reason, but for the real reason. As I said before, I hide eggs and eat chocolate (too much chocolate) because we enjoy it and celebrate our family together and the freedom that Christ death and resurrection has given us from sin to be enjoy life knowing we are no longer under the eternal damnation which we rightly deserve, but a live in Christ through the greatest gift HE could ever give. SO regardless of what you call the day, I would say it is well worth celebrating! Brad |

126 | easter eggs | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 227384
I hide eggs because my daughter and nieces and nephews have fun finding them and I like hiding them. Beyond that, there is nothing in the Bible about hiding eggs. It is actually a pagan custom about new life. Sometimes we do things just because they are fun, which having fun is Biblical. We aren't called to sit aorund and have frowns on our faces all day long, but to love, peace, and joy. Brad |

127 | Why did God rename people in the bible. | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 227382
Must be a homework question, because another person posted the same question before you. Brad |

128 | Why does God give people new names? | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 227378
Names have meanings. Traditionally and even in some cases today people are named because of the meaning of the name, not just because his or her parents liked the sound of the name. Look at the old name in the Bible and then look at the new name in the Bible finding the meaning for both. Compare the meanings and you can usually figure out why God gave that individual a new name. 130 | pray before each meal | NT general | BMyers | 226726
There is no Bible verse that says we have to prayer before we eat and some even prayer after they eat. If memory serves me correctly, the practice or pattern of praying before we eat comes from Jesus and I think Paul. Jesus prayed before he feed the crowds. Paul prayed in Acts 27 before they ate. More important is the attitude and remembering to be thankful for our blessing and that these blessings are from God. Eph 5:20 Phil 4:6 1 Thess 5:18 Brad |

131 | Should christians celebrate Valentine? | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 226212
Actually, Saint Valentine's Day was setup by the Catholic Church and remained an official church holiday until the late 1960's or early 1970's. Since the source of the original holiday and information concerning the Saint Valentine is limited, the church decided to remove the holiday, but not forbid it. Is there a reason for a Christian to celebrate this holiday? Yes. We are told in Scripture to celebrate the wife of your youth (Proverbs 5:18). In the hustle and bustle of modern life, we sometimes take for granted the ones closest to us and the spouse unfortunately can became the one most unappreciated. Taking the time to let your spouse know how much you appreciate should come more than just on Valentine's day, but at least we have one day that for us men helps give us a big reminder to say to the lady in our life how much they mean to us and how much she is appreciated. 132 | Jehovah.Jesus.The Same. | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 225976
Actually, God has several names in the Old Testament. If you read the preface of your Bible, you will see some of the various names God is called and how it is translated in your version of the Bible (i.e. all capital letters of the word LORD). YHWH is name of GOD in the Old Testament. I believe the word Jehovah came about in the Latin translation of the Bible. Jesus, which is the English translation of the Latin or Greek word for the Hebrew name Joshua into English. I have written different Bible publishers including Lockman and the general answer is the name Jesus is based on the Greek spelling of Joshua (Iesous). Could you imagine if we changed the name of Jesus to Joshua in the English Bible the backlash that would create? Below is part of an e-mail I received from one of the Bible publishing companies: The word "Jesus" is based on the Greek word, not the Hebrew word. The Greek word, Iesous, which was used by the translators of the Greek OT to translate Joshua in the Hebrew OT, is transliterated into English Bibles as Jesus. As you may know, German Bibles transliterated it the same, but their "J" sounds like a "Y," so that their name is Yesu or Yesous. Modern Jewish Christians pronounce it "Yeshua." Note that in English, our sound "J" is a sound that does not occur in any ancient language. In essence, therefore, the name Jesus is used in English Bibles because of tradition (and because of the Greek word "Iesous"). Brad |

133 | where does jesus die and go visit hell? | Luke 23:43 | BMyers | 225974
The Bible doesn't say that Jesus went to hell. That statement is from the Apostles' Creed, not the Bible. Also, you have to remember the English word 'hell' is actually three different Greek words in the New Testament translated as the English word hell (Hades, Gehenna, tartaroo). In the Old Testament, some translations translate Sheol as hell. Brad |

135 | Who put chapter numbres in Bile? | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 225960
It depends, are you asking about the Latin Bible or the English Bible? Are you asking about the first person to divide the Bible into chapters and verses or are you asking who came up with the current division of chapter and verses we use? Brad |

136 | Are we born a sinner or do we become one | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 225867
Actually, it is both. The Son is the solution for the sin issue. You are correct, Jesus is the propitiation for our sin and this blessing has made available to all who repent and believe. 1Jn 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1Jn 1:10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 139 | Are we born a sinner or do we become one | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 225854
Rom 3:9 What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, Rom 3:10 as it is written: "None is righteous, no, not one; Rom 3:11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. Rom 3:12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one. (ESV) 1Co 15:21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 1Co 15:22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.(ESV) Psa 51:5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. (ESV) So this brings up the question what happens to a baby/child that dies before he/she is able to make a decision to follow Christ? Is there such a thing as age of accountability? If so, where is it in the Bible? Does 1 John 2:2 give us an answer? Sorry, I occasionally get off chasing rabbits as our pastor says. In my opinion, we are born sinners. You question does bring up another thought, if a baby is sinless, then why didn’t God just have us kill a baby instead of sending His sinless son to be the sacrifice? Brad |

140 | Where is decorating trees for pagan? | Jeremiah | BMyers | 225421
A few people have tried to make the argument that you can't have a tree based on Jeremiah chapter 10 Jer 10:1 Hear the word that the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel. Jer 10:2 Thus says the LORD: "Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them, Jer 10:3 for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. Jer 10:4 They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. Jer 10:5 Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good." Jer 10:6 There is none like you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is great in might. Jer 10:7 Who would not fear you, O King of the nations? For this is your due; for among all the wise ones of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like you. Jer 10:8 They are both stupid and foolish; the instruction of idols is but wood! Jer 10:9 Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz. They are the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith; their clothing is violet and purple; they are all the work of skilled men. Jer 10:10 But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King. At his wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure his indignation. |
