Bible Question: A follow up on my earlier question(just joined so bear with me on being a novice)About the name changes...correct me if I'm wrong, but God's name in the Old Testament is Jehovah and ind Isaiah 62:2 it is told that He will be known by a new name which the mouth of the Lord shall name.Which in Matthew 1:21 shalt call his name Jesus:for he shall save HIS people from their sins. |
Bible Answer: Actually, God has several names in the Old Testament. If you read the preface of your Bible, you will see some of the various names God is called and how it is translated in your version of the Bible (i.e. all capital letters of the word LORD). YHWH is name of GOD in the Old Testament. I believe the word Jehovah came about in the Latin translation of the Bible. Jesus, which is the English translation of the Latin or Greek word for the Hebrew name Joshua into English. I have written different Bible publishers including Lockman and the general answer is the name Jesus is based on the Greek spelling of Joshua (Iesous). Could you imagine if we changed the name of Jesus to Joshua in the English Bible the backlash that would create? Below is part of an e-mail I received from one of the Bible publishing companies: The word "Jesus" is based on the Greek word, not the Hebrew word. The Greek word, Iesous, which was used by the translators of the Greek OT to translate Joshua in the Hebrew OT, is transliterated into English Bibles as Jesus. As you may know, German Bibles transliterated it the same, but their "J" sounds like a "Y," so that their name is Yesu or Yesous. Modern Jewish Christians pronounce it "Yeshua." Note that in English, our sound "J" is a sound that does not occur in any ancient language. In essence, therefore, the name Jesus is used in English Bibles because of tradition (and because of the Greek word "Iesous"). Brad |
