121 | What is the theme of the book of romans? | Romans | jlhetrick | 209090
true... and the Scriptures speak further to this to teach that even that faith isn't anything we accomplish on our own. It too is given by God. Romans 3:11 tells us that "no one understands; no one seeks for God." (ESV) And Ephesians 2:8 says "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, (ESV) How awesome a God we serve. |

Cheri, well put.. it grabs hold because it offers hope. For those who do not know and do not submit to God and His word they can not know that the hope WOF offers is a false hope; not to mention a gross misrepresentation (in the least) of God's holy word.
123 | With Fear and Trembleing | Ephesians | jlhetrick | 208874
Doc- First of all, thank you for taking the time to read and consider the article by Greenwood. Second- thanks for pointing out some of it's blunders (I just finished reading it myself) otherwise many who are younger in the faith may end up doing what many of us have done. That is the quick building of unsound doctrine that will take much time and effort to correct later on. Of course, some will never unlearn it, or better put... replace it with the soundness of Scripture. Note to everyone reading... It's important to ensure that articles and websites we point to are sound in their doctrine. |

124 | What do we have as a conseqence of goda | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 208590
Brother- I agree, and with brother Hank as well. I actually considered, in the brief time I had to respond to Marilyn, a word that would best describe my thoughts. Coming up short, "nothing short of amazed" was the best I could do. Not amazed only, and certainly not in any common, modern day concept; but at least overwhelmed and in awe. Surely those of us who have truly been touched by His grace realize that no words approach it's description. It reminds me of a song I used listen to back in the day (wait, am I old enough to have a back in the day???). It was written by Geoff Moore and Steven Curtis Chapman and titled Listen to Our Hearts. The chorus says: So listen to our hearts Here our spirit sing A song of praise that flows From those you have redeemed We will use the words we know To tell you what an awesome God You are But words are not enough To tell you of our love So listen to our hearts The rest of the lyrics can be found by searching "Listen to Our Hearts Lyrics". In my opinion, it's a good illustration of what you and brother Hank have pointed out here. God bless, Jeff |

125 | What do we need to know about God | John 17:3 | jlhetrick | 208524
jamison- good afternoon. At this point I'm drawing the conclusion (perhaps I'm wrong)that you are not open to instruction. Because this is a bible study forum, perhaps the best approach at this point would be for you to go back to post 208511 and respond to peacebestill. If you demonstrate an honest attempt at that I believe that everyone else will respect that and take you seriously. Give it a shot please. Thanks, Jeff |

126 | What do we need to know about God | John 17:3 | jlhetrick | 208493
Actually Azure, you explained it fine. Your post was easily understandable when read with a basic understanding of "standard theology". Assuming we're talking about orthodox Christian doctrine of course. Jeff |

127 | What do we need to know about God | John 17:3 | jlhetrick | 208489
jamison- may I recommend that you reread Azure's post. You wrote: "it stands to reason that Jesus answered his question". The point here is that attempting to reason without considering context is not a ratinoal approach when trying to discern the message. Consider some important points here including the following. 1. The man confessed to have followed the commandments since his youth. Answer: We know, as did Christ, that this was an impossibility. 2. Was Jesus telling the man that following the commandments and then selling all he had and distributing it to the poor would earn him Heanen? Answer, if you believe that then you rule out that salvation is through Christ and Him alone. One would be advocating salvation by works. Jesus asked the young man an important question. "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone". That's the beginning of the immediate context. Christ then refers to the law, which no man can fully keep. Continue to consider the context. The young ruler never misses a beat. In his own praise of himself he confesses to have kept the law. Christ knew better of course, so why the statement about the man's riches? Was Jesus giving the man a formula for salvation? 1. Follow these commandments. 2. Sell everything you own. 3. Distribute the profits of your sell to the poor. 4. Follow me Of course not and there is no way to rationally draw that conclusion from scripture. Christ was not telling the man how to get to Heaven. He was clearly showing the man the condition of his own heart. He was self-righteous and not willing to part from his earthly riches. Even if Heaven were available to him for a price (which it was and is not), the man was not willing to pay it. By the way, if we "step outside the box of standard theology.." where do you think we would be standing??? Isn't that a dangerous and scary place to go? God bless, Jeff |

Yes, that race is in the bible. The different "races" were recognized long before Darwin so I'm not sure why you threw that in there. Yes, Race is in the bible. I've already provided the references. It's not an issue of debate for me and we could go about defining and redefining the word . To avoid further confusion I'll provide the definition I am using. a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock : a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics (the English race) (Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary). There is nothing in my statements that would, or should, cause anyone to draw the conclusion that I am saying that there are different species of people. Sorry if that was the impression you got. God bless, Jeff |

Sister Azure- You wrote: "I think the sole purpose of any modes used must be helpful to draw people's focus on God. This is my main concern. If the mode (be it dancing, singing, playing instruments...) easily distract people's attention, it is better not to use it." Thank you for bringing that to the attention of the forum. It's wonderful to hear/see, especially coming from someone who is (or recently was) involved in leading praise and worship in her local church. While I acknowledge that I often fall short of the mark, I also acknowledge that everything we say and do should be in praise and adoration of His holiness. Too often we see the portion of the local services most commonly referred to as the praise and worship turn in to anything but. Or at least many of us have seen this to be true. Some are guilty of coming before the congregation singing, dancing, and other activities which appear to be more of a focus on "look at me" "listen to how beatiful I can sing", or even... "look at what the children were able to learn to perform.." I'm not trying to be overly critical, just pointing to my understanding of how it should be vs. how it often appears to be as I agree with you. So that I don't appear to be simply pointing my finger, let me share. I'm no preacher, but I have been asked to give the message from the pulpit on more than one occasion when the pastor would be out of town, etc. While I prepared the massages with fervent prayer and lengthy committed study... I wonder just how much I detracted from His message out of concern for my own presentation. Thanks again for your comments and God bless, Jeff |

Hello Val- actually the Bible does speak of race, both as it pertains to humans distinct from other humans and to humankind being a "race" distinct to all other creatures. I would include the Scripture references but it might be more fun to do a word study. God bless, Jeff |
