daycare, My answers would be: You’re not born again unless the Holy Spirit indwells you and no: John 3:5 (NASB) Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Philippians 2:13 (Amp) [Not in your own strength] for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight. 122 | Meaning of John 3 verse 8? | John 3:8 | Wild Olive Shoot | 156633
It wasn’t clear to Nicodemus at the time either (or he was rejecting it for other reasons) thus his follow up in v9, “John 3:9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?†The short answer pertaining to the “wind†is that it signifies that we cannot control the work of the Holy Spirit. His work is carried out in ways we cannot predict nor understand. As we cannot control our physical birth, neither can we control our spiritual birth for it is totally a gift from God. “Secondly, It is compared to wind: The wind bloweth where it listeth, so is every one that is born of the Spirit, Joh_3:8. The same word (pneuma) signifies both the wind and the Spirit. The Spirit came upon the apostles in a rushing mighty wind (Act_2:2), his strong influences on the hearts of sinners are compared to the breathing of the wind (Eze_37:9), and his sweet influences on the souls of saints to the north and south wind, Son_4:16. This comparison is here used to show, 1. That the Spirit, in regeneration, works arbitrarily, and as a free agent. The wind bloweth where it listeth for us, and does not attend our order, nor is subject to our command. God directs it; it fulfils his word, Psa_148:8. The Spirit dispenses his influences where, and when, on whom, and in what measure and degree, he pleases, dividing to every man severally as he will, 1Co_12:11. 2. That he works powerfully, and with evident effects: Thou hearest the sound thereof; though its causes are hidden, its effects are manifest. When the soul is brought to mourn for sin, to groan under the burden of corruption, to breathe after Christ, to cry Abba - Father, then we hear the sound of the Spirit, we find he is at work, as Act_9:11, Behold he prayeth. 3. That he works mysteriously, and in secret hidden ways: Thou canst not tell whence it comes, nor whither it goes. How it gathers and how it spends its strength is a riddle to us; so the manner and methods of the Spirit's working are a mystery. Which way went the Spirit? 1Ki_22:24. See Ecc_11:5, and compare it with Psa_139:14.†– Matthew Henry WOS |

123 | Who exactly is Jesus referring to | John 3:11 | Wild Olive Shoot | 156643
Arguably, some see this as Christ referring to those that bore witness to Him on Earth, John and the preceding prophets. Some also consider Christ to be speaking in the plural of His own self since the Father was with him and the Holy Spirit was upon Him. The first is more practical to me since Nicodemus was a “Jewish teacher†as pointed out. He should have been well aware of what the prophets taught concerning these things. It seems Nicodemus was knowledgeable concerning what the prophets wrote but didn’t understand what they spoke and wrote regarding the Messiah. WOS |

124 | What is the OT role of the Holy Spirit? | John 3:11 | Wild Olive Shoot | 157018
The Holy Spirit has (in the past and presently) many functions and roles. Below is a brief list of His major roles, functions, and activities. This is not a comprehensive list. 1. Revelation of the Word of God (2 Peter 1:20-21; Acts 1:16; 2 Samuel 23:2-3; John 14:26; 16:14). This indicates the Holy Spirit was the one who carried along the Old Testament prophets, safeguarding their words from error. 2. In the Old Testament, it is indicated that the Holy Spirit regenerated believers (Psalm 51:10; compare to Jesus telling Nicodemus he should have known about this in John 3:1-10). 3. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit indwelt certain select people (Numbers 27:18; Judges 3:10; 1 Samuel 16:12-13). 4. In the Old Testament, it indicates that the Holy Spirit restrained sin (the Spirit's striving, Genesis 6:3). 5. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit gave people ability for service (Exodus 31:2-5; Numbers 27:16-18; Judges 6:34; 1 Samuel 10:10; 16:13). 6. Today, the Holy Spirit baptizes believers. This baptism occurs at the moment of belief, it is experienced by all, and the baptism places the believer in the Body of Christ, the universal church (1 Corinthians 12:12-13; Galatians 3:27-28; Romans 6:3-5; Acts 1:5). 7. Today, the Holy Spirit indwells every believer (Romans 8:9; John 7:37-39; Ephesians 1:13; John 14:16). 8. Today, the Holy Spirit seals every believer (2 Corinthians 1:22; Ephesians 1:13; 4:30). The seal is a mark of ownership showing that believers are the Lord's. 9. Today the Holy Spirit gives gifts to believers for the edification or building up of the body of Christ (Romans 12:3-8; 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4:11-16). 10. Today, the Holy Spirit fills or controls the submissive believer (Ephesians 5:18). 11. He was sent to the church to be the Comforter (John 14:16, 26). 12. He always points a person toward Christ (John 16:13-15). Above taken from: http://www.gotquestions.org/Spirit-today.html WOS |

125 | Jn3:16 ;1Jn2:15 Do/don't love the world | John 3:16 | Wild Olive Shoot | 150895
Starfire, I’m not the expert, there are others within the Forum who can surely enlighten you better that than I. But a quick search at the link listed below would lead me to believe that there is a difference in the use of the word “world” in both of the verses you cited when taken in context. Kosmos is the original word and it is used in the following manner within scripture. Kosmos: 1) an apt and harmonious arrangement or constitution, order, government 2) ornament, decoration, adornment, i.e. the arrangement of the stars, 'the heavenly hosts', as the ornament of the heavens. 1 Pet. 3:3 3) the world, the universe 4) the circle of the earth, the earth 5) the inhabitants of the earth, men, the human family 6) the ungodly multitude; the whole mass of men alienated from God, and therefore hostile to the cause of Christ 7) world affairs, the aggregate of things earthly a) the whole circle of earthly goods, endowments riches, advantages, pleasures, etc, which although hollow and frail and fleeting, stir desire, seduce from God and are obstacles to the cause of Christ 8) any aggregate or general collection of particulars of any sort a) the Gentiles as contrasted to the Jews (Rom. 11:12 etc) b) of believers only, John 1:29; 3:16; 3:17; 6:33; 12:47 1 Cor. 4:9; 2 Cor. 5:19 In John 3:16 it may refer to the inhabitants of the earth, men, the human family. In 1 John 2:15 in context it could be meaning to convey; the ungodly multitude; the whole mass of men alienated from God, and therefore hostile to the cause of Christ or world affairs, the aggregate of things earthly. 127 | to whom should we pray/ | John 5:23 | Wild Olive Shoot | 212833
Hi hopalong, Worship is to be given to God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit only. John 5:23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. Prayer, a part of worship, is to be made in the name of the Son, by the help of the spirit according to His will. John 14:13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 1John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. John 4:23, 24: 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." http://www.reformed.org/documents/wcf_with_proofs/ Stand in His grace, WOS |

129 | Can anyone tell how he understand that? | John 6:54 | Wild Olive Shoot | 150231
If one concludes that our Lord Jesus broke no laws established by God under the Old Covenant, then one would also have to conclude that Jesus was not making a literal reference to His flesh and His blood. Otherwise, Jesus disobeyed the Law established in Leviticus 17:10-11. But in all, I'm just not real certain. However, rather than focusing on individual beliefs and pushing personal opinions that further confuse and ultimately harm someone in search of a beneficial answer, as some have done, I believe you should view the referenced Scripture as such: Some believe the bread and wine actually become Christ's flesh and blood. Some believe the bread and wine do not physically change but Christ is spiritually present. Yet others believe the bread and wine are merely symbolic. Though many will differ in their opinions of what it actually is or what it becomes, the common sentiment among Christians is that the Lord's Supper is an important element and that however we view the bread and wine, when we partake, it strengthens us spiritually. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (NIV)23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. Pertaining to what has been presented in this forum on this issue, and many others, all sides present very strong arguments for their position. But keep in mind, they are human arguments, and they are fallible. What is not fallible however, is the Word of God. Seek it and ask for your answer. Don’t be surprised if you get it. WOS |

132 | God, Are You There? | John 16:8 | Wild Olive Shoot | 207278
Dear MickysMom, I don’t know that I ever extended a welcome to the forum, so welcome. I would first like to point out that maybe, just maybe, you’re doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing, praying, reading and reaching out to Him. I said maybe, simply because, we cannot not truly know your situation just by reading over the forum pages. Your reaching out and questioning may be another way God is acting upon you, again, maybe. What makes you question not noticing a difference to begin with? Why have you felt the need to endeavor to try and notice a difference? Being sovereign and precise in all He does, God will act upon us as He knows best. As He is patient with us, be enduring with Him. Persevere in prayer, learning and desiring to be close to Him. Philippians 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. “We may be confident, or well persuaded, that God not only will not forsake, but that he will finish and crown the work of his own hands. For, as for God, his work is perfect.” – Matthew Henry Charles Spurgeon preached a sermon entitled “The Teaching of The Holy Ghost” of which I have pasted an excerpt below. It is an interesting read that you might find helpful. “And as the Spirit teaches whom he wills, so he teaches when he wills. He has his own hours of instruction, and he will not be limited and bound by us. And then again he teaches as he wills—same by affliction, some by communion; some he teaches by the Word read, some by the Word spoken, some by neither, but directly by his own agency. And so also the Holy Spirit is a sovereign in that he teaches in whatever degree he pleases. He will make one man learn much, while another comprehends but little. Some Christians wear their beards early—they come to a rapid and high degree of maturity, and that on a sudden, while others creep but slowly to the goal, sad are very long in reaching it. Some Christians in early years understand more than others whose hairs have turned grey. The Holy Ghost is a sovereign. He does not have all his pupils in one class, and them all the same lesson by simultaneous instruction; but each man is in a separate class, each man learning a separate lesson. Some beginning at the end of the book, some at the beginning, and some in the middle—some learning one doctrine and some another, some going backwards and some forwards. The Holy Spirit teacheth sovereignly, and giveth to every man according as he wills, but then, wherever he teaches at all, he teaches effectually. He never failed to make us learn yet.” – C.H. Spurgeon http://www.spurgeon.org/sermons/0315.htm I hope this has answered at least in part some of your question and helped in some way. Let me assure you, He is there and He does hear those that belong to Him. Stand in His grace, WOS |

Dear rohitjohn93, Welcome to the forum. If your questions on the forum are sincere questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Many people inquire of a biblical application concerning modern activities. Bottom line however, sometimes they can be a bit difficult to answer and briefly at that. Your’s however shouldn’t be that difficult. The answer you received from BMyers is a sound answer that I’m not going to attempt to expound upon. Take it to heart and read the Scripture references included with the response. I simply want to encourage you to continue to ask questions if you are truly seeking answers. 134 | wat kine of spice they use in Jesus | John 19:40 | Wild Olive Shoot | 201192
Dear Eddy and Tania, Here is what Albert Barnes writes about the spices used: "The Jews were accustomed to use myrrh, aloes, and other aromatics in large quantities when they buried their dead. When they were not regularly embalmed, which was a long and tedious process, they enclosed the spices in the folds of the linen, or wrapped the body in it. Spices were sometimes used in such quantities as to form a “heap or bed,” on which the dead body was laid. Thus it is said of Asa 2Ch_16:14, “they laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odors and spices,” etc. There not being time properly to embalm the body of Jesus, he was buried in this manner. The women who attended him, either not being aware of this, or desirous of showing a further regard for him, returned from the sepulchre and prepared other spices with which to embalm him on the first day of the week, Luk_23:56; Luk_24:1." 135 | any difference between Jesus and Christ? | John 20:31 | Wild Olive Shoot | 203631
Dear k peace, Jesus was His given name. Christ an epithet. It helps us to know who He was and is. Easton's Bible Dictionary states the following concerning Christ: "This name denotes that Jesus was divinely appointed, commissioned, and accredited as the Saviour of men. To believe that “Jesus is the Christ” is to believe that he is the Anointed, the Messiah of the prophets, the Saviour sent of God, that he was, in a word, what he claimed to be. This is to believe the gospel, by the faith of which alone men can be brought unto God. That Jesus is the Christ is the testimony of God, and the faith of this constitutes a Christian." 136 | why nets tore in Luke5:6 nt in John21:11 | John 21:11 | Wild Olive Shoot | 184669
Aminat, See if the following commentary helps you at all. Stand in His grace, WOS "11. Peter went up--into the boat; went aboard. and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three; and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken--The manifest reference here to the former miraculous draught (Lu 5:1-11) furnishes the key to this scene. There the draught was symbolical of the success of their future ministry: While "Peter and all that were with him were astonished at the draught of the fishes which they had taken, Jesus said unto him, Fear not, from henceforth thou shalt catch men." Nay, when first called, in the act of "casting their net into the sea, for they were fishers," the same symbolic reference was made to their secular occupation: "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men" (Mt 4:18, 19). Here, then, if but the same symbolic reference be kept in view, the design of the whole scene will, we think, be clear. The multitude and the size of the fishes they caught symbolically foreshadowed the vast success of their now fast approaching ministry, and this only as a beginning of successive draughts, through the agency of a Christian ministry, till, "as the waters cover the sea, the earth should be full of the knowledge of the Lord." And whereas, at the first miraculous draught, the net "was breaking" through the weight of what it contained--expressive of the difficulty with which, after they had 'caught men,' they would be able to retain, or keep them from escaping back into the world--while here, "for all they were so many, yet was not the net broken," are we not reminded of such sayings as these (Joh 10:28): "I give unto My sheep eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any pluck them out of My hand" [LUTHARDT]? But it is not through the agency of a Christian ministry that all true disciples are gathered. Jesus Himself, by unseen methods, gathers some, who afterwards are recognized by the constituted fishers of men, and mingle with the fruit of their labors. And are not these symbolized by that portion of our Galilean repast which the fishers found, in some unseen way, made ready to their hand?" - Robert Jamieson, A. R. Paul, the apostle, who before was called Saul, after his great travail and unspeakable labors in promoting the Gospel of Christ, suffered also in this first persecution under Nero. Abdias, declareth that under his execution Nero sent two of his esquires, Ferega and Parthemius, to bring him word of his death. They, coming to Paul instructing the people, desired him to pray for them, that they might believe; who told them that shortly after they should believe and be baptised at His sepulcher. This done, the soldiers came and led him out of the city to the place of execution, where he, after his prayers made, gave his neck to the sword. 139 | Pentecost, what is its meaning? | Acts 2:1 | Wild Olive Shoot | 171412
sixteen, Here is some info from Easton’s Bible Dictionary Pentecost -i.e., "fiftieth", found only in the New Testament (Acts 2:1; 20:16; 1 Cor. 16:8). The festival so named is first spoken of in Ex. 23:16 as "the feast of harvest," and again in Ex. 34:22 as "the day of the firstfruits" (Num. 28:26). From the sixteenth of the month of Nisan (the second day of the Passover), seven complete weeks, i.e., forty-nine days, were to be reckoned, and this feast was held on the fiftieth day. The manner in which it was to be kept is described in Lev. 23:15-19; Num. 28:27-29. Besides the sacrifices prescribed for the occasion, every one was to bring to the Lord his "tribute of a free-will offering" (Deut. 16:9-11). The purpose of this feast was to commemorate the completion of the grain harvest. Its distinguishing feature was the offering of "two leavened loaves" made from the new corn of the completed harvest, which, with two lambs, were waved before the Lord as a thank offering. The day of Pentecost is noted in the Christian Church as the day on which the Spirit descended upon the apostles, and on which, under Peter's preaching, so many thousands were converted in Jerusalem (Acts 2). -- Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary WOS |

140 | Where Does It Say That In Acts? | Acts 2:4 | Wild Olive Shoot | 148377
Doesn't Paul tell us in 1 Corinthians 14 that tongues is no more a spiritual gift than prophecy and that prophecy is even a better gift to desire because it is more beneficial to the church? 1 Corinthians 12:28-31 points out that speaking in tongues and the other spiritual gifts listed, are not a requirement of faith because they are given to different individuals as the Spirit seems fit, not everyone receives the same. Interesting to note that when Paul addressed the church in Corinth concerning tongues, there is a sense of reprimand about how he hits on the subject. It is clear to see that the act of speaking in tongues among the Corinthians was disrupting their worship services. How is that helpful to the church? Speaking in tongues is not a requirement of faith. It is simply a spiritual gift bestowed upon us by the Spirit, some have the gift, and others don't. An added note, I believe the spiritual gifts are still active today. Their purpose is to edify individuals and the church. So as long as the church and we exist, there is still a need for edification. Our Scripture is complete only in the essence that it is the complete revelation of God to us. It's not an all-telling book; simply what God wanted us to know. We all know the Bible doesn't answer all questions. All we know now is partial and incomplete, but then we will know fully. Until we are in the presence of God, when there is no longer a need for the spiritual gifts, they will continue to be to build up, serve and strengthen the Body of Christ. However, they are not a requirement of faith, by no means. |
