1 | Why do we delay baptism, not His Supper? | Bible general Archive 4 | Searcher56 | 216765 | ||
God's day to you, Lionheart As I pointed out in post 216712 ... If we study the book of Acts, six of the seven conversion experiences the believers were baptized the same day believed, why we we wait? The exception was Paul. Most don't delay allow any believer from taking the Lord's Supper. We have is kacbwards. Seracher |

Searcher:-) Communion is either open or closed. Unless the pastor gives instructions on who can patrake of the elements then many unbaptised believers might think as long as they have surrendered to Christ they can partake. I have never been in a church that Commmunion was restricted to that churches members only, but I know they do exist. As I think more about it there may well be a valid point in not partaking of Communion until one has been baptised. I am not sure if there is solid scriptyal evidence either for or against partaking of Communion before being baptised. This does merit some indepth study on the subject on my part. Perhaps this might be turned into a situation ethics type of thing. There are several "what if's" in this situation I can think of. For instance, what if, a elderly bedridden person surrenders to Christ, can they partake of Communion? I know you can think other such cases. So Seracher what are your thoughts? What authority does the church have in making the requirements? This is a good subject for dialogue, maybe it will strile up some good thoughts. Blessings justme |

God's day to you, Justme, Communion should be open to all believers, after they examine themselves (1Co 11:23ff). Nowhere in Scripture is the qualification of being baptized first. Questions for you as you study ... -Are believers part of the body of believers the moment they are saved? -Are believers part of the body of Christ the moment they are saved? -Are believers by the Spirit the moment they are saved? ... if we cannot answer yes toeach one, are new believers second class until they do something or reach a certain understanding? No one has ever given me a solid Biblical answer to wait for external baptism. No one has an answer about the book of Acts, where six of the seven conversion experiences the believers were baptized the same day believed, ... and why we we wait. The exception was Paul. Hi justme Jesus Himself declares what the purpose of baptism is for. John 3:1-9 Nowhere within the recitation to Nicodemus, does Jesus mention either inclusion or exclusion within the body. The account of the communion of Christ, by Paul does not say anything about the inclusion, or the excluding of anyone on account of baptism. 1Cor. 11:17-34 but in the middle of these verses. Paul says in vs. 29 "For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body." It could be asked therefore, does someone that has not been baptized, have any reservations for not doing so? It might be advisable then, whenever having a communion service, to read these verses in 1 Cor. letting everyone decide, with particular emphasis placed upon verse 29 and the consequences. Searcher: I see your point. In SBC churches baptisms are generally done within a short time after public confession. I know it is not true for all pastors, but there are some who go over scripture and give the person sonething to study to grow in the spirit and knowledge of Christ. Sometime durring the lessons when the pastor is convienced there is a genuine beliefe in Christ the person is baptised. I have seen many be baptised with no counseling or even a Bible given to the new Christian. Not giving any Scriptual counsel or even a Bible is my pet peave. To ignore some Scriptual counseling and making sure the person has a Bible is as important as baptism. We have to many uncertian believers that are not sure they are born again. This can only be corrected by the Pastors baptising these people. If the person walks in the invitation and askes to be baptised I see nothing to say we should not baptise then ASAP. As long as counseling follows. Many churches do not allow unbaptised people take Communion. Is that wrong? Blessings. justme |

Justme, I had this thought as I was typing the previous post to you. If ensuring "genuine belief" is the reason, then should the church stop people from "going forward" ... I am thnking more for those who are saved outside the four walls. After all, they may be making a false confession. At communion we examine ourseleves, not the pastor. Searcher |
