1 | GOD TURNED HIS BACK ON JESUS WHEN JESUS | Bible general Archive 2 | Ray | 94747
Hi Aixen7z4, Isaiah 59:2, "But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your (God), And your sins have..." 2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore if any man is in (Christ) he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come." 2 Corinthians 5:20, "Therefore, we are ambassadors for (Christ),..." 2 Corinthians 6:1, "...we also urge you not to receive the grace of (God) in vain--" Hebrews 7:26, NKJ, "For such a High (Priest) was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless [innocent], undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; who does not need daily, as those high priests,..." Hebrews 7:22, "so much the more also (Jesus) has become the guarantee of a better covenant. And the former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers, because they were prevented by death from continuing, but He, on the other hand, because He abides forever, holds His priesthood permanently." Hebrews 8:6b, "...by as much as (He) is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises." Hebrews 9:15, "And for this reason (He) is the mediator of a new covenant, in order that since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it." Hebrews 9:28, "so (Christ) also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin,..." 1 Peter 2:24, "and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by (His) wounds you were healed. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls." Isaiah 53:12b, "...Because He poured out (Himself) to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors." Isaiah 54:5, "For your husband is your Maker, Whose name is the Lord of hosts. And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel, Who is called the (God) of all the earth. Isaiah 54:8b, "But with everlasting lovingkindness I will have compassion on you," Says the Lord your (Redeemer)." The parentheses of course are mine for comparisons of the verses. When I put these facts together, I see a holy God who was numbered with the transgressors and for a brief moment (see Isaiah 54:7) felt the forsaking that a man would feel. But He remained the Son of Man, even the Man crying out "My (God), My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" Matthew 27:46. Matthew 27:47, NKJ,"Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, "This Man is calling for Elijah!" Matthew 27:49, NASB, "But the rest of them said, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him." Matthew 27:43, "He trusts in God; let (Him) deliver Him now, if He takes pleasure in Him; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'" And the robbers also who had been crucified with Him were casting the same insult at (Him)." Hebrews 10:29, "How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the (Spirit) of grace?" I suppose we are willing to think that God did forsake Jesus on the cross because we know he was taking our place and we know that that is what we deserved. He had to suffer, not only in his soul (Mt 26:38) but also in his body (Mt 27:35) and in his spirit. He had to die, and spiritual death means separation from God (Ephesians 2). Clearly, if God the Father turned his back on Jesus, it was only for a moment. He would soon receive him into glory. A friend of mine believes Psalm 24:7ff was sung for him in Heaven when he returned. I do not know. One other thought. I wonder if Jesus was uttering the phrase of the forsaken from Psalm 22 in order to show the hearers that he was fulfilling the prophecy. It may be that it was the prophet who had uttered that phrase because he knew that Christ would use it. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had shown to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to die on a cross, he had uttered it. In any case, God did not send any angels to protect him. He did not strike his attackers dead. He stood by, so to speak, while they crucified him, in our place. It must have seemed that God had not only forsaken him but that God himself had turned on him, to punish him for our sins. |

Aixen7z4 You said, "In any case, God did not send any angels to protect him. He did not strike his attackers dead. He stood by, so to speak, while they crucified him, in our place. It must have seemed that God had not only forsaken him but that God himself had turned on him, to punish him for our sins." Your absolutely right and understand that Jesus knew this was going to happen since creation, since Jesus is the Word and Word explained the crucifixion in Psalms 22 Jesus always had that knowledge. Also remember the Human Jesus understood and knew since the time he was able to read Psalm 22 and the prophet Isaiah. In fact Jesus demonstrated this knowledge at the age of 12 when he amazed the teachers with His knowledge and understanding of scripture. Nothing of the crucifixion surprised Jesus He knew exactly what and how it was going to turn out. In fact since God is not limited by time Jesus while in heaven saw himself on the cross both before he step through the womb of a virgin to live among us on earth and now in eternity past. To think Jesus announced in surprise that Why did you forsake me limited Jesus’ deity for neither he nor God were surprised by the events of the day. EdB |

Yes. That's right. It seems that his "Why ..." did not require an answer, but expressed the depths of his suffering and the mystery of it all, to us. Let us hope that many who read of it here appreciate it, in some measure reflecting what he felt.
