Hello CDBJ, Hope all is well with you! I was trying to tell Nolan that we need to be as much like Jesus as we possibly can which I believe is Love. The word Iesous is number 2424 in the Greek part of the Strongs Concordance and is Greek for Jesus. I believe it is important to learn what others believe and I used to have the Jehovah Witness' come to my house for a Bible study. In their Bible, in John 1:1 it says "the Word was a god" and in the KJV I read it says "the Word was God." I believe that Jesus was here as the One and only God and they believe that He was one of many gods. But the way they have written it in their Bible "was a god" is the same as if the "a" was not there. Because by putting the "a" into the text "a" became a transitive verb. I believe from memory, that a transitive verb relates back to the original object and subject of a sentence and the object of John 1:1 is God and the subject is the Word(Jesus). So anyway you want to look at it their translation or the KJV said the same thing grammarically which they chose not to acknowledge. They say with their mouth Jesus was a god but their book says grammarically that Jesus is God and they denied it. So I gave them their "a", but I didn't want to, they insisted. Hopefully I have not confused the issue further, please let me know if I did and I will try again. Thanks for asking for clarification, I want to be clear and understandable.Thanks. Peace in Faith and Hope, Casiv |

Yes, I am afraid that you have confused me a little and you may want to try again. I was under the impression that IESOUS was Greek for Jesus. The, "A" that you described that the JHVH witnesses use in their bible, is translated (THE) in the KJV of the Bible and it is not a verb in the Greek, but a DETERMINER. It is the nominative, masculine, singular of the Greek word HO; it is an article in the English. Actually in the Greek language the absence of the definite article would put more emphasis on the verb, in the English it is just the opposite. I think if my memory serves me right, that the transitive verb gives all the credit to the object. It is the participle that describes its subject as a doer of the action denoted by the verb and the action of the aorist participle always precedes the action of the main verb, or something like that anyway the Koine Greek actually says that God was the Word. The English language turns everything around! Theos en ho logos. CDBJ |

Greetings CDBJ! You are correct - "A" is not a verb! :-) If I may, allow me to address what the JW's try to do with John 1:1. Here is the literal translation of John 1:1: "In beginning was the Word, and the Word was with the God, and God was The Word." There are three clauses in this verse. The subject of each clause in the Word. The Word in each clause includes the definite article to identify that it is the subject. Each clause makes a statement about the Word. 1) The Word has existed since the beginning. 2) The Word was with God. 3) The Word was God. The third clause is the one that the JW's try to twist. They usually try one of two approaches. The either try to make the predicate nomative 'God' into an adjective - "The Word was divine." Or they try to say that since the noun 'God' does not have a definite article, it should be translated as 'a god.' Both approaches are simply wrong. When a noun is used as a predicate nomative, and the subject is articular, then the predicate nomative does not have a definite article - by rule. This rule can be found in just about any Greek grammar. It is called the Granville Sharp rule. Thus, the proper translate is: "The Word was God!" I hope this helps! Hi Tim, Yes, since you mention it I do remember the Grandville Sharp rule. Thanks for the come back. Some times people seem to spend more time trying to explain away God's word instead of just believing it! There are a lot of translations out there. Sometimes for enjoyment I just like to sit down and read the Living Bible. It's not the best but it can sure be a blessing to those that aren't in to the meat of God's word or new believers. I just sent a copy to my eighty two year old uncle. He was a B-24 pilot in world war two and has been very bitter toward God as a result of a lot of very close friends that he lost. His father was a believer and loved Jesus very much, and would witness to my uncle a lot. This was my grandfather who died of Alzheimer's disease. His terrible dying tour my uncle up, that God would do such a thing to one of His own. I hadn't believed on the Lord until twenty years after his death. Anyway to make a long short my uncle is an agnostic. Every time my wife and I would take the one hundred mile trip over to visit my aunt and uncle, I would always find a way to talk to him about the Lord. He was always very bitter and negative toward anything I had to say about the Bible. This last time we went over was just before Thanksgiving and he was in a nursing home, my aunt has been living by herself for about six months and has not been able to bring him home in that period. I was able to bring him home for the day since I am strong enough to handle him. When I got him home he got big tears in his eyes and said that he never expected to see his home again. When I took him back to the nursing home later that day I told him how much I loved him and I gave him a big hug and a kiss. I didn't mention the Lord or the Bible on this trip at all but right out of a clear blue sky he ask me if I could get him a copy of the New Testament in large print; he said, oh well what do I know anyway! I went out of that place crying and praising the Lord. Needless to say I got him a copy of the Living Bible in giant print. I have been on my knees before the Lord praying that He would reveal the truth of Jesus to him. I sent the Bible by priority mail with a note that said, read the book of John and ask God to show you the truth of his word and I sure hope you believe God's word so you can be in on best family reunion in history. CDBJ P.S. any prayers for him would be highly appreciated; I don't think he has very long to go. |
