1 | Rom 7:9 What's it mean? | Bible general Archive 1 | let it rain | 51559
Rom 7:9 I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died; I'm just a little curious on this one. It seems to challenge the doctrine of "original sin" as I normally hear it taught, which, as generally accepted doctrines go, I think is a little weak anyway. To me, it's not a big big deal, (which is cool) but it makes me wonder if Paul, when he said "all have sinned" didn't intend for us to include the very young, or even perhaps the mentally incompetent. Don't you think you have to understand what "sin" is before you can place faith in a savior? What does it mean to you, Berean, (or anyone else of course)that you were once alive, but then at some later time sin became alive in you and you died? My thinking is that by the time I could feel guilty for doing something wrong or hurtful, I was a sinner. Thanks, Rob |

When Paul wrote that "all have sinned", that does include everyone, because regardless to your state of mind or your age, you are born a sinner because of Adam's transgression (sin). Now I can't intelligently answer how God deals with the mentally imcompetent, but as far as children go, they are not accountable until they understand what sin is. A three year old, for instance, is not held accountable and sent to hell if they die, because they do not have the capacity to understand the difference.

Welcome vikki4god! Wow your first post. Thanks for responding. If you've been flipping thru, you've seen that the overall topic is of a right understanding of baptism. Then a thread began concerning infant baptism. I see baptism as a part of the salvation process (necessary), others see baptism as a work, a response to salvation, and positions such as mine are hopelessly un-faith-only and un-grace-only. I'm pretty new around here too, but the water is warm and the fellow swimmers seem friendly, so jump on in! Let it rain |

Respectfully, I do think that baptismal regeneration does contradict four of the five "alones" that were hallmarks of the Reformation. If we say that we do anything to "seal the deal," then we are not saved by God's grace alone. Even if we call God allowing undeserving sinners to be saved by getting baptized "grace," it isn;t "grace alone." Nor is it "faith alone," as the Church of Christ folks on here have agreed. Faith is required, but it is faith plus something we do (actually many somethings, since they include an undetermined amount of obedience in the mix). Nor are we saved because of Christ alone if we hold to baptismal regeneration. As one poster put it: "God has done all He is going to do; it is up to us to do the rest." Hardly Christ alone! And if we are saved in part by what we do, then the glory does not go to God alone. Having us as the deal makers/breakers in salvation gives us a spot in the limelight as well. I could point out that "Scripture alone" is also questionable, but the length of this thread is already making my computer smoke every time I load it! I do see baptism as necessary, by the way, just not salvific. --Joe! |
