1 | what about the K J V | Rev 3:10 | Hank | 25059
Nolan, on my own behalf, and likely on behalf of many other forum users as well, many thanks for taking the time and thought to give us your rating of the various versions. I'm a trifle put out with myself that I didn't ask you to include The Message and the Cotton-Patch Gospel in your list, but maybe later, huh? :-). In Isaiah 7:14 it's interesting that the ESV translates "virgin", whereas the Revised English Bible and, I believe, the NRSV also, use "young woman." NASB, NKJV and NIV all translate "virgin." Well, thanks again, Nolan, for the informative post. --Hank

Hank, You are most welcome! That is Ok, a little more "effort" on my part would be expected when answering one of your posts, my friend! I do not own a copy of The Message. I was presented with a copy by a friend at a Christmas party, but I've since given it to a travelling missionary.. I just didn't like it at all. As for Cotton-Patch, well, I'll have to include that more often, right along with the Wiley E. Coyote translation with the big ACME sticker on it.. :-) I'm sure that Cotton-Patch has its share of rabbit stories.. If you find any more comparative verses, especially between the NRSV and RSV, then let me know and I'll compare them to the ESV.. If I were to compare the ESV New Testament to the new Holman Christian Standard NT, then I would pick the ESV over the HCSB, even though I like the HCSB as well. For me, its a matter of "style".. The simpler (more accurate, readable) it is, the more I like it. Thats one of the reasons that I like the NASB so much. Here are some verse comparisons between the ESV and HCSB.. Matthew 1:2 "Abraham fathered Isaac, Isaac fathered Jacob, Jacob fathered Judah and his brothers," [HCSB] Matthew 1:2 "Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers," [ESV] Luke 9:44 "Let these words sink in: the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men." [HCSB] Luke 9:44 "Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men." [ESV] John 3:16 "For God loved the world in this way: He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life." [HCSB] John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." [ESV] Colossians 1:19 "Because all the fullness was pleased to dwell in Him," [HCSB] Colossians 1:19 "For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell," [ESV] James 4:17 "So, for the person who knows to do good and doesn't do it, it is a sin." [HCSB] James 4:17 "So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin." [ESV] Your Brother in Christ, Nolan |
