1 | Will unbelievers be raised from Sheol? | Rev 21:8 | EdB | 31944 | ||
Mrs. Santosh S There is no one passage that tells this. But we can piece it together from a few passages. While I run the danger of being accused of proof texting I will take a shot at explaining this. First the word ‘hell’ or ‘sheol’ meant a holding place for the dead to the Jews, it did not mean a place of punishment as we relate it today. Jesus gave us a picture of this place in Luke 16:19-31. Lazarus the beggar died righteous and went to the side called “paradise’ or “Abraham’s bosom” the rich man died and went to the hot dry place. There was no way to cross over. Luke 16:26 Jesus said on the cross to the repentant thief today you will be with me in ‘paradise’ Luke 23:43. Upon His death Jesus went to ‘paradise’ or Abraham’s bosom, however you prefer to call it, and appeared to the righteous awaiting the promised of His arrival. Jesus didn’t remain in Sheol as we see in Hebrews 9:11-14 He ascended into heaven and presented His Blood as the perfect sacrifice on the Altar made without human hands. Jesus lead with Him the residents of Abraham’s bosom taking them home to heaven. Ephesians 4:8. Paradise or Abraham’s bosom is now empty however the hot dry place still has residents awaiting Judgement day. We know this because Jesus sits at the right hand of God and where God is, is heaven. Rom 8:34. Secondly Paul told us to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. 2 Cor. 5:6 so we know we no longer go to sheol to reside in Abraham’s bosom but rather straight to heaven to be with the Lord. Can this be seen as a second chance? No. the people in Abraham’s bosom died in faith looking for the promise (Messiah), the ones in the hot dry place died refusing to acknowledge their need for a relationship with God. Again we simply do not know how God will handle those that have never heard of Jesus but this we can be assured it will be just. I tried to do the subject justice using only a few key verses, understand further evidence of this is spread throughout the Bible. EdB |

Dear EdB: This is essentially a thank you note to you. You have been really kind in informing of all this. I believe it was no accident that I happened to see this site at just the time that I did, so the Lord would use all of you to clarify His Word to me on issues that have boggled me for a long time. I don't know if you can see yet why I am concerned for the unreached. You see, I come from a Hindu background and as such have a whole load of relatives (grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.) that died even before the Lord ever revealed Himself to me. That happened a little more than seven years ago, and I am still the only one saved in my household. I am sure that many of the relatives who I'm concerned about never heard the gospel. Rom 2:12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; Rom 2:13 (For not the hearers of the law [are] just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. Rom 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Rom 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and [their] thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) The above, as I understand, is a reference to people who lived without knowing the Lord. This says that they will be judged on the basis of the way they lived their lives, I hope. Do want to be sure that I will indeed meet them someday and that they are not eternally lost. |
