Greetings Fritzeverett! I believe that passage you are thinking of is Mark 2:1-12. Note however, that 'Get up, and take your bed' was said to the man to demonstrate that He also had authority to say 'Your sins are forgiven'. The issue with 1 Peter 2:24 is not whether or not God heals. Most Christians would agree that God does indeed heal and that He does indeed hear our prayers. The issue is whether or not 'physical healing' is a part of the atonement in the same way that forgiveness of sins is part of the atonement. If it is, then no Christian should ever get sick, regardless of how much faith he does or does not have. Our atonement is an accomplished fact of history. Forgiveness of sins is guaranteed to those who call on the Lord. We are not forgiven one day and then unforgiven the next. In the same way, if physical healing were part of the atonement, then Christians would never get sick, period! But, Scripture does not teach that physical healing is part of the atonement. It does teach that God will heal in response to our prayers, if it is in accordance with His will. I have prayed for people and seen marvelous, unbelievable acts of instananeous healing. I have also prayed for people and it was God's will that they not be healed. One of the most dramatic involved a man in our church. To make a long story shorter, he had suffered a major stroke and was not expected to live. But, he kept hanging on to life. Everyday, the family and I met and prayed that God would heal him. However, he wasn't healed. Finally, after almost three straight weeks of this, I felt moved to pray that God would take this precious brother home. The family was getting ready to leave for the night, and his wife came over to me and asked me to pray that God would take her husband home (exactly as I had felt moved to do). I prayed, "Lord, we know that Brother ______ loves you and we ask right now that if it is your will to take him home to be with you, do so!" At exactly that moment, my friend quit breathing! For now, we sometimes must 'groan' along with creation because of the effects of sin and in anticipation of what God is going to do when we are transformed and glorified. To me, real faith is the faith which says to God, "Use me as You see fit!" Not a faith which says, "Here is what I want God, do it now!" Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Thank you Monran 61 for being candid and on the mark about my question on healing. Truly that is the type of response that I was looking for, in fact it has caused me to rethink and ponder more as I research the scriptures. Yes, you are correct in stating that it was Mark 2:1-12. Thank You. I appreciate the shrapening, let me state that in Revelations 22:1-3 it says that the leaves will be for the healing of the Nation. This is during a time when Jesus will rein supreme. Now if we needed healing then surely we would need healing now--that's posed more as a question. Let me explain, I do believe that all things are possible in God to those who believe. It's not much as a faith thing that I'm questioning. It's the holding to a documented fact that the atonement covers or does not cover physical healing. If a person sin during the his walk in Christ he should repent and except the forgiveness of God 1 John1:9. I recognize that he died once and for all but just like we have to receive forgiveness, we also have to receive healing (physical). I know that Paul did not receive a healing because Gods grace was sufficient. Corinthians 12:9. The very question that Paul ask is evidence that God heals. But the atonement question still has not been answered. I know that Christ does not have to die again however, just like repenting of an ungodly act we should also seek healing if our body fail us. That healing should be available because of the work on the cross. What do you think fellow brother and pastor in the Lord? This is really good stuff I'm so excited about God I think as men of God and as the day is older we must stay girded up in the word and not be tired of good study and strong Godly debate. Thank You for your words of wisdom and knowledge they have stirred me up more to study. So I will know Gods will. Fritzeverett. Oh, I'm from Colorado and I'm 41 years young with 4 children. Hello Fritzeverett, Hello..i would like to comment on your statement if I may. "I know that Paul did not receive a healing because Gods grace was sufficient. Corinthians 12:9." Please read, if you have not already, my post #81017. 2 Corinthians is often used to confirm sickness as God's will and instrument of discipline. However, if you re read 2 Corinthians carefully researching the word "suffering' and giving no consideration to the traditional teaching, you may find this is not the case. I do suggest reading the entire book. when I did this study, I opened my Bible and asked the Holy Spirit to help me read it as if for the first time blocking any presuppositions and previous commentaries I had read. As I read I was careful not to interject any words or beliefs and to take the scriptures purely based on what they actually say. I suggest you try that as well. The reason you should reconsider this conclusion is because if you accept this common interpretation of 2 Corinthians (the entire book) your understanding of other scripture in regards to healing will be influenced by this. For instance, you say you are still considering the issue of healing being provided through the atonement. If Corinthians tells us Paul was suffering a physical sickness or desease given him by God, or Satan and allowed by God then the issue of healing and the atonement is already concluded, healing is conditional and not provided for everyone because we have a Biblical exception. Please consider two points. Does scripture tell us what the thorn was? Does scripture tell us why God did not remove it? I would be interested to hear your comments after you read the thread. God bless |
