1 | CAN YOU REMARRY THE SAME SPOUSE | Deut 24:4 | Hank | 42962
Kalos, for virtually all my life thus far I've been exposed to the promulgation of the idea that the New Covenant did away with the Old. I've even heard it proclaimed from the pulpit that Jesus 'did away with the Law, nailing it to the Cross.' How this sort of doctrine could be derived from Jesus' own words I shall never know, for what can be clearer than the Saviour's words of Matthew 5:17: "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill." To assert that nothing in the Old Testament applies to Christians not only serves to make Jesus Christ out as a liar, but it is also tantamount to admission that God changed His mind about the Ten Commandments, along with a host of other things. --Hank

I agree with srbaegon. I too live under grace. Jesus fulfilled the law so that we would no longer have to live under it's burdensome weight. If we are still bound by the Old Testament Law then why did Jesus die? And yes, all scripture is profitable for training in righteousness as the Word says. But does that mean I must live by all the laws God gave before Jesus died? If so then I have failed miserably as I eat pork and shellfish, etc. But this is not the case. Jesus died to set us free and in that freedom I choose to live.

"So that we would no longer have to live under [the Law's] burdensome weight"? "Burdensome weight"? NASB 1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. AMPLIFIED 1 John 5:3 For the [true] love of God is this: that we do His commands [keep His ordinances and are mindful of His precepts and teaching]. And these orders of His are not irksome (burdensome, oppressive, or grievous). Psalm 19:7-9 (ESV) [7] The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; [8] the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; [9] the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. |

I do not disagree with the Scriptures that you have referenced. The burdensome Law I referred to is the same that Jesus spoke of regarding the Pharisees who self-righteously kept the law, but had no room for mercy or justice and therefore heaped burdens on others. I know I can't keep the Law as outlined in the Old Testament. Do you keep the Law? And where does grace come in if we are to keep the Law? And if Jesus fulfilled the Law as He said, then what is left for us to fulfill?
