Pete, Your question pertained to the CONTEXT of Matthew's recording of Christ's words in Mt.5 which was clarified in Mt.19. AGAIN, in that context Christ elucidated that adultery is the only cause of the effect as we compared. The CONTEXT dealt with the Pharisees abuse of Scripture to marry who they wanted and divorce when the wanted. Now if you want to deal with "Violence" in marriage. That's another topic. Do you want to start another topic on domestic violence and whether it violates the marraige covenant? Peace to you, Ovadyah |

Dear Ovadyah, Sidney proclaimed that there was absolutely no other reason whatsoever for allowing a divorce except for sexual immorality. You see, I don't believe there's anyone who agrees with that. There are many legitimate reasons people divorce. Domestic violence, forced marriages, incarceration and much of what we see in our churches today, when one partner becomes saved and the other bolts. In Matt 5:32, Jesus was on the mountain speaking to his disciples when he declared that except for sexual immorality, divorcees who remarry commit adultery. In Matt 19:9, Jesus repeats basically the same teaching to the Pharisees as what he said to his disciples. How don't see any change in meanings to support your "CONTEXT" argument. Peace to you, Pete |

Pete, Yes and once again in the context of Mt.5:32 and Mt.19:9. So once again..... do you want to go specifically into whether divorce is warranted by domestic violence? AS you've stated the obvious. It does warrant divorce. If we leave the context of Matthew narratives we will find them. I couldn't understand why in your first post you went on the offense about others claiming how you wonder off context BUT NOW I UNDERSTAND. Your responses and reasonings are non-sequitor. In your first blog you didn't say anything about violence. You were confused about Mt.5:32 which Mt.19:9 clarified. If the CONTEXT dealt with the Pharisees abusing their wives, Christ answer would have been different but the context was the Pharisees divorcing and remarrying for ANY reason. Again, if the context was about ABUSE then Christ answer would have been different in Mt.19. But it's not, that's found in other verses outside of the context Matthew recorded. Can you find a context where Scripture permits divorce from domestic violence? I'm sure you can. But it won't be in the context of Matthew 5:32 or Mt. 19. Again now it's clear to me why you had to go on the offense about your research being non-sequitor. Peace to you, Ovadyah(sidney) |

Dear Sidney, I am trying to answer everyone's helpful posts, but I am falling behind. I believe you and I are engaged in what Hank and Brad coined, "circular banter." I'll just say one more time then I'll quit. As I have read Matt 5:32 and 19:9, the meaning I get is that Jesus proclaims that there is no other reason for divorce other than sexuality immorality. Anyone who divorces and remarries for any other reason, commits adultery. Why wouldn't Jesus include in the exemptions list along with sexual immorality, domestic violence, forced marriages, incarceration, and couples unequally yoked where one of them leaves? Are you saying these texts apply only to the Pharisees and without any other possibilities, the only legitimate reason for getting a divorce was sexuality immorality and nothing else? Okay, brother Sidney, you have the last word. Thank you so very much for all your help. Pete |

because he was dealing specifically with their divorcing out of lust not domestic violence. Their are other contexts where people were dealt with by treating their wives with abuse. Context, Context, Context... As a former Police Officer I would school kids that the drugs they were using could get them arrested. However, that's not the only thing that could get them arrested. I dealt with the problem at hand(context) which was drug abuse. However we know if "illegal guns" were a problem I would inform them. Illegal guns would get you arrest. They should be confused and respond, "Wait a minute Officer, You only stated that the drugs were using would get us arrested, we're confused". LOL, Sidney |
