1 | Hebrews 6:4 | Heb 6:4 | Morant61 | 14612
Greetings CDBJ! Your explanation of the conditional clauses was excellent. However, there is one small problem. There is no conditional conjunction in Heb. 6:4-6. So, the different types of conditional clauses don't apply to this passage. Rather, Heb. 6:4-6 lists five aorist participles which describe the condition of those being discussed. They have: 1) ...been enlighted - v. 4. 2) ...tasted the heavenly gift - v. 4. 3) ...shared in the Holy Spirit - v. 4. 4) ...tasted the goodness of the Word and the powers of the coming age - v. 5. 5) ....fallen away - v. 6. I don't know why some translations put an "if" here, since it simply is not in the Greek. The phrase "bring them back to repentance" refers to all five of these statements, not just the "fallen away." This doesn't mean that your interpretation is necessarily wrong. This is a very difficult passage and there are four ways of looking at it. 1) That is is describing the danger of "losing" one's salvation. 2) That is is describing individuals who have never really accepted Christ, but merely made a profession and then turned away. 3) That it is a hypothetical statement which describes a situation that cannot happen. 4) That "fallen away" refers to becoming disqualified for service, not "losing" one's salvation. 2 | Hebrews 6:4 | Heb 6:4 | Ray | 14639
Hi Tim, I think that the "if God permits" of Heb 6:3 would be in the 3rd class as far as CDBJ's explanation is concerned. Maybe we'll go on to maturity and maybe we won't. Maybe He has already chosen us or maybe He hasn't. We don't know what decision He has made, but the bottom line is that it is up to us to be good ground that drinks in all the information that falls our way and so we can bring forth some fruit or vegetation that is useful. Certainly the writer of Hebrews was "convinced of better things" in verse 9; that these people who had heard the word would not forget their work and be diligent to the end. I was interested in your capitalization of the "Word" in Heb 6:5. I believe that the Word can be tasted for I believe that Jesus is the Bread of life. But I wonder if the Greek would suggest this to you. I rather see the tasting of the heavenly gift, and the holy spirit, and the word of God. Later, Ray I was interested in your capitalization of "Word" in |

3 | Hebrews 6:4 | Heb 6:4 | Morant61 | 14643
Greetings Ray! I would concur that Heb. 6:3 would be a 3rd class conditional statement. But, that pharse would refer back to Heb. 6:1-3, not forward to Heb. 6:4-6. Out of the four options I listed for interpreting Heb. 6:4-6, I would personally hold to option 1. I believe that Paul is writting to Jewish Christians who are on the verge of abandoning Christ. Hence, Paul warns them that to do so would result in their falling away. If one rejects Christ, what hope of salvation is left? Concerning the capitalization, I usually try to capitalize any mention of the Bible, Scripture, or the Word. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
